Nintendo Wii Media | Smash Update: Shielding & Dodging

By Jorge Ba-oh 04.10.2007 11

The second update on the Official Smash Bros. Brawl website today reintroduces an essential tip for fighting fans: shielding and dodging.

Once you know how to attack, the next thing you have to think about is avoiding enemy attacks. That's where the shield button comes in handy.

You guard against your enemy's attack with your shield!! Shielding against attacks is a top priority. Because if you don't get attacked, you can't get done in! However, the more attacks your shield takes, the smaller it gets. If your shield breaks, you lose consciousness.

But more important than guarding is dodging. You just tap the Control Stick in a direction while holding the shield button. Tap the control stick down to do a sidestep dodge! Tap it backward to do a backward-roll dodge! And tap forward to do a forward-roll dodge and get behind your opponent!

If you can do these moves, your enemies will have a hard time landing their attacks. And they make you momentarily invincible, so using them proactively is OK.

Use these moves as much as you can even before you get used to them. Sometimes things become clearer that way.

Be sure to stick around for updates...

I'm guessing you didn't survive very long in those hours you played.

No actualy i was pretty good....i got owned by my friends because they play crazy (like 100s of hours) but i could beat a level 9(sometimes).

Aww you make me proud Simon... haha my Melee game has gone into the THOUSANDS of hours!!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

same here

I didn't know about dodging until about a year or so after I got it, but believe me if you were looking to get anyway in Smash Bros, you have to know how to dodge. I used to be a darn good dodger, but Yoshidude was the master in that particular area, although i was still the superior brawler at the end of the day Smilie.

I've played so much Melee in my time... 3 level 9s isn't too hard for me Smilie

What's hard... All Star in Very Hard mode. Smilie

EDIT: I've known about dodging since the original N64 game, you couldn't air dodge or sidestep, but you could still roll, which is possibly the most effective to use.

Me & a group of friends play Smash Bros often. I still enjoy it loads, & next to DBZ 2 on Wii, it's my most played multiplayer game.

Still, when it comes out I'd be glad to Brawl with some of you guys Smilie when I moved to Cornwall & thought I was king (I was when I lived in Muswell Hill, everyone sucked there Smilie) I sure had a reality check. I bet there are even better Smashers out there just waiting for me to... lose. Smilie

Oh my god, the shields look so much better than they did in Melee.

I doubt it, if you never used dodging.
