Nintendo News | Unreal Engine 3 in Development

With Unreal Tournament 3 gracing stores this week, Epic Games have confirmed that the engine behind the much anticipated game is being ported to Nintendo's innovative white box.
The engine is available for both box 360 and the PlayStation 3, however has left Wii developers without an option. Speaking to Kikizo, Epic's Mark Rein revealed, "I know one of our licensee who's giving it a shot. It's their own port, in the same way Ubisoft brought Unreal Engine 2 to the Wii."

we'll see how well it goes without the power of shader model 3.0

NOT SAHDER MODEL 3.0!
ahem. didn't the guy who like came up with the engine have a massive go at Nintendo for the wii being so underpowered?
Must feel like a complete tool now that its gone on to be so successful and they can't make a single penny out of the wii.

Oh!! Even if it's scaled back a little bit it will still look bloody amazing. I don't care for the textures that much, it's the lighting I'm interested in.

It's a step in the right direction for those to create engines that even mimic the real deal, that way games can be brought over even if they lack the polish of other versions.
I have just been playing the latest version of it on Unreal Tournament 3 Beta that uses UE3.1, and it is amazing!, far better than what GoW showed when the engine had it's debut. PS3 owners have got a great game coming their way.

Firstly Kotaku said, that a company does the port of their own.
Secondly Unreal Engine 2 is already ported and isn't used widely on Wii as it seems.
Secondly in the link they say, that Unreal Engine 2 was used on Red Steel - and quite frankly it was very good looking indoors - but after that? I never heard of a lot of stuff going on graphicswise on Wii.
I hope they scale Unreal 3 Engine well and squeeze some wonders out of Wii, because this little box has a lot of horsepower, which has to be brought to light, under its hood.

I wouldn't have thought it would mean substantially better graphics, just easier ports.
It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Yeah, I think Grumblemaster is right.
We need some one to built a great engine, which tweaks Wii into graphics at least in SMG level. It was a problem with Gamecube, too. No one unleashed its power. It was way better then Xbox1 in polygons and at least as good as it in terms of effects like lights and shaders.

As long as games start being comparable to SMG, and not the scum of the PS2 then I'll be happy. It's criminal to think that we should be playing games on Wii that look worse than games we played 3 years ago on GC, and that was

I know this is unrelated but what the heck happened to SMG! 5th in the charts, this is the best game on the Wii yet what happened.
Anyway, I think it's great that the unreal 3 engine is being ported to work on the Wii, now it will show that SMG isn't just a one off with the graphics, hope the games will be as good as the graphics, just like SMG.
Edit; i've just read the whole interview, and i hope that that unnamed developer proves that the unreal engine 3 can be easily initialised with the Wii, cos it gets on my nerves when developers say that it's just an overclock Gamecube with extra RAM. because anyone can see it isn't, and the GC's graphics were definately nothing to moan about in the first place.

Sorry for picking on you, but this is why people who don't have a clue shouldn't be commenting on such things. Where does any reliable source say that the GC was better with polygons? Where is the reliable source that says the GC was "at least as good as Xbox in terms of lighting and shaders"? You clearly don't know what you're talking about, and are just going on anecdotal evidence which someone's told you, or what you read off some guy's post on some forum. Xbox games had the best graphics of last gen consoles for one simple reason- they were on the most powerful console. If you say otherwise, then the games prove you a liar.
The GC was very nearly on a par with Xbox. The one thing it sucked at though, and which Xbox could do, was shaders. I don't know anything about graphics, and even I know that. As for this piece of news, I'll be really interested to see what comes of it. I imagine it'll just end up in a really scaled-down version of UE3. The fact that it's happening does not make the "Wii is a GC 1.5" thing a lie. All it means is that someone's having a go at it. You've got no idea how much they're going to scale it down.
Remember, someone also ported GTA3 to the NES. Doesn't mean NES is anywhere near as powerful as the PS2.

Yeah I think people need to accept the fact that games on Wii will never look nearly as good as they would on xbox360. When you bought a Wii, you chose to trade off graphics for a new control scheme. For developers on Wii, they need to really push the artistic direction to make up for the low specs. And as Grumbler said, this new engine just makes it easier for developers to make and port games over to Wii, and set I guess a standard.

I've accepted the fact that wii won't push 360 graphics, but most people here also know that the wii is capable of so much more. Most og the stuff you see on wii is dirty ps2 ports.
