By Adam Riley 22.02.2008 50

Update 2 - 22/02/2008: Cam footage from GDC reveals a stunning look at the game in action!

Update 1 - 20/02/2008: Alongside news of the game's European release, we have nabbed a stagerring 178 new screens from the Japanese version of the game. Be sure to check out the screens below and in the Mario Kart gallery.

Mario Kart Wii is set to skid into Europe sooner than expected thanks to Nintendo Europe, with the title due in just over a month's time!

"Make sure you put your foot down and go go go, as the next installment in the iconic Mario Kart series; Mario Kart Wii is just around the corner and zooming towards its launch across Europe on April 11th 2008.

"Mario Kart Wii comes bundled with a new and intuitive accessory - the Wii Wheel, which makes it one of the most accessible Mario Kart games to date and allows complete novices to compete with ease and comfort, ensuring no one is left in the dust. For those more familiar to Mario Kart and who are now afraid of getting smoked by their newcomer grandparents using the Wii Wheel, rest assured, Nintendo has you covered! Mario Kart Wii supports five different control options: Wii Wheel, Wii Remote turned on its side, Wii Remote and Nunchuk combination, Classic Controller and even Nintendo GameCube controller. So there's bound to be a configuration that fits everyone's experience, level and style.

"Combining all the much-loved features from the series, Mario Kart Wii also sees a whole host of stunning new tracks, characters, weapons and vehicles. Those however looking for world ranking domination can take on up to 11 players simultaneously worldwide using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service which will offer them the chance to race other players across the globe in a nail-biting contest of speed and skill! Prefer to keep the rivalry a little closer to home? Try the Multiplayer Mode, in which up to four people will be able to challenge each other in the comfort of
their own living room, bringing the on screen excitement into a whole new dimension.

"Mario Kart Wii is an eagerly anticipated launch for Europe and we are confident that all those who have enjoyed playing previous Mario Kart games, in particular the Nintendo DS version will be pleased and looking forward to its arrival. Mario Kart Wii encompasses the core spirit of Mario Kart: an incredibly rich and deep gameplay experience that provides never ending fun. And with the Wii Wheel, every member of the whole family will feel comfortable to join in and experience kart racing regardless of whether they are a karting champion or a complete new beginner. With the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service also allowing friends and family to compete around the globe, we are confident that Mario Kart fans won't be left disappointed with this installment exclusively on Wii."
- Laurent Fischer, Managing Director of Marketing & PR of Nintendo of Europe.

Mario and all his much loved pals are planning to make a spectacular return in this definitive version of Mario Kart, providing the most action-packed, adrenaline-filled racing fun ever seen in the series. Players will have to master a
host of 16 exciting new tracks in addition to 16 classic tracks from previous Mario Kart games. For the first time ever players will have the option of racing with karts or a brand new mode of transport

Woah shit! I've been expecting this to get delayed to the holidays! That's so fucking near! Smilie

And Wii Fit is also coming out around that time as well as Grand Theft Auto IV. Ninja Gaiden DS is coming around March. This is going to be a mind blowing year. We should be in a drought at the moment. Freaking A!

Finally we get summin decent (soory Strikers) before Americans! But I wud prefer Brawl...

My pictures wont appear so heres a smiley

Garage mode would be cool, but most likely confirmed by now if it was in. Excellent thought though

Wow, that is a pretty early release date. Hopefully one for the US will follow soon enough.

Also, nice one on the screens Jb, must have taken a good while!

Yes, I love Mario Kart. I nearly shat my pants when Reggie mentioned it at E3.

I am a Mario Kart god!!!

(If there were voice chat, all you would hear is little 7-10 year old kids talking to each other in their high pitched voices. Real players concentrate on the race. It should be private voice chat.)

Yeah, great vid. Kinda annoying though how much Nintendo are focusing on the Wii Wheel. I'l probably end up using the GC Pad anyway. Smilie

You n'me both! I'll definitely try out the bundled wheel, but will probably end up using the GC or may invest in a classic controller for Brawl too. Classic controllers are going pretty cheap at 12/Gamestation.

from the looks of the video you do have to hold down button 1 or 2 to accelerate, which is really bad because holding your thumb across the control while holding it in a steering wheel like that really hurts =( Guess I will have to just use the controller without the plastic attachment!

the music in the trailer sounds like its from phantasy star onlineSmilie

It's looking very nice, certainly better than I was expecting. The stunts look out of place though...not sure what they are for unless I've missed something.

Wow, looks pretty fast! Smilie Definately faster than previous Mario Karts, that's good news.

Me likes the SNES Mario Circuit music. Smilie

They really are going to try to get everyone playing this one on the evidence of that Ad.

Seeing the whole family with those Wii Wheels just made me laugh.

can't wait for this game to come out...

Wow, looking at the kart designs in these pictures, they are awesome. It would be so cool if there was a "Garage Mode" were you could design your own karts or bikes and paint them and race them in the game. Maybe you could collect and trade parts with other players you win and unlock in the game and you could customize your ride to your hearts content... That would make this game perfect to me.

Buy a game called Need for Speed from the Underground games to the present...they are perfect for this.

I love the music for the video! Retro!

Ugh... I physically couldn't enjoy that trailer. The emphasis on those awful wheels made me puke. Smilie

They look SO STUPID. USE THE WIIMOTE IN THE WAY IT WAS DESIGNED TO BE USED[/anger]

Agreed.

I will also most likely use the GC controller. It just looks more natural than what all of the other controll schemes are. I don't want to play Mario Kart like I played Exite Truck. I loath that game.Smilie

Man excite truck was so tricky to control initially but I got the hang of it eventually, probably need way more time with it. My bro totally pwns me when I come over to my mum's.

Will probably get used to the Wii steering wheel but most likely will use the Gamecube controller or classic controller.

Everyone had a wheel, they must've each bought a copy of MK.
I can't wait, I am a genius a Mario Kart. Gamecube controller online just to be safe, but I am seriously dreading when you get into a serious 12 player match and there's always that loser who disconnects. Then the match suddenly ends before you start getting into the race.

Say no to disconnectors.

I never thought about that.

Nintendo will most likely put some sort of system in to prevent lag when someone disconnects.Smilie

How about, for example you're playing 1-on-1 and you're winning. The person then disconnects, and instead of the match ending, you by yourself finish the match/race and proceed to get your points and up you rank moved up.

Disconnectors are the reason I don't play DS online anymore.
