Industry News | DS Sales Soar in the UK

By Jorge Ba-oh 27.11.2007 13

In the run-up to Christmas 2007 sales for Nintendo's dual-screen portable have hit an all new high in the UK with over 191,000 units soaring off the shelves last week.

Like its home-counterpart the Wii, the DS has been leaping from success to success and judging by the performance of the hardware in the market last week, it's no exception.

According to MCV, "We're obviously delighted to be able to announce this. Momentum has been increasing on DS sales and to achieve the highest weekly sales figure ever in the history of the games market is fantastic."

The previous hardware record was set by Sony's PSP when it first launched back in September 1st '05.

Woah, 191,000!Smilie

Guess people love celebrities playing DSes.Smilie

Yerp thats the way to win the masses give them a load of faces they think they've seen on the TV!!

Anyways I get my new DS Lite on thursday so thats another 1 making a grand total of 191,001 yay me!

Im also shocked to heard that the record was held by the PSP, I didnt think it sold that well on launch day guess I was way out there!

Yeah, I bet that was really good "promotion" for DS. Sometimes peopel are so obsessed with celebs it creeps me out.

Anyway, considering it's so close to XMAS, and the DS' aren't too good for stock at the moment anyway, this is quite an incredible feat. Even for a 3 year old Console like DS, to sell this much, and even go on to break records. o.0;

I thikn the Wii may be able to do the same once it gets more killer games. I guess Portable gaming is just a lot more "doable" for many, it's probably one of the reasons it's so popular. It's just casual.

Latest fad at my college is playing Pok

The DS is awesome.

My gosh thats a lot of DS's Smilie Who would of thought Fern & Philip from This Morning playing Brain Academy on a Cab would of sold DS's Smilie

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

It's because Sony (stupidly) delayed the PSP launch from a date or about March to September. When it finally did launch everyone jumped on it...then it started to slide.

Looking back it seems clear that the DS would have won in the UK regardless of that heatstart, but at the time it seemed pretty significant.

I remember an event held in late 2005 where Nintendo president Iwata first showed off the Wiimote, regarding the age old debate on graphics over gameplay and vice versa, he stated then, with conviction, 'everybody will say we were right'.
Mr. Iwata isn't a Prophet, but firmly believed Quote; 'Nintendo will fail or succeed by bringing something new to the industry'. Either way, they knew all to well the potential of Wii and all that has become Wii, also DS.
Out of all natures instinctive behaviourisms, humans are the only species, (that I can think of) that play not just to learn, but for fun, so long as Nintendo continue their philosophy in gameplay 1st, they'll be around forever.
So yeah, Wii's doing great, but Nintendo's doing better.
I think its about time some of these developers stood up and acknowledged what Iwata said and I think at the next conference he should say 'I told you so' hopefully causing more infliction of damage in massive ammounts.

Amazing sales Smilie, I have a feeling this will actually be topped in the first week of December.

I don't see how it can, I'm surprised it even hit this! DS' are starting to get low on stock again! Smilie

FFS Wii would have a great XMAS if Nintendo would actually get some bloody units out.

At first, I really didnt think Nintendo would achieve this "broadening the market to people who dont play video games" thing, but the sheer amount of adverts, and media attention the DS and Wii have been getting, from OLDER people is ridiculous.

There was a brain training advert on TV a few days ago that could easily have been confused with some sort of medical drug promotion, with the 50 year old woman seriously talking about how brain training helped her do this and that. Really impressed by Nintendo.

Careful about the 'older' stuff manSmilie At least I can say nearing my big 5-0, I have been playing computer games in an unbroken timeline since 1974. Both casual and hardcore - only way to goSmilie
