Planet Moon Studios are bringing a unique take on the music simulation genre to the Wii in Band Mashups.
2008 seems to be a music-filled year for the gaming world, and the studio recently gave IGN a hands-on with their latest project: a unique way of playing music on your Wii.
At heart Band Mashups does what all rhythm games do: allow players to follow along pieces of music with their remotes, but with an added twist: the 30 license d tracks have been performed in five different ways: rock, funk/hip-hop, country, latin and by a marching band with over 150 tracks to choose from.
Song choices include: The Gorillaz "Feel Good Inc.,"Tag Team's "Whoomp! There It Is," Tenacious D's "Master Exploder." along with "Blitzkrieg Bop" from The Ramones, "Brick House" from The Commodores, and "That's The Way (I Like It)" from KC and the Sunshine Band.
With that in mind, players take part in a battle-of-the-genres, with what's described as a "tug-of-war, using the Wii Remote to make that happen". The Wii remote is used as a motion baton, from left to right, stab etc, as beats go from bottom upwards. Whilst trying to keep in time and feel the music, players must attack or defend with projectiles from their opponent.
Band Mashups hits stores in April 2008.

Considering the success of Guitar Hero on Wii, this doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Great news, though, for fans of the genre...

It does seem alright, could it end up still being a little too similar to GH though?

Cool I guess. I'll definitely rent it but I'll stick with Rock Band and Guitar Hero for my music gaming goodness.

is spinning plates.

I like rhythm games, so I'll probably give it a try.
