Cubed3 Relaunch. Now with more Mushrooms!

By Jorge Ba-oh 31.01.2008 112

A big welcome to the new C3 with a brand-new look! Months in the running, we've finally taken the shackles off the beast and released it into the wild world of the Mushroom Kingdom... or something along those lines! Alongside our slightly darker skin, the site has undertaken an overhaul in various areas: in particular with how you guys can interact with the website and likeminded members.

The main focus behind the design is to try and simplify the experience, and bring out features that were perhaps hidden away in Bowser's castle. Console pages, which previously acted as a directory search, have been glossed over with recent forum discussions, top games, content and genre searches to try and bring much more meat to your Nintendo-exploring. Much of the site's backend has been rewritten to solve existing problems, and improve the site's efficiency and stability in the long run. C3's main sections can be explored through the top-level navigation, with featured and recent content permanently housed on the right-hand side of the page. However, as people visit for different reasons you can now select what menu items are shown on your navigation by clicking on the ickle title-bars on each.

The forum experience has seen revisions, with no-refresh posting, star-giving and editing aiming to speed up discussion and make posting more comfortable and easier to use. Be sure to look through the various parts of the site for more enhancements/revisions!

In terms of content, the launch of the latest C3 brings back some older features with the podcast set to ignite your listening buds in the near future, gaming factory turning the cogs of creative "if-only" gaming design and the possibility for the much loved Hound to reawaken from his slumber. In the coming months we'll be bringing you much more features and personal content through staff blogs and more industry ramblings/analysis.

A thanks to: JQuery for providing the core Javascript effects/functions, FamFamFam for the brilliant icon-set and LastRSS for feed parsing. Thanks to the Cubed3 staff for putting up with the numerous delays for the launch and for whipping up some launch goodies for the upcoming week and beyond.

With any new version there's likely to be multiple bugs and overlooked problems Apologies in advance! Please mail jb[at]cubed3.com with any issues you've encountered so we can whip out the old Fudd for a clean up!

Many thanks for supporting Cubed3 over the years, we hope that we're up there somewhere in your bookmarks ready for Nintendo news, analysis and most importantly: fun!

No Longer Temporarily Banned.

only one small point, although i love the look of rounded corners, Nifty.js is a little slow and it adds a good few seconds to the final render.

Like the new look!

But my little blog now has the wrong comments under it. They must be comments from another blog.:-?

One other thing you might not have seen yet JB is that the XML feed doesn't have the domain in the URL, so all the links are like "http://www.google.com/news/9443" instead of "http://www.cubed3.com/news/9443"

i like to have the C3 feed on my Google homepage, so its important to me Smilie

Looks excellent JB! *Goes wandering around the site like child in candy shop* Smilie

well done.

A fail so epic, it may just be a win.

Very nice, like having an avatar.

i like the new skin very much... but i can't find the blogs at all.... I guess some one will have to piont it out for me because i can be quite blind some times...Smilie

I go to bed... And I wake up and find this!

I got lost, honestly Smilie But it's real easy to figure stuff out, now Smilie

<3 <3

Now this is gonna take some getting used to!

I think I'll reserve my opinion until I've had a fiddle about with it. Smilie

Its tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Good!

I love this JB. Finally my dream has come true! A new better C3.
Jb is this a web 2.0 site?

Edit:

Zcollvee - thanks - I'm not sure about whether its a web2.0 site, but I've tried to improve on user interaction and speed. The site is fully CSS/xhtml as opposed to a mixture of code that the old one had. Also, tags and no-refresh content helps, I think.

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated, I'll be looking through the site issues as we go along.

If you've got major issues like logging in please shoot me an email to jb[at]cubed3.com Smilie

I like the way that i can make that recently added box small(I hate distractions)

Well it took me about 5mins to guess what my password was Smilie

I like the fact that you can scroll across a wide post (as demonstrated by zcollvee), but I think the posting section is too narrow. Why doesn't a page take up the whole width? (I'm not sure that actually makes sense, but I know what I mean.)

Also, the recent topics page seems to have vanished, which is annoying- I always used to use that. Oh, and also I haven't worked out how to give people stars to people?

Overall it looks nice though. Smilie

Edit 2: I just noticed that when you edit it says your current user name, whereas before it said your first user name, which is obviously a good thing!

Really great design, definitely looks better than it did before Smilie

I'll only comment on the things I don't like but that doesn't mean the new layout is bad. I actually like it pretty much and the header is very cool.

*White text on a blue background is not very good IMO. Don't know if that's because of my LCD monitor but it's a bit of a pain to read the usernames or the tags in the reply box.

*I don't like the plain red text either ('Notices and suggestions') :/.

*I found the old font for the "Cubed 3" text below the logo better than the current one. This one's a bit too narrow IMO.

*Also I find the boxes with the new members and the top members of the month way too big, if not completely useless. I mean, seeing those big avatars is really annoying, even more when there is no avatar at all.

*Finally, and that's the most important point, I think the Recently Posted box is too narrow. That's the only thing I look at on the forum's main page and it's become tiny Smilie.

*Oh and there's a bug with the text that appears when you want to know who posted last : you see the member's ID and not his/her username.

I guess that's all :p.

The site is looking goodSmilie I just need some time to get used to itSmilie

Some of the smilies like Smilie aren't working for me...and logging in went wierd but i've finally managed to get on Smilie - Looks great!

And what happened to stars???

And in forum threads i can't choose the page number from the bottom, while in new threads the page scrolling is only at the bottom.

Wow, I was shocked when the site loaded. Great job, looks very nice. And posting directly from the news article is much more friendlier. w00t! Smilie

Looks very nice. Might take a bit to get use to, but very good work overall! Smilie

It's not letting post a blog. I typed it up, clicked "save", and then the page refreshed with a blank blog. It didn't show up on the recent blogs and it still said my last blog was one I did about a concert about a year ago. I tried again (this type saving on my computer what I typed), and the same thing happened.

I would've sent a pm, but when I clicked "compose," a white page that only said "we'll be right back..." appeared.

I like it, I really do. But when I try to wand my way through the log-in thing with Opera, it doesn't accept it. Also, my password shows up in my URL bar after I log in. Or is that normal?
