Nintendo Wii Media | Smash Update: Grabs and Throws

By Jorge Ba-oh 07.11.2007 26

It's moves tutorial time once more on the Official Smash Bros. website with two swordsmen Ike and Link demonstrating how to grab and throw in Brawl.

Surely you've learned how to shield to protect yourself. Have you learned that yet? Good. You've learned.

Then next up is grabbing. And throwing!

Grabs are also effective against enemies that are protecting themselves with their own shields. Shield against attacks, then grab. Or dodge. If you can understand this flow, you'll find they add a dimension that changes the simple charging attack.

At any rate, get in the habit of shielding when you're in trouble. Then you can think about what comes next.

Be sure to stick around for more updates...

first!

Throws aren't as powerful as they used to be in the original smash bros.

Good thing too, because they were too unbalanced in the original n64 version. I hope in brawl they don't make it too powerful. Grabbing is an essential strategy in melee, its good for set ups and keep yourself on balance.

especially when your opponent isn't expecting to meet fate yet until you give them the back throw from hell.Smilie

Ike has a pretty nice set of grabs/throws.

yay

OH GOD.. Someone please BAN that fool!
Anyway I wasn't expecting this to be on the same day as another update.. I would of thought they would of used it alone just as an update to fill the days!?!?!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

-hopefully not me-
Also i think they are using these small releases to keep us calm untill they release another character or some other ground shaking information (like sonic the hedghog's level or items)Smilie

He didn't mean you, probably the guy that said "first". But still, don't just post stuff like "yay"..

Wasn't this an older update? o.0;..

no they just confirmed basic play thats it. I hate updates like this now the jump technique that was confirmed earlier
that was worth posting to the site.

Before there was dodging and blocking...which looks a bit like this.

Smash brothers has so much stuff i never used...like this...probably why i was always thrashed.

For brawl i'll have to master everything to win the c3 smash tournament.

wowSmilie... You can't even catch items with that lack of skills since you need to air dodge to do it.

I just want to play against other people... Forget tournaments... Smilie
-Sigh- I would get bored waiting for other people to finish their round...Smilie

In the original Smash Bros I used to rely on throws to KO people. But they were so much weaker in Melee that you had to use Smashes.

Wonder what the strength will be this time.

You can catch items coming towards you???...so much stuff i didn't know

yeah or you can catch stationary items with the same technique. It's a skill well needed for tournaments just like wave-dashing.

I hope they keep the strength of the throw the same as it was in melee, it was well balanced there.

Speaking of which, they need to get rid of wave-dashing, and not just because I can't do it well...Smilie

I wish I could help you with that ShyGuy. Wave-dashing isn't hard if you do it once. Then all you would have to do is practice. Yeah if they get rid of wave-dashing I wouldn't be upset I would just try finding a new user only technique.

Well, I can do it, I know how, I just can't do it too well. Besides, I find it a pretty cheap move, kinda like only using power weapons in Halo, or snaking in Mario Kart DS, and I prefer not to use cheap tactics. That's just my opinion though, some people might find it to be a master move, a move that "pro" players use.

It's good to see that some people wouldn't mind it's removal, though if they do leave it in, I'd like to see if I could beat that technique, I've never played against someone who could use it.

Hmmmm... I never really thought of it like that, but your kinda right on both aspects. I've never played against anyone who wave-dashed constantly. Hell I only had one opponent that could wave-dash. So I guess that would be like the Halo rocket hogs huh?

Its gonna be like a whole new learning experiance for me, I was brilliant on N64, didn't really do the GC version as much as I should have, and I never learned all the niche moves. I always got out dodged and owned Smilie

Enoch Powell was right, and you know it.

Soooooooo...

Heres a random video that someone made.

Characters that glide generally have a longer wave dash.

I love wave-dashing... Smilie it's awsome especially when my friends come around and I use it.. they get so pissed off!! Smilie Anyway from what I see most of you are gonna be too easy to beat on this game!! Smilie
