Industry News | Nintendo UK Speaks out on Hardcore Gamers

By Jorge Ba-oh 30.10.2007 31

Nintendo UK's General Manager David Yarnton recently spoke out on the company's approach towards hardcore gamers, and that they haven't been forgotten.

"It's important to know that we're not ignoring the hardcore gamer. They're still very important to us," Yarnton commented during a press conference in London this morning.

His comments stems from the bittersweet attention Nintendo's motion controlled box has received since launch. Critics have claimed that whilst the Wii has dramatically expanded the market, hardcore gamers are left with only few morsels to waggle their sticks at.

Speaking on the upcoming line-up, he reassured that "we have already catered on the Wii with Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy, and on DS with the Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass."

Thanks to Pro-G and C3 reader Marzy for the tip.

Yeah, I felt so much better after seeing Phantom Hourglass advertised on TV as a "great game for girls" Smilie

"Yeah, I felt so much better after seeing Phantom Hourglass advertised on TV as a "great game for girls"."

Nevertheless, it is a hardcore gamer's game. Of course they're appealing to the wider audience, but Zelda will always have it's core audience.

However, those three games are not enough for a core gamer. The Xbox 360 has a host of established and new hardcore IPs that we're not hearing about for the Wii.

But then again, we are getting Spore next year, which is pretty awesome, and MOH: Heroes 2 looks pretty good.

Hopefully we will get plenty of games which will appeal to both.

Yeah i saw an advert the other day it must of been about 2 minutes long! It was a girl playing all these different DS games from Morning till Evening

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

It's not very good marketing for a hardcore game. NoE's advert guy obviously didn't take Media GCSE/A levels, seeing as he/she should know that anything targeted at a boy will still sell to girls, but the moment you advertise something specifically at a girl (& make it obvious) is the moment the sales from boys go swooping down.

It's sexist, it sounds stupid, but it's true. Must be a gender psycological thing.

Because 3 games on 2 systems is more than enough!

And that's pretty interesting, iMod.

They've been naming those same three games for two years now. It's not even funny anymore.

EDIT: OK maybe it is still pretty funny! Smilie

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Ye3ah, that's what I find stupid. In these debates over how shit the Wii is because it's a casual console, people always say "No, it has games like Brawl, Mario Galaxy, and MP3!". When, in fact, it's not 'it has games like that', those are actually the only ones. 95% of Wii software is just casual bollocks.

It's tragic but true, & not entirely Nintendo's fault, since they're the only ones making good games for BOTH audiences (though I have to admit I'm happy with Capcom at the moment)

It really is funny, to the point that I want to cry. Tears of sadness that is.

With games like Zack & Wiki, & companies like Konami (surprisingly) telling developers to move on from the "testing" stages, I can see it changing.

What gives me (stupidly) relief, is that it's not Nintendo's fault, mostly. Sure they set the whole "graphics don't matter, innovation does" thing in motion, but Nintendo didn't mean it in the way Ubisoft show it. You'd think they had some sense, it's times like this I really do believe that all they care about is the money. Thankfully I don't feel that way about Nintendo in particular anymore, seeing as most of the casual games they have up for offer are quite brilliant. (Warioware & Wii Sports)

But NoE are just told to say things from higher up, so I don't see anything from this. NoE are the worst of the lot, even for something like the horrible adverts. Smilie

The Wii is doing fantasicaly for its life time thus far.

The Xbox360 has been out significantly longer remember.

The PS3, a more fair comparison, has absolutely nothing that even approachs Metroid, Galaxy, Zelda and yes, even Wii Sports.

Also, I think its a shame that people seem to forget stuff like Zack and Wiki....original stuff from 3rd partys, yet we keep moaning at Nintendo.
We have had lots of weak ports too, but also many strong ones. Resident Evil leading the pack, but also even EA has respected the Wii with Godfather ect. (supprisingly, EA doing better then Ubi)
We have Okami to look forward too as well.

Jesus, we have tenfold the amount of games compare to the GC, and have got Mario, Zelda and Metroid a heck of a lot faster.

Big games take time.
I for one dont want a repeat of the GC, where Nintendo rushed their main franchise's. (Zelda and Mario I'm looking at you).

It's not much, true, but really, if you actually have such a boring life you NEED all those games to keep you busy, I pity you.. XD
Not you specific, ofcourse, just the person that needs all those games.. ^^ *hides*

Thats true, Gamecubes big nintendo games were so poor in comparison to previous iterations Mario Sunshine, Windwaker, Mario Kart, Starfox.

