Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."
700,000 preorders in japan? or world wide? i'm sure one the ppl who bought it tell their mates, their mates wil lget interested, then the chain just goes on and on and on... the game looks espetacular its only 20 something days away!! I CAN'T WAIT!!!
Why!? It's because Nintendo can't be bothered to promote it. They expect that if you make a great game, great sales will follow without marketing. That'll be the case in the west at least. When Mario Sunshine was being released, there were adverts for it everywhere. & it was on GAMECUBE, which wasn't the best selling console ever was it? It still did better than Galaxy...
I reckon the sales will go mega this weekend myself. Have you not seen the loads of different TV spots they have in Japan SL?, there are loads. There is probably much else they are doing also that we would not know about. Wait on the weekly figures I say.
SuperLink said: Was there even a preview channel for this in Japan? Im beginning to doubt there will even be one over here...
Well ZSimon is the one to ask, but I doubt it, anyway like I say there really are loads of great ads that they have at their disposal. Some are small spots and others quite long that detail the simplicity of the control.
If they did roll out a channel they should forget about showing those conventional ads I think. They should show those couples of people playing the game on the Japanese Wii.com instead. I can easily see kids showing those to their parents to show how easy it is to control, and how they can get involved in playing the game also.
Nintendo really need to start building hype up for software now. They're still producing a big buzz for hardware, but considering it's still selling out, they now need to move some of the resources away from promoting the console and into promoting a large, exciting and exclusive games library. This can appeal to new gamers and existing Wii owners.
My dad was talking about the advert to Gears of War last christmas because of how much it was on. Mario Galaxy should be getting that kind of promotion.
Having one of the first exclusive RPGs sell very badly in Japan despite good reviews, is not a good way to promote 3rd parties to produce stand out titles for your system. Will Opoona get a US/Eur release if it sells very low numbers in Japan?
Good post. Yes I agree they should no concentrate on shifting software now. Opoona has it's character design to blame if you ask me, it is a fatal flaw despite the quality behind the game. I think it will struggle here for the same reasons.
WOW... you guys are so dramatic... coz the game hasn't sold as much as Sunshine now all of you think it's gonna flop... its pretty obvious this game is gonna sell into the millions... this is its first day.. wait til next week..

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!

Currently it's tracking slightly higher than Mario Party 8, which itself is now around 850,000 sales and still going strong. Mario Galaxy will definitely go on to surpass Sunshine's total of 800,000-850,000. Whether it goes on to beat Mario 64's ~1.5 million, though is another matter.
And I think Opoona is pretty much set for a Western release anyway, so no worries there. Koei brought G1 Jockey over and that bombed badly in Japan.
I agree with LS regarding Opoona. And with iPwnd regarding SMG. Just wait. There were a lot of Wii-games released these days, almost too much to buy. Therefore SMG will have a kind of slow start but grows. It's - thank god - a long seller and I think this one will be, too.

It's destined to be a great game, I think on the evidence of the full array of Japanese ads they will get the message across eventually. I cannot wait for this game, it's going to be sweet .
A Wii Channel can't make up for lack of other adverts. If you really want to show effort, if you want to make it a big hit, you've got to buy the whole package. Online promotion, console promotion, TV promotion, posters & adverts. This game is a huge contender for GOTY. Why isn't it getting the sales it deserves? Halo 3 was marketed brilliantly to the fact it was a bit OTT, but it sold didn't it? Even in Japan. A few sparce adverts isn't good enough. Personally I want T-Shirts & merchandise so I can buy them
I'm probably overreacting a bit, but the game looks like it deserves so much more than that, & it's because Nintendo would rather show a 3 month old advert of Nicole Kidman talking to herself while playing a game that may as well have been released a year ago.

I know many will still say this is a disastrous final result, but it has basically doubled its first day figure, which is at least a pretty impressive sign that interest is picking up. Apparently the ad campaign is also ramping up in Japan right now as well...
Those are good sales... what are you on about?!?! Quarter of a million... most games won't sell that much in half a year!

Those ads are excellent, I can definitely see them bearing fruit in sales. I think the latest U.S advert is pretty crappy in contrast. What puzzles me is why Nintendo do not see fit to have another dedicated channel for promotion of this game. Earlier today I had a little rant about it on Matt C's Blog-
"What concerns me is the probable approach to promoting this game after the Metroid 3 shambles. I would like to think Nintendo will have a -wide array- of advertising, all of which targets the various fractions.
The adverts in Japan are really fantastic, they are wide ranging and really do the job well. I really don't see why NOA have to divert far from the approach there, those small clips of various couples of people playing the game are great (Wii.com jp). Nintendo should have a U.S Wii Channel streaming similar vids so that kids can grab mom and dads arm to the TV to take a good look. Why the hell is there not a channel dedicated to this game yet!?. Nintendo are far to slow off the mark consistently, and what with all the great games out this Christmas Nintendo should be attempting to secure sales sharpish by making sure the paymasters, IE parents, get a good look at this game and how well they can easily partake in the fun, with minimum effort or experience.
These would you like to play ads are getting tiresome, games like SMG deserve so much more and it's a shame to bear witness to. When will Nintendo buck up their act? and give games that deserve their utmost support in promotion. If Wii is for everyone everyone should be targeted, but cleverly so.
On a side note I do hope that with the reshuffle things will change in time, no offence to those already in the respective positions."
