Nintendo News | Retro Talks Metroid Prime, Wii Power

By Jorge Ba-oh 21.09.2007 14

Retro recently discussed their post-Prime 3 results, the graphical power of the Wii, expectations for the title and the future with Nintendo and Metroid.

"The Wii is a fairly decently powerful game system as far as polygons go. We don't have a lot of depth with shader stuff, but we can make really good color palettes...
...you can definitely do more stuff that will be way beyond that."
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption art director Todd Keller

"One of the things we've always been told by Nintendo of Japan is they say they appreciate us as a studio because we make games they can't make. Their specialty is in the casual market.

Their specialty is in the platforming and more traditional games. I'm really excited about what we're working on next. If people enjoy the kinds of games Retro makes, I don't think they're going to be disappointed about what we're doing."
Mark Pacini, Game's Director

Interesting.
Id hardly call Mario Galaxy & Zelda:TP "casual" however.
Ditto for Fire Emblems or such.

Nintendo certainly has a weakness as regards to FPS (or well, FP perspective in general).
Thats kinda the gap Retro fills.

I think Nintendo of Japan may have just changed their aims... thank god there are some companies out there like Retro, they're honest & they make great games. I wish more 2nd/3rd parties were like that.

Well at least we know it's not going to be a casual game thank god.

-_- oh come on dont say

"I don't think they're going to be disappointed about what we're doing."

and not give us some idea what they working on lol that just evil to us

"I think Nintendo of Japan may have just changed their aims..."

When will these rumours die >_<

We have got Zelda, Mario and Metroid faster on this console then others, with superb results.

Just because WiiSports and BrainTraining is a hit, dosnt mean it will suddenly suck up Nintendos resources making sequals. (in fact, quite the reverse...)

I hope the next game they make has online multiplayer Smilie

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

I second that. They should release a Metroid Online game at budget price.

I completely disagree, when will people learn that a multiplayer Metroid is worse than a multiplayer Zelda? Metroid & multiplayer don't go together. The MP2E multiplayer was lame, & MPH was lame as a whole.

Can't Nintendo just make a new IP rather than milking Metroid? It's not hard. Plus it could be 1,000,000 times better than Metroid online could ever be. Mainly because Metroid isn't meant to be a multiplayer.

EDIT: For me, multiplayer has ruined the Metroid series. Metroid Prime Hunters was so spin-offy I thought it would end up as Nintendo's new Mario series. It's why I'm looking forward to MP3. No last minute multiplayer for the sake of multiplayer.

I agree, Metriod is made on the atmosphere of being alone, a solitary bounty hunter in a strage world...

I couldn't disagree more. Firstly let's take Hunters out of the equation, it was extremely medicore, it wasn't Metroid game and it wasn't a Retro developed title, therefore it isn't revelant as far as i am concerned. Secondly i agree with the emphasis mainly being on a fantastic single player adeventure mode, Metroid Prime remains probably my favourite title ever to this day. Thridly MP2 Echoes multiplayer didn't suck it rocked, if you have 3 mates who are all fucking class at Metroid ,it gives for some really intense multiplayer action. The lay out of Metroid titles with all Samus utility (morph ball, various beams, power bombs, scanning) made the multiplayer unique. I can't see why after Corruption is finshed why Retro can't just take that winning MP3 formula and jsut create multiplayer maps and some extra guns etc. That is a job that requires little time and resources, so it wouldn't getting in the way of retro reinventing an old IP, or creating a new IP.

Metroid Prime 2 Echoes multiplayer was nothing more than a wannabe of a much better multiplayer shooter, using re-colours.

New IP? Anyone? For fuck's sake, people complain so much when Nintendo don't make any new IPs, & then people say "Why not just put that in a Zelda game or Metroid game?"

Nintendo relies on 3 IPs. 3. It needs more IPs, a franchise based on multiplayer shooshting sounds like a good place to start huh?

EDIT: Creating a new IP is a far better idea than putting 1+1 together & getting 5.

Metroid is a solo experience. It was always meant to be. That became obvious when all that could be thought of for Metroid multiplayer ideas were recolour robots & badly designed filler/spin off hunter characters.

0_0! Were you high or...drunk when you played it?

Id hardly call Mario Galaxy & Zelda:TP "casual" however.

Of course Mario is a game for casual gamers just as much as it is for hardcore. Just because it'll be good does mean it's a game for hardcore gamers.

"One of the things we've always been told by Nintendo of Japan is they say they appreciate us as a studio because we make games they can't make. Their specialty is in the casual market.

Good, so it looks like Retro will be making the hardcore gamers! This is good news.

Why make a spin-off? Wouldn't you rather they just release a NEW online game?

Good news, these guys have yet to fail me. I certainly hope they are working on a new IP, they deserve to have their own.
