Smash Bros. Leads Nintendo Wii to Victory in Japan

Update - The Top 50 Media Create software sales have now been released, showing that Nintendo was indeed able to ship out far more copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii than most expected, as the game has sold through a whopping 95% of its stock to sell around 820,000 copies in its first week on sale in Japan. On the hardware side, even though Wii takes the top, the boost is lower than some may have thought, plus the DS has been overtaken by the PSP! Check out the results below:

Stick around for more chart updates next week...

Original Story, 01/02/08: Despite all the talk of various retailers only getting a low supply of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it seems that the Kyoto Company was still able to pour enough units onto shop shelves to ensure the hotly anticipated Wii fighter would blow away the competition this coming week and become the fastest-selling Wii game so far in Japan. Below are its sales, along with some other new releases, all courtesy of Japanese blogger sinobi (first day numbers are based on Famitsu leaked numbers):

  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii, Nintendo) - 500,000 (80% sell-through of initial stock)
  • Devil May Cry 4 (PS3, Capcom) - 140,000 (60% sell-through)
  • Haruhi (PS2) - 105,000
  • Tales of Destiny Director's Cut (PS2, Bandai Namco) - 70,000 (Limited Edition - 60,000, Normal - 10,000 60% sell-through)
  • Disgaea 3 (PS3, Nippon Ichi) - 40,000 (Limited Edition - 20,000, Normal - 20,000)
  • Devil May Cry 4 (360, Capcom) - 30,000 (60% sell-through)
  • Assassin's Creed (PS3, Ubisoft) - 20,000
  • Family Ski (Wii, Bandai Namco) - 10,000
  • Houkago no Shounen (NDS) - 4,500
  • Sega Rally REVO (PS3, SEGA) - 2,000
  • Sega Rally REVO (360, SEGA) - 1,600
  • Sega Rally REVO (PSP, SEGA) - 1,000 (Overall 10% of initial stock on all formats sold)
  • Mushishi: Amefuru Sato (NDS) - 1,000
But just how quickly can Nintendo get more stock onto the shelves? When it releases NEW Super Mario Bros., the initial stock levels were meant to be lower than expected, around 700,000, but the game ended up selling 900,000 in its first week due to quick re-stocking. Could that be the case here and the game could end up closer to the million mark by next Wednesday's Media Create chart update?

Wow that's a lot. To be expected of Wii's most anticipated game.

Indeed, impressive!

By the way, this is a news story of Adam's as you might be able to tell by the style but my name has been attached to it...hopefully sorted soon!

You can tell by his style? What's his style?

Wow, that's great. Combine these infos: 500+k sold and shortages at small retailers means, that every retailer wanted to stock it. Great! So a big game there. And they say you can't sell core games on Wii. Shittalkers...!

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

this is basically a record breaking game, tht means it kicks halo 3's ass, but that means over 500,000 japanese (and probably importers) are out there to kick my ass

Aren't new copies of the game supposed to be shipped to retailers this Week-End ? I heard it was so...

SmilieWow, that is damned impressive! I guess we should've expected it though, with all the hype surrounding it.

I was expecting it to do that well in Japan, bet it wont sell that many in england, too many chavs who cant tell a good game from EA shovelware rubbish

Double that number and stick an extra 0 at the end and that will be what the worldwide sales will be like by the years end I reckon.Smilie

Mike means it's my style because it's sales stuff...kind of my forte Smilie Anyway, this is a fantastic start for a Wii game in Japan because people were worried 'hardcore' games just weren't selling too well, especially after the slow start Mario Galaxy had.

Can't ignore how well DMC4 has done, though...even Disgaea on PS3 has performed very well!

Did the game boost Wii sales? I can imagine a lot of core-gamers waiting for Brawl before Wii purchase.

Online is going to be hectic with so many people playing it!

Now on twitter, predicting celebrity death headlines! @thedaytheydie

Thats an amazing amount for first day sales.
What was mario galaxy's first day sales? i cant remember it off hand but im sure it was no where near this!

oh and yeh you would expect console sales to jump too

Senior ModeratorStaff Member

Marco_V, Super Mario Galaxy had retailer pre-orders of 700,000 units due to the expected hectic sales. However, it started very slow and only amassed 250,585 sales in its whole first week! Smilie

Thats a lot of copies but i bet the US is gonna have more. Im gonna start a countdown of my own starting today.
t-minus 37 days and counting...

This is phil. If your conciousness must absolutely intrude upon mine, leave a message.

Of course the US will have more...Mario Galaxy did what, about 1.2 million in its first month in the US and another 1.7 or so million (rough guesses here, can't dig up the old numbers as C3's search engine's currently buggered).

I think Family Ski's done quite well for itself in a strong week. I think the fact it makes use of the Wii Balance Board will have helped!

Actually I'm not all that surprised. This has to the biggest title for the Wii since Galaxy. Serious high production values here. Hecka tons reply value. You'd be dumb to be a Wii owner and not have this game. But yeah that is quite the achievement. Good Job HAL & Nintendo.

Very awesome, hopefully Nintendo keeps the shelves filled. Wonder how strongly it will sell when it hits stateside.

And the great news? Just as I wrote in the story, sinobi is now saying Nintendo has indeed sent out another shipment super-fast to fulfil more of the demand. So that purported initial stock level from Day One is definitely higher now...Perhaps we'll see a final result close to a million after all! Smilie

It's great that so many sold in one day, the number of pre-orders must have been millions for retailers to complain about stock shortages.

Blimey! Fantastic figures! Smilie

Cubed3 Admin/Founder & Designer

Thats fairly high, its ashame that despite the delay they couldnt get even more copies out, they probably could have easily sold a million if there were a million copies of the game out there.

Even though 95% of the stock had been sold through, it could lack sales if there was acess stock in places that didnt need it.
