Update 2 - 22/02/2008: Cam footage from GDC reveals a stunning look at the game in action!

Update 1 - 20/02/2008: Alongside news of the game's European release, we have nabbed a stagerring 178 new screens from the Japanese version of the game. Be sure to check out the screens below and in the Mario Kart gallery.

Mario Kart Wii is set to skid into Europe sooner than expected thanks to Nintendo Europe, with the title due in just over a month's time!

"Make sure you put your foot down and go go go, as the next installment in the iconic Mario Kart series; Mario Kart Wii is just around the corner and zooming towards its launch across Europe on April 11th 2008.

"Mario Kart Wii comes bundled with a new and intuitive accessory - the Wii Wheel, which makes it one of the most accessible Mario Kart games to date and allows complete novices to compete with ease and comfort, ensuring no one is left in the dust. For those more familiar to Mario Kart and who are now afraid of getting smoked by their newcomer grandparents using the Wii Wheel, rest assured, Nintendo has you covered! Mario Kart Wii supports five different control options: Wii Wheel, Wii Remote turned on its side, Wii Remote and Nunchuk combination, Classic Controller and even Nintendo GameCube controller. So there's bound to be a configuration that fits everyone's experience, level and style.

"Combining all the much-loved features from the series, Mario Kart Wii also sees a whole host of stunning new tracks, characters, weapons and vehicles. Those however looking for world ranking domination can take on up to 11 players simultaneously worldwide using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service which will offer them the chance to race other players across the globe in a nail-biting contest of speed and skill! Prefer to keep the rivalry a little closer to home? Try the Multiplayer Mode, in which up to four people will be able to challenge each other in the comfort of
their own living room, bringing the on screen excitement into a whole new dimension.

"Mario Kart Wii is an eagerly anticipated launch for Europe and we are confident that all those who have enjoyed playing previous Mario Kart games, in particular the Nintendo DS version will be pleased and looking forward to its arrival. Mario Kart Wii encompasses the core spirit of Mario Kart: an incredibly rich and deep gameplay experience that provides never ending fun. And with the Wii Wheel, every member of the whole family will feel comfortable to join in and experience kart racing regardless of whether they are a karting champion or a complete new beginner. With the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service also allowing friends and family to compete around the globe, we are confident that Mario Kart fans won't be left disappointed with this installment exclusively on Wii."
- Laurent Fischer, Managing Director of Marketing & PR of Nintendo of Europe.

Mario and all his much loved pals are planning to make a spectacular return in this definitive version of Mario Kart, providing the most action-packed, adrenaline-filled racing fun ever seen in the series. Players will have to master a
host of 16 exciting new tracks in addition to 16 classic tracks from previous Mario Kart games. For the first time ever players will have the option of racing with karts or a brand new mode of transport

Fuck. That's my Media Studies coursework deadline...

And it's unlikely Brawl will come out at the same time...

No Brawl until May at least. Smilie

Wow, very little has been heard about this game and now it's to release in the UK April 11th? That's interesting for such a high porfile game. Good news though!

:O That's awesome news! I wasn't expecting it to be released that early. Only 4 days before my birthday as well, would make a good present. Smilie

Can't wait for this now.

(Written with my Wii)

Could be one of the best Nintendo WiFi titles, I think that's the game's main good point.

I sure hope it's not as easy for noobs to win (i.e. items + no skill) as in MKDS.

well the fact there has been no news about a game that is coming out so soon is not a good thing. Double dash was fun but it definitely seemed lacking compared to the DS version for example.

I really just want brawl =(

Mario Kart Wii hasn't exactly been out of the limelight, its just been Brawl hogging all of it.

I'm looking forward to this, and even the Motorbikes idea has grown on me. Smilie

Bloody hell that was speedy. Good news methinks.

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

That's some very good news, i wasn't expecting it till September/October. Perfect day to come out too, i'll be coming back from uni, yay!

Brawl Code 4983-6387-2983
Diamond Code 0387 8628 7636

I seem to remember someone saying previously that Mario Kart would come out first in Europe and Smash Bros would come out first in the US.

Yayz!Smilie, even sooner that that other April date! Smilie

I have kept saying that it would come out first. There was a story that was posted up on a German Nintendo site that was soon taken down after a senior German exec let it slip.

Much earlier than I expected, bout time we see some unexpected (and good!) release dates. Too bad I'm not too hyped on this game yet, Brawl all the way.

Chat... as in voice?

12 Player sounds great, and it looks like it will be easier to play with friends now.

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

Hmm, i just hope this game hasnt been rushed...seems like they havnt hyped up the game enough.

Is the game being released in Europe first or worldwide?

I do like Nintendo's option to include multi controller compatibility considering ive got 4 offical cube controllers, 2 wiimotes and one classic controller means that i can play 4 multiplayer by only having 2 Wiimotes. Same with Brawl! Woohoo!

Just upped 178 new screens Smilie

Nice, looking pretty good, hopefully will play just as well.

I hope so, that would be icing on the cake for online play.

It's looking amazing! definetly looks better than Double Dash. I'm loving the Mario Circuit and Sherbet Island revamps from MK64, they look gorgeous. Smilie

Can't wait for this, I'm more hyped up about it than Brawl now. Smilie

id take mario kart over brawl any day of the week

april 11th cant come soon enough Smilie

Well, that's good news (I don't live in the UK, but still, good news), let's hope NOE doesn't delay it.

i don't think so but you never know what nintendo might pull out of it's big red mario shaped hat!
was still hoping for brawl though but that seems a long way off. new characters? i wonder who they are any ideas?

There won't be voice chat... I really doubt it... we havn't heard about anything of the sort yet.

Also, all of those screenshots are there twice, so there aren't actually 178, there are about half of that.

Why is there already a reader score?

-Have you any idea what it's like to be a Fembot living in a Manbot's Manputer's world?
-What?

Wow, looking at the kart designs in these pictures, they are awesome. It would be so cool if there was a "Garage Mode" were you could design your own karts or bikes and paint them and race them in the game. Maybe you could collect and trade parts with other players you win and unlock in the game and you could customize your ride to your hearts content... That would make this game perfect to me.
