Cubed3 Relaunch. Now with more Mushrooms!

By Jorge Ba-oh 31.01.2008 112

A big welcome to the new C3 with a brand-new look! Months in the running, we've finally taken the shackles off the beast and released it into the wild world of the Mushroom Kingdom... or something along those lines! Alongside our slightly darker skin, the site has undertaken an overhaul in various areas: in particular with how you guys can interact with the website and likeminded members.

The main focus behind the design is to try and simplify the experience, and bring out features that were perhaps hidden away in Bowser's castle. Console pages, which previously acted as a directory search, have been glossed over with recent forum discussions, top games, content and genre searches to try and bring much more meat to your Nintendo-exploring. Much of the site's backend has been rewritten to solve existing problems, and improve the site's efficiency and stability in the long run. C3's main sections can be explored through the top-level navigation, with featured and recent content permanently housed on the right-hand side of the page. However, as people visit for different reasons you can now select what menu items are shown on your navigation by clicking on the ickle title-bars on each.

The forum experience has seen revisions, with no-refresh posting, star-giving and editing aiming to speed up discussion and make posting more comfortable and easier to use. Be sure to look through the various parts of the site for more enhancements/revisions!

In terms of content, the launch of the latest C3 brings back some older features with the podcast set to ignite your listening buds in the near future, gaming factory turning the cogs of creative "if-only" gaming design and the possibility for the much loved Hound to reawaken from his slumber. In the coming months we'll be bringing you much more features and personal content through staff blogs and more industry ramblings/analysis.

A thanks to: JQuery for providing the core Javascript effects/functions, FamFamFam for the brilliant icon-set and LastRSS for feed parsing. Thanks to the Cubed3 staff for putting up with the numerous delays for the launch and for whipping up some launch goodies for the upcoming week and beyond.

With any new version there's likely to be multiple bugs and overlooked problems Apologies in advance! Please mail jb[at]cubed3.com with any issues you've encountered so we can whip out the old Fudd for a clean up!

Many thanks for supporting Cubed3 over the years, we hope that we're up there somewhere in your bookmarks ready for Nintendo news, analysis and most importantly: fun!

I think there are one or two bugs that need squashing. I know Jorge is keeping an eye on this news thread and will slowly but surely iron out all the little niggles.

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

Beautiful!!Smilie

Thanks again for your comments & feedback guys, really appreciated as errors that have cropped up now didn't come up during local testing (i.e. it worked on my pc, but weirdly doesn't work when uploaded).

It leaves a massive blank and then the posts are in a messed up order. Ty

Hmm - unfortunately I can't test it on the PS3 browser, any chance of possibly taking a photo and sending it across? IMO, forum posting aint too good on a console without a keyboard.

EDIT: Just wanted to tell you. Your RSS feed doesn't seem to be working.

Fixed - It goes to the news feed now Smilie In the future I'll link it to a proper feed (i.e. news, reviews & previews).

It's not letting post a blog. I typed it up, clicked "save", and then the page refreshed with a blank blog. It didn't show up on the recent blogs and it still said my last blog was one I did about a concert about a year ago. I tried again (this type saving on my computer what I typed), and the same thing happened.

I would've sent a pm, but when I clicked "compose," a white page that only said "we'll be right back..." appeared.

Cool - I've fixed both - blogs should work now; they didn't before as I forgot to add a line that needed to be there for the "online" c3.

Compose PMs are working, sorry for that problem earlier Smilie

One complaint though, no page skip thing at the bottom of the page, and the post preview thing seems really slow, might just be me.

Page skip has been implemented into the forum topics at the bottom. Post Preview now works properly too Smilie

Will take a look at all the other errors mentioned guys, keep em coming please!

Awesomeness, jb.

One small thing, could you move the next & previous page links up so it's in-between the last post of the page and the reply box... you know, like it used to be.

A friend of mine has just tried to post a Reader Review, I'm not sure of the details but he said it didn't go up for some reason.

Not sure if it was a coincidence or not, but just thought you should know anyway Smilie

Also, I just hugely updated my game + wishlist collection on my profile, and none of my NES or GBC games are turning up.

