Nintendo News | 16 Player Online Mode for Mario Kart Wii

By Jorge Ba-oh 06.09.2007 25

Update: NOM does it again. Mario Kart speculation? Head on in for an update...

According to a statement courtesy to CVG, apparently the report in the official Nintendo magazine wasn't really... official at all.

"The details printed in Official Nintendo Magazine 21 regarding Mario Kart Wii were healthy speculation on our part and are in no way an official announcement from Nintendo. We are sorry if we have mislead anyone. We do not set out to mislead our readers. ONM apologises profusely for any misunderstandings that this has caused."

Here we go...again.

Original Report: A snippet in the recent UK Nintendo Official Magazine reconfirms the upcoming Mario Kart for Wii to have online battle features, adding the ability to have 16 players go head-to-head simultaneously. The report also reveals the ability to perform mid-air tricks for those itching to show off their karting skills whilst vying for first place.

Thanks to Jump_Button for the tip.

I know that the 16 player online was revealed at E3, but tricks were shown in the footage snippet too. So I guess it's all just reconfirmation.

16? That's great. I wonder if this will only be online.

Blimey, yet another cock-up. An official magazine reporting something...that hasn't been confirmed? Who'd have thunk it?

Quite why anyone buys official magazines is beyond me.

Smilie i love it when ppl have to say sorry what part are they saying sorry about?

About the 16 player thing - they said it was speculation on their part, even though the article doesn't mention anything of the sort.

Cubed3 Admin/Founder & Designer

What a shame. I still expect at least 8 player online support.

say it clear as day Smilie

Geeeez... really unprofessional.

I'm so glad I stopped buying magazines. I used to buy NOM all the time when I was a kid, but as I grew up, I realised how "kiddy" the mag was. Sure, they gotta cater for young players too, but the free gifts like keyrings and the constant Pokemon stuff started to become annoying.

When GameCube came out, I turned to CUBE magazine which was miles better. The writers knew their stuff, were funny, and didn't make the mag designed for a 5 year old.

I know NOM has the "official" license, but I really don't think it means anything whatsoever. They've provided false info as "fact" before, but if they were official, they wouldn't post anything of the sort. The official thing is just a word.

But heck, since I finally got a computer, I don't need mags anymore. Long live the internet =)

CUBE mag fucked rocked, best mag ever, the chief editor Miles Glutter (I think?) was a legend.

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

What? But at E3, they mentioned all those things, didn't they? 16 player, tricks, AND online battle mode... how is that a cock up? Or did I remember it wrong.

They mentioned all expect how many players so where ONM got 16 players from I don't know.

I really do dislike ONM, it's full of wish washy crap and no subtance.{LS]

I dislike ONM too, if they were still NOM I'd probably still be collecting them. ONM just bored me. They tried to be mature but they were the most blatent Nintendo fanboys I'd ever seen. Their review of Red Steel is proof.

NOM were funny, & fun to read, they also had really interesting covers, a bigger letter section, art section, & didn't brag on about their website for half of the mag.

As for the amount of players on MKWii, well, I'm sure someone at E3 said it would have something like 12 players?

E3 didnt mention *anything*.
They just demoed some tracks FROM the DS version, they didnt confirm they will all be there.

Why do people like dropping 16ton weights on people? Or Cows on a superheroic Earthworm? Noone knows why. But it works. Very well.

Yeah but... Tricks in Karts... Would not work well...

Besides, since it's NTOM they're no doubt pulling it out of their arse. They lie an unbelievable amount in every issue. Their 'Huge feature' on Battalion Wars 2 was one page (Taken up mainly by two relatively old images) with them saying how awesome it is, but without actually telling you anything new about it... Not much old about it either actually >_>

Yeah, I cringe at the thought of tricks being incorporated into Mario Kart.

I guess I'm a Mario Kart purist, if there's such a thing. Smilie

It's not, it was in a trailer god dammit! >.<

Does anyone here even remember E3?! I swear I remember them talking about 12-16 player online too! Or did I dream E3 o.o

Nah, it was too crap to be a dream. The only dreams I ever remember are awesome ones.

EDIT: Well, if tricks are essential to winning, then Mario Kart is automatically ruined. If it's optional then what the hell.

STUNT GP FUDA MUCKER.

>_>;

ONM suck eggs, which is the opposite of Birdo, but they're just as bad as Birdo.

That means you can only be OK if you don't suck eggs or blow eggs. Apparantly.

Except they weren't karts... And it wasn't Mario Kart... It was a completely new game, made for stunts. Hence the name. Mario Kart will be ruined though, especially if it's like the awful tricks in Excite Truck ;-;

That isn't true. The feature took up 10 pages and was set to be a full world exclusive reveal of the game but Nintendo decided at the last minute to show it at LGC or wherever it was a week earlier making ONM's big surprise wasted.

Their was a lot of exclusive info in the mag though. It revealed that the Wii control setup at LGC isn't the final one and some of the multiplayer modes and had interviews with several of the development team. There were also loads of screenshots that had not been seen before and generally just loads more impressions and info.

ONM is a good magazine and bar a few stupid choices, (wii stand acting as power supply, bragging about NiGHTS exclusive only to give it away to another mag and now this 16 player thing) is much better than the childish, fanyboyish NOM.
