Nintendo Wii News | Dragon Quest Swords Hits Europe, Spring 2008

By Adam Riley 05.12.2007 13

Hot on the heels of the revelation that It's a Wonderful World is coming to Europe early next year, Square Enix has also confirmed that the Wii game 'Dragon Quest Swords' will be landing within the same time-frame.

Square Enix Ltd. has also confirmed today that that DRAGON QUEST SWORDS: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors will be released across all PAL territories in Spring 2008, exclusively on Wii. The game is an action-packed Virtual Experience where the player becomes the hero of the story. As the hero, the player must use the Wii controller to control their legendary sword, and fight off horde after horde of monsters. Slice at enemies, parry with your shield and block attacks to launch powerful counter-combos.

DRAGON QUEST SWORDS contains all the familiar features people have come to expect from the DRAGON QUEST series, such as a system to power up weapons and the ability to perform a large array of powerful attacks. Additional mini-games add to the fun as you catch darts with your shield and try to defeat Slime monsters as quickly as possible to win bonus items.

"We are delighted to be announcing our first Wii title for PAL territories. The DRAGON QUEST series is a phenomenon in Japan that has already sold over 43 million units worldwide, but is still relatively new to Europe. With today's announcement of DRAGON QUEST SWORDS and the forthcoming release of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: Joker on the Nintendo DS, the series is set to charm more fans throughout the world."
- John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Ltd.

DRAGON QUEST SWORDS: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors is set in a town at the foot of Avalonia Castle, where a young man enjoys a peaceful life with his father. That young man is you. It is your sixteenth birthday at last, and time to take the Walk of the Worthy, the trial of strength, which all young Avalonian males must undergo upon coming of age. You will need to put all of your training in the ways of the sword into practice if you are to pass the test, and take your rightful place amongst Avalonia's warriors. Should you succeed

Sounds good.

This is actually coming out here? o.0; Wow, I thought it'd go to US first... but nothing's been announced for there either. What about Dragon Quest Monsters Joker? That ever gonna make it here?

DQM: J is also coming - check out the quote from Yamamoto-san. It was announced a while back as Q1 2008, along with FFCC: Ring of Fates on DS.

FF:CC aswell? Great news! That's one of my most wanted DS titles yet! Smilie

Not sure if I'll get the DQ games though... Dunno if I can cope with another RPG series. o.o

Only reason I've held off reviewing the DQIV on DS is that I'd give it a 10/10 and probably get roasted as an RPG fanboy Smilie

Seriously great game. How DQS holds up, though, we'll see...since it's very different to the main series.

they alot of wii game that i feel have miss out big for over xmas this is one of them

Why have they suddenly started calling them Dragon Quest again? The localized versions have always been called Dragon Warrior.

Not that I'm complaining, really, Dragon Quest sounds better. I'm just curious.

Well DQVIII, released on PS2 more recently, was still called Dragon Quest. I'm not sure why, maybe it has something to do with Square and Enix's merge, and Square's obsession with making the Western and eastern releases consistent? Smilie

For Europe it made more sense to ditch the 'VIII' since it was the first ever entry into the main series that had hit Europe. I'm just glad the 'Dragon Warrior' name was dropped in favour of the original Japanese name.

DQ: Journey of the Cursed King did really well on PS2, to be honest, so that's why I pleaded and pleaded with S-E at the beginning of this year to bring Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime to Europe on DS. Sadly, though, despite a lot of support, the upper management had final say and because it bombed in the US they decided against the risk. Let's hope the same doesn't happen to Front Mission (which WAS promised as 'TBC 2008', but has been ominously quiet).

With DQS hitting 500,000 in Japan, the US and Europe have to really keep sales high or else it might put S-E off bringing DQIV's port over...Actually, sorry, scratch that. DQIV already has a 90%-translated English script hidden in it.

It's great that we have the original name now, it always pissed me off that it was different.

Won't be buying this game, it's a miss from all that I have read, the on rails mechanic sounds crap and the Wii Remote functionality sounds like it's nonsense. I am looking forward to all the others on DS and Wii-Ware, including RW.

yeah sounds good. I dont like what the big cheese has been saying over at SE as of late.

DQVIII is occupies 90% of bargain-bin real-estate in UK retail.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

originaljohn, are you talking about how he seems to favour the Xbox 360 and wishes Sony would make its mind up about what to do with PS3? Yeah, didn't sound too positive towards Wii, in all honesty.

Grumble, sad, but true, yeah. I couldn't even sell a sealed copy of the PS2 game for
