The latest report to filter in from the UK is that Nintendo's Wii has now surpassed the landmark of one million sales...but not only that, it has done it in record time by hitting the mark in just 38 weeks on sale!
This means that the previous record holder, the PlayStation 2, has now been beaten as it took Sony's system 50 weeks to reach the same sales mark. For reference, the Xbox 360 hit a million after 60 weeks. Chart Track has also confirmed that Wii now has a 68% share of the home console market here in the UK, whilst the Nintendo DS holds a whopping 86% of the handheld side.
"The non-stop demand for Wii even in the traditionally slow sales periods for videogames in the UK is clearly behind this record breaking achievement. The performance of both systems appears to indicate that unprecedented interactive entertainment experiences, provided by a combination of the revolutionary nature of DS and Wii with the increasing number of unique software titles for the system from Nintendo and third parties, are being enjoyed by both avid and new gamers of all ages. [ Wii & DS ] will continue to be the main driving forces" behind the expansion of the games market in the coming months."