I've got the blog up on C3 now.

However, when I look at all of my blogs, the newest are listed newest to oldest, except the blog I just posted is listed last. It's also not showing up on the recent blogs list, either.

I imagine it's kind of hectic for you right now. Thanks a lot for all the hard work you put into this site, JB!

*edit*
One more thing JB, I don't know how to give anyone stars! I can't see a star button with anyone's posts except for mine, and I can't give myself a star (how sad). I'll give you two stars if you get that fixed Smilie

TAG: That American Guy

Hehe, here's another few for the haystack JB:

The sent box (so glad we have one now!)isn't really working. Any time I click on one of the messages, it redirects me and says PM doesn't exist.

Also, my recent blog's a bit messed up. It isn't registering as "staff" and the comments are a bit messed up...linky

Anyhow, can't say it enough how awesome the place looks Jb. Smilie

I couldn't log on last night with Safari (3.0.4 leopard), but it would seem that you've gotten that fixed!

I haven't said it yet and I must: JB, you're amazing, and your site looks fantastic.

Quote button isn't working for me and polls aren't appearing, makes it hard to vote in the Members Threads. I'm using Opera btw and I've deleted all my cookies but still nothing. It doesn't like the Wand Password tool either and enjoys logging me in and out randomly.

I don't like it as much as the old C3 but I'm sure once all the kinks are ironed out it'll grow on me.

Where is the star button?
It only appears on top of my post. I want to give a star to JB.
And change the favicon to something blue to match the siteSmilie

Just noticed a few other things.

I'm not sure if this can be easily sorted, but C3 seems to run much slower than before on older systems. I guess this is to be expected though.

So how easy would a C3 lite site be to cook up? Either that or C3 Wii is still very good, but it doesn't really have a presence on the new site yet Smilie

I still use C3 Wii whenever I use Wii Opera. Problem is my keyboard is broken (or just doesn't work with my Wii anymore...) for some reason, but that's for another thread. Smilie

Its a little too early for that I must say. First get the Star system on C3 working! Then continue on the Lite and Wii versions of itSmilie

EDIT: Search does not work

Smilie

It works just as fast for me, if not faster.

Yeah, it works faster on my newer PC, but for an old PC I used earlier it was definitely going slower.

Smilie Nice work Jorge... I'm impressed, the home page looks awsome Smilie I like the look of the site! *thumbs up*

One thing at the top of the page where the title of the topic is its telling me.. "You are currently not logged in!" Or does this appear for everybody!?!?!

Anyway it looks very nice, good job!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

I wrote a blog, it saved in my profile but not appearing on the list. Also, the date on it keeps going back to 00-00-0000.

And another thing:

Smilie

Tut tut tut Jb. 301 errors!

( Edited 03.03.2008 15:27 by X )

Smilie
ZOMFG! That surprised me! (Niiice! There is a spoiler button!)

Love the new style! SmilieSmilieSmilie

Opera

First of all, I think it's well sexy.

Just a couple critiscisms: I agree that the avatar icons and the top star icons on the forum page are too large. Maybe you could have them disguisable like the windows to the left?

Also, perhaps the left side-bar/column is too wide, which is most apparent on the front page than anywhere else.

Errors:

  • Preview scores on the game page are appearing out of ten, rather than out of five.

  • Polls don't appear for me

  • The second page of this thread is pushed way down leaving a whole lot of blue space, meaning I have to scroll to see the comments.

  • In the recently added window, reviews are listed as features (pretty sure they're not....?)

  • I'm no longer staff =P

  • IANC said:

  • I can't edit comments.

No reaction when I press 'Save Changes'

    You sure?

Hang on, WHERE IS MY BLOG? The smileys don't work on the blog screen.Smilie

    JB said You sure?

    Ya, I is sure.

Um, I'm having a couple of problems...
When I click 'save changes' when editing..nothing happens. So I can't edit my posts.
And when I click 'quote' above someones post...nothing happens.

Doesn't seem to be effecting everyone though, because I haven't seen anyone else mention it, and other people are clearly editing their posts...
