Left Field Talk Nitrobike Sequel, DS version, WiiWare Project
Interview by Adam Riley :: Wednesday 6th February 2008

There has been a lot of attention focused on Ubisoft's Wii exclusive project Nitrobike, all thanks to Left Field Productions being the same team that worked with Nintendo on the fantastic Excitebike 64. Cubed3 was lucky enough to catch up with the company's CEO, James Higgins to discuss the project and much more.

Cubed3's Adam Riley: First of all, how long has the Nitrobike project been in development and how different is the team from the Excitebike 64 group?

James Higgins, CEO of Left Field Productions: Nitrobike has been in full development since late 2006. But it marks the fulfilment of our long-standing wish to get back onto a Nintendo platform with a high quality racing game. Our team has evolved a lot since we developed Excitebike 64, but at the core of Nitrobike is still the same designer that Nintendo loaned to us back then, and who worked with us on our critically-acclaimed MTX: Mototrax.

AR: Do you feel there is added pressure on the team given the high quality of Excitebike 64? Or is it instead seen as more of a challenge to surpass that game?

JH: Excitebike 64 is a great game and that only acted as inspiration for our Nitrobike team. Nitrobike offers the kind of rhythm-based racing Excitebike fans expect but with all of the high-speed adrenaline thrills expected in the current consoles.

AR: How have you found Wii development so far? Have there been any particular surprises with the hardware, either positive or negative?

JH: Wii development is great and Nintendo have been very helpful

wow... that's very honest. Aside from the great interview, there are a lot of surpisingly straight answers. No NDA-gibberish and If-they-will-they-may-talking... In fact, there's only one answer which pushes aside the question and drives around the point. Thanks Mr Higgins!
I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Well, he sounds like a really nice guy. It's unfortunate that the game has received poor reviews, mostly. I haven't played the game, some reviews I read turned me off. But I know I'll at least rent it along the way. Sequels are always welcome when they improve. Thumbs up for the online mode, though.

I would love to see them make another NBA Courtside for the Wii. I thought it was pretty good on the Gamecube.
