Nintendo News | DS Banned from Flights

Whilst the Nintendo DS may be the most popular portable console around the world, it has been deemed as a danger to aeroplanes due to its Wi-Fi capabilities affecting in-flight equipment. Therefore, Japanese airlines have now banned the use of both the DS and PSP, as well as any other device capable of wireless transmission, such as wireless mice.

The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has stated that such pieces of hardware emit electromagnetic waves that could potentially interfere with aircraft navigation and other systems.

Japanese airlines only? Phew... so many people would be bored... Smilie. Sucks to be them I guess, still, all it takes is a little common sense, just plain & simple don't use WiFi while playing your DS or PSP on a plane, you know if your DS is connected to WiFi because the green/red power light flashes.

Still, GBA still has a lot of juice Smilie wouldn't b e a huge worry really. People working with laptops could be a problem though. Not sure if special business airliners still let people use their laptops though.

It may seem unfair, but it's a good idea. WiFi could scramble Plane stuff if someone used it... it's probably unlikely but precautions should be taken, y'know?

And what about Laptops?

Or are we too scared to piss of the high paying buisness-class eh?

oh, and the worst airlines are by far Air Italia

They dont allow any device with a dvd or cd drives. (for some reason they think lazers can mess up the aircraft).
Also, they dont give you headphones, but little rubber tubes to stick towards a speaker. (Seriously!)

oh, and on a more serious side;

Why cant they just get this whole mess sorted?

We live in an age of science and reason. It shouldnt be that much effort to build aircraft that arnt effected by small wireless transmisions.

Set up a battary of tests with, like 100times the expected strength, and if it pass's that you know they are safe.

Makes sense to me.

DSs are essential inflight entertainment, second only to Mile High Club shenanigans. Good thing it's just the Japanese airlines.

I want to be serious for a second and wonder if wi-fi was a detriment to air travel then why haven't terrorists attempted to use it to take down planes. Seems like it would be a lot easier than trying to smuggle weapons on board.

And how would you prevent a terrorist from turning his wi-fi Blackberry on and off in his pocket during a flight?

It just seems odd. I wonder what 'navigation and other systems' might potentially be affected and how.

Look unto me in every thought. Doubt not. Fear not.

I've always been under the impression that those stupid rules on wireless were more of a super-extra-special-not-really-necessary precaution than anything else. Poor Japanese flight owners. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the headline, thankfully its only the Japanese folks.

What about GBAs? Where's all the GBA love? It was defo one of the greatest consoles of all time... & many DS games still don't come close to GBA quality...

LOL me too. I would so start a fight with the person trying to take it off me.

I would be submissive, I couldn't win a fight against a fish.

Unless it was Super Smash Bros. I'd prolly win that.

I know someone with a GBA collection like that ^^

He intends to get every Megaman game on GBA. I wonder if he did that yet? o.0;

I think on emirates are soon going to allow all those things along with mobile phones to be used on the plane. I think they've sorted some way to stop it interfering. Don't quote me however, I vaguely remember seeing this reported on TV.

Bummer, was going to get a DS for my flight to the Czech Republic next august. Guess i'll get a GBA instead!

Seems a bit dramatic to me but ah well. It doesn't really affect me anymore. I'd much rather sleep it out.

To compensate they should fit screens in the back of every seat and setup a big Xbox 360 LAN network running PES. Smilie

I didn't play my DS much on the plane to/from Spain either. Too worried about sicknss, & I'd rather try to get to sleep for 3 hours. I never actually get to sleep though >.<

I played My DS on a flight back from India, (Sri Lankan airlines) It worked fine...
I even tried to connect with my sister to battle.
And she was at the front of the plane.
It worked perfect.
And (no offense) most SriLankans don't really care...
Why the dude sitting next to me was basically hogging it.

i think it's pretty silly if people try to use the wifi capabilities of the DS on a plane though. you can play the DS without using the wifi...

Yeah, I think if you're on a plane, you shouldn't use WiFi. Your DS will probably work fine but you have to take into consideration the WiFi interfearing with various plane systems. It should really be common courtesy.