So far Twilight Princess bettered Wind waker..ok it was a GC title aswell but it was till better than Windwaker.
Super Mario Galaxy is looking infinitely better than sunshine and Prime 3 is so much better than 1 and 2.
Then theres brawl being so packed with features its almost making melee look bad Smilie

I still worry about Mario kart wii though..prove me wrong nintendo!

Other than that yeah they should have mentioned Zack and wiki or Nights maby..rather than chime off the obvious big three.

I don't think Nintendo blow the trumpet of third-party games enough, and when they do they're often the bad ones. It should be in their interests to go on and on about them but it seems like they're purely concerned about the sales of their own games which has already proven fatal over the entire history of Nintendo's console business. They've got quite a few exclusive 3rd party games which clash with the Wii's overall bad reputation in certain areas, and yet all they ever mention is the stuff everyone already knows about and gets plenty of press, or shit like Red Steel.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

It's a shame the Wii has been flooded by these rushed mini-game fests or lazy ports; it really does hide some of the gems on the console.

I don't think there's anything wrong with "casual", but once a successful series of casual/party/non-gaming software came out third parties try to replicate the success but really badly. *cough* Midway *cough*

But there are a load of gems on the Wii to keep you occupied - Super Paper Mario, Trauma Center, Mario Strikers, MySims, Elebits, Sonic & the Secret Rings..

Aside from the big first-party-ones coming up, third parties have been quite a mixed affair but it's getting there. You've got your Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles on the way, Zack & Wiki, Fire Emblem, MoH: Heroes 2, Geometry Wars, SmackDown! vs. RAW 2008, No More Heroes, SC Legends, NiGHTS, Dragon Quest, FF:CC, Manhunt 2

It's faster than GameCube, and it's getting there, most definitely. The Wii does need to bump up its shooters and fighters; and with the number of gimmicky games declining it looks to be shifting to games with a lot more meat.

what nintendo needs is a brilliant fps with multiplayer that near matches halo 3's(or 2's) then we might get many developers who also want to match THAT, bringing us a good, not too kiddy semi-flood of hardcore games

Conduit FC: 0431-6660-0908

Three games. That is all. They keep on reiterating the same damn three games.

They probably have many projects bubbling away that we all have no idea about..

I am sure the Wii has a prosperous future with many great games to come from third parties also.

I'm being patient at the minute and not buying games for the Wii. It's in it's first year and all the rubbish usually comes out at the start of a consoles life. Just look at the DS. That didn't have much in it's first year. Now there are loads of good games, with more coming.

Mario & Metroid will be the start of a Strong second year for the Wii.

I just know it.

Surely they repeat three games, these are the three games they themselves publish. We have so search for more core games and that's not good. You should fire away with coregames, when asked about them.

But let's see: Resident Evil 4 Wii, Metroid 3, Zelda TP, Zack and Wiki, SSBB, Fire Emblem, Batallion Wars, Guitar Hero(?), Mario Kart,... Wat else?

"Now, wait: Zack and wiki? Are you nuts? two cuddly disgusting small creatures, one a boy, one a golden ape, doing tricks is a CORE GAME?"

"Yes, dear graphics-whore, X360-hardguy. Core games are not only thick men with suits, military, small vocabulary, big guns, graphic only, fps. It's more. As long as that is hammered into brains Wii is not having it simply in getting respect and core games, too.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Wat?

The REAL Zelda game was delayed by like... 2 whole YEARS, and Mario Sunshine was fucking amazing...

I don't see how Zack and Wiki is considered a hardcore game. It looks good, but I certainly wouldn't call it a hardcore game. The way it's being marketed especially is geared far more towards scummy non-gamers

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

Why is there no WW love? Smilie

So... when's F-Zero/Pikmin/Chibi-Robo/Kid Icarus plz?

This day just doesn't go by fast enough. I need my Battalion wars 2.Smilie

ya know i hate when people complain about how long it takes to get a good title out. If ya made a game in a day we would have another E.T. on our hands... -shudders at the thought- Good Games take time.. look at BrawlSmilie

Wow really? You would have thought with all that extra time they would relised ya know may be this sailing shit is actually the worst idea ever.
Windwaker was all right but it had to many broken elements. It will be remembered for it's presentation but not it's game play unfortunately.
