Industry News | Ubisoft Using Nintendo DS/Wii to Fund PS3/Xbox 360 Games

By Adam Riley 27.08.2007 31

Nintendo has been seeing a lot of support from Ubisoft since the release of the innovative Wii console, with DS support also ramping up as of late. However, it seems that the French company is seemingly just after making a quick buck.

Speaking to Reuters at the Games Convention in Leipzig last week, the company's CEO Yves Guillemot has revealed that its casual line-up for the Wii and DS is an "extremely profitable" business. What will come as a bit of a blow to Nintendo gamers, though, is that rather than pumping some of this profit into grand-scale Wii projects, the money made is being used to finance the expensive development costs of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 projects!

Yay, the Wii gets the shiz.

Makes sense from their perspective, though I would like it if they made some good games on the Wii instead of the mainstream crap.

Well, that just plain sucksSmilie

Stop supporting Ubisoft I say - oh wait, I don't buy there crap casual games anyway:cooldude:

That is the most disloyal thing they could do. They should reward the success of their company on the platforms that made it profitable.

Temporarily banned until further notice.

Really?SmilieSmilie

Not surprised me really when you look at the majority of their Wii/DS games compared to their PS3/360 lineup.

Eventually they'll realise that they can't get away with putting crap on the Wii.

Players will no doubt say "oh wait, we already have a similar game" and not shell out

Only if they don't think 'grand scale' Wii games will be similarly profitable.

I'd like to see the context of this. Do they mean "we're using this money to fund our current 360/PS3 projects" or "we'll continue to use Wii shovelware to fund future 360/PS3 projects"?

There's a big difference. The former suggests that the requirements for 360/PS3 games are a huge drain on company finances and it's just as well Ubi have another profit stream to turn to. The latter suggests that Ubi don't see a market for traditional grand scale games on Wii.

I really do not think that it matters. Ubisoft's casual titles will not sell very well on the Wii or the DS. Think about it. A hard core company trying to make casual games other than Rayman 2. This is not Ubisoft's core business nor is it an emphasis. Instead it's an afterthought designed to make money. This is the main reason why it will fail.

Nintendo, on the other hand, is emphasizing casual games. This is why they developed; Brian age, Brain age 2, Nintendogs, and Wii sports.

Where's the news? We all knew this way back. It's only natural, developers feel that the wii won't last the years the Ps3 "probably" will.

I think its a "get-rich quick" scheme that will serve them well at first, but ultimately fail. But really, while this isn't surprising, it is still very disappointing. Ubisoft isn't getting any of my money...

Thats a bitch move Ubisoft, never felt closer to you. Man, thats a low move to pull, kinda wondered about those shit-games they'd been doing, though I'd never much cared for many of their games anyways...

Proud United State-ian

He's not dead, he's electroencephalographically challenged.

<_< i really hate Ubisoft somthing really worng with them take profit and not puting it back in what ass holes really they are

good grief.

Why are they so idiotic.

Sure, you can make money on casual games.
But why not invest and sale other games too?

Gamecube owners bought a very respectfull amount of Beyond good and Evil and Prince of Persia games.

They are a business, after all.

Wingers who bought the wrong console aside, this is good news. The shit games are the means to the good games, allowing games to continue to evolve whilst staying commercially viable. The hard truth is that this is exactly what should be happening.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

they are a business so wh the hell take profit from wii game to make ps3/360 that dont make any profit <_< maybe if they made some real wii game and not port and mines

Smilie well that makes a lot of sense! Those total ass fuckers! Smilie Boycott Ubizhite!!

I am so unbelievably peeved at them now. I don't think I'll ever respect them as a company ever again. Or ONM. ONM still seem to love them. I guess ONM luvz the animalz.

It's not a case of leaching profit from other products, it's getting the money in hand so that you can invest in more expensive stuff. It's not because the next gen games won't be profitable, it's because they need a lot of investment to get off the ground and pay the wages before the thing goes on sale and money starts coming in.

well that makes a lot of sense!

It makes 100% crystal clear sense.

I don't know whether to believe this or not. But if it's true... Smilie

No question. Really. There isn't.

If you ask me it's been obvious since Wii day #1.

Anyway. I suggest a mass Ubisoft killing/massacre/REDSTEEL YAKUZALOL/thing.

Ubisoft are crap anyway, I look foward to yet more comedy from Redsteel 2. If this is true and people are unhappy about it simply dont by their crap games.{LS]

Unsurprising, but disappointing nonetheless. I have lost a lot of respect towards Ubisoft because of this.

Well, one phrase immediately comes to mind... "WHAT THE F***?!!"

Chance favors the prepared mind.

If this is really true, than this is real ckicken sh*t and I'm gravely disappointed in Ubisoft.

I guess Wii won't be getting a quality sequel to Red Steel.

Sooooooo disappointed.

Chance favors the prepared mind.

Red Steel wasn't quality either, what were you expecting?

It's very common for businesses to have cash cow product lines that pay for possible financial sinkholes. Look no further than Microsoft using their Windows and Office profits to pay for the Xbox (and now the 360.) It's just good business. You take your income from where you can get it and use it to finance bigger projects that you expect to get a still bigger return on.

I think the real point here is that Wii and DS products are in fact a cash cow, an "extremely profitable" cash cow, for them. If they keep releasing short, shallow games like the first Rabbids game, or clumsy ports like Rayman DS, or lousy games like Far Cry Vengeance, people will stop buying them and their cash cow will be, you know, cash hamburger.

And by the same token, if they keep making a killing on Wii games and don't make a proportionally large killing on their Wii-subsidized 360 and PS3 titles, then it'll be the 360 and the PS3 that get the slapped-together stuff and the Wii that gets the bulk of their development budget.

We're just now seeing the results of their planning from before the Wii's release. It'll be at least a year or two before any of the above comes to fruition.
