THQ Announce Wii-exclusive Beach Sports Sim

By Jorge Ba-oh 21.02.2008 8

THQ have announced a Wii-exclusive sports sim where players complete in popular games but with a twist: all taking place on the beach.

Players are whisked away to a seaside resort and up to four can compete in various sports - including the expected volleyball, but also American football, bocce, disc golf and cricket.

"Big Beach Sports drops players into a seaside resort setting with a wide variety of compelling outdoor sports to play and master. Sports including bocce, cricket and disc golf are making their Wii debuts and combined with the inclusion of more traditional games like soccer, American football and volleyball, Big Beach Sports will be an appealing title for the growing audience of Wii gamers."

Randy Shoemaker, director, global brand management, THQ.

Big Beach Sports aims to make good use of Wii remotes in the various games available to players and is due to hit stores alongside the beach-goers this summer.

Ooooh, nice to see another exclusive heading to Wii - hopefully won't be a mere Wii sports clone though.

Bocce? Disc golf? I don't even know what they are! Smilie

Need Beach Spikers sequel.

Hmm, if they're well done and easy for casual players, I could see this being quite a bit of fun...at least for those of us that have non-gamer relatives and friends that enjoy an occasional bit of Wii fun.

Bocce is a game played with balls. I'm not sure of the exact rules but from what I've seen the aim is similar to shuffleboard or Curling (you want your ball to be closest to the target). I think it's Italian in origin.

Disc golf is also known as frisbee golf (but Disc golf is the name preferred by people that actually play it). Basically, it's golf played using small flying discs. Much cheaper than real golf, with most courses being set up in parks (no dedicated land use, and the state of the grass is unimportant). And this wouldn't really be the Wii's debut for this...there was a mini-game of Disc Golf on Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (although that version was pretty horrid...as with many of the mini-games I've tried on that disc, it was way too hard to control, and the results never seemed to be what I was intending).

You can probably look up either of them in Wikipedia if you want to know more.

I hope all the female characters have lots of er..."bounce"

Sounds like a typically EA type of game, really. If they advertise it well, and actually get it out for summer - no delays - then I reckon it'll sell rather well. Also, ZS, go and sit in the corner.Smilie
