Nintendo News | Wii Headset, WaveRace in 2008, Free Radical Support, Metroid Dread & More?

By Adam Riley 25.08.2007 24

The latest edition of the IGN podcast feature 'Wii-k in Review' has now gone live and below are some of the key highlights from what was quite a quiet show in terms of news compared to previous editions. Thanks to demure for the summary:

  • Matt thinks Free Radical will support Wii and believes many developers will switch from PS3 to Wii;
  • IGN does not know what is going on with Battalion Wars II or Disaster for Wii. Matt was almost positive BWii would be at the Games Convention in Leipzig;
  • The team wonder why there has been no headset revealed for BWii and believe one is in the works;
  • Talk of a a God-game coming to Wii pop up again and details on this, and several other unmentioned games, might be coming soon;
  • Will we see F-Zero on Wii in 2008? The team reckon 'no way'. As for Wave Race, though, that is definitely a 'maybe';
  • They speculate over whether or not developers will be able to out-do the sublime Metroid Prime 3 controls, coming to the conclusion of 'yes, eventually'. They also think Free Radical would be a 'good candidate' to do this;
  • Hopefully the developer of 'that' God-game will be announced soon;
  • Surprisingly the much-vaunted Metroid Dread (2D Nintendo DS project that has been AWOL since 2005) gets a mention, with them stating there is nothing they 'can talk about...YET.' They then state something cool will be shown on Monday night and Bozon says it is 'kind of a wink to the fans.' It is stressed that this is definitely not a confirmation that the game is coming, just something cool;
  • Factor 5 is bringing its GameCube middleware tools over to the Wii and Crytek is busy at work on the system;
  • Also, IGN is getting a lot of calls from Publishers to play games. There is a lot of Wii activity right now.
Stay tuned for further updates...

I hope some of this comes into fruition. Matt can be a bit of a barsteward sometimes with his announcements and stuff. Smilie

Factor 5, Free Radical, WaveRace returning AND Metroid Dread? Smilie My dreams coming true, if that's to be believed! Smilie

I really need a new 2D Metroid fix...

Hmm, god game...
Black and White anyone?

Wasn't there a DS version of it? Did that get canned or something?

Lionhead was bought by Microsoft, that's what happened Smilie Doesn't mean the DS game won't ever re-appear, though. No Wii B&W, however.

Perhaps EA is resurrecting Populous.

Populous? Is that a Will Wright game? Seems to ring a bell...

Buggers.

God games. MY FAVOURITE. Really hope this is a good 'un.

The title is very misleading, can you have the heading as "Nintendo Speculation" instead?

Anyway, IGN think a lot of things.

Agreed. I got my hopes up when I came in and saw the big "MAYBE" sticker slapped on Wave Race.

Please, let this be gospel.

I would be amazed if anything happened at all. They make claims like this all the time and nothing ever seems to come of it...

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

I dont agree with that view at all, I would say FZero is more likely than WaveRace is for sure.{LS}

Great to see Free Radical support.

F Zero GX "2" please.

Does any of this stuff ever turn out to be true?

Populous, by the way, was the only original idea Peter Molyneux ever had. It got published on 1989 and was made by Bullfrog - Molyneux company. They made the fantastic 'Flood' after that on Amiga, but then this overhyped so called 'designer' only was busy creating hype after hype with bubble and vaporware after emtpy bubble (Black And White, Fable, Powermonger, Populous 2, and so on. basically God Game after God Game...)

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

F-Zero Wii should be good.

I hope Wii Wave Race is better than the Gamecube version - that was really crappy - light weight and shallow.

Common sense, nothing to see here.

Metroid Dread. Smilie

My DS will cry tears of joy if that ever gets announced. (and so will I.)

If there is a Headset in development I'm wondering how it would be powered batteries or a charger also would they use a bluetooth with USB funtionSmilie

MAYBE?!?!

I would feel sick if they don't make a WaveRace, I mean the game's cool!...but I wouldn't buy it...

Now I say: Maybe. The headset would be great, I can only think "online play" Smilie. I don't know, a charger can be useful, I don't like batteries...

I don't know what the hell a Bwii is, but they really need to make a headset for the wii, I don't wanna play online games without them, it just seems like your facing a smart computer then. don't you all agree?

BWii = Batallion Wars 2

& yeah, I think Nintendo should make the Wii voice chat enabled, even if they ever "consider" trying to make their online service as good as Live. It's on it way, surely, I mean, even the DS has voice chat (although limited) in some games.

Well that is awesome, sadly I don't think it will make it into brawl

Online for Brawl is unlikely if you ask me... & voice chat sounds even more so. Smilie

Yea I know that the voice chat seems really really unlikely, but the online not so much, nintendo really should look at this game as a failure if it doesn't have online, because this game is the biggest multiplayer game nintendo has.If theyy ever hope to do combat with xbox live, brawl is their first step.
