Nintendo News | Smash Update: Player Handicaps

By Jorge Ba-oh 14.11.2007 7

Nintendo continue the Smash Bros. Dojo updates with a look at player handicaps, giving players a starting damage in battles.

Be kind to beginners! If all you do in brawls is beat up people who don't know left from right, they'll never understand the rules of the game, right?

So until now, I've always made sure to include handicaps in each game in the series.

But, I began to think that there isn't much thrill in just making yourself weaker, so I changed the system.

First, find the Handicap option on the Rules screen.

Then you'll see something new.

Click-click-click! Ratchet up the handicap.

You start with your initial damage meter boosted!

Even when you reappear.

The strength of each character doesn't change, so then you can show your skills to your opponent!

Also, you can use this not only for handicapping, but also for starting all players at the same damage

I like this system a lot better. The old system, you get while you are 10% and you die.

Handicap matches are awesome. Back in the old smash bros games we used to have 3 against 1 matches where the person by himself had full hadicap and the damage ratio was moved up to 200% so one it from the guy would send you flying. It was great strategic fun trying to beat the solid guy. The games were called Freeza matches cus back then freeza from DBZ was the most solid guy around.

Cool - I like this. I never fiddled around with handicaps before because I can't stand dealing with "limitations." This will be an unobtrusive way to level the playing field.

I always thought the handicap shuld work like that...Smilie

I've never used Handicap... so UI'm not sure if I'm gonna use it now!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

Nice - can lead to some very interesting team matches!

I wish they'd kept the old system too though.
It just can't compare to Mario, Luigi and Peach teaming up against a super strong Bowser.
Good times! Smilie

I do think this idea is more sensible however, and makes a greater deal of sense.
