Mario Kart Wii Receives No Text Chat (Update)

By Jorge Ba-oh 28.02.2008 38

Update: According to CVG. we won't be receiving text chat. According to Nintendo of America, the European division was telling a few lies and apparently only predetermined phrases can be used, no lobbies or chat rooms.

Who's the weakest link?

Original Story -

With Mario Kart power sliding its way to stores in just over a month's time, it's been revealed that gamers will be able to chat online...using text.

According to Kotaku, players will be able to create chat-rooms for friends (who have been added by friend codes presumably) and most likely use USB keyboards to type away.

Will voice chat eventually turn up with Nintendo's upcoming Pay and Play service? Hopefully.

Nintendo once again keep up their reputation as gaming innovators. Smilie

Better than nothing I suppose.

Hopefully I'll actually manage to get my Keyboard working with the Wii again. That really annoys me, it hasn't worked in ages.

My thoughts exactly.

Now why doesn't Brawl have this basic online component...

Ha, lame. Seriously, who's going to use this?

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

A very good move, this will encourage some community that the Wii needs. It should be great for arranging events with friends.

I really cannot wait now, especially with the lame news about Brawl of late. Mario Kart Wii is going to be awesome fun.

Metroid Hunters, a game from 2006 on the DS has Nintendo's premier titles Mario Kart Wii outdone in the communication department. Its just so hilariously pathetic.

I knew it was probably too late to have it in Brawl, but I really expected Mario Kart to have voice chat.

Its not a technical issue, its almost certainly a philopshy one.
Metroid Hunters is a marginaly higher rated game then Mario Kart will be, so that probably makes a difference.
(eg, 13 year olds can hear swearing, but 7 year olds cant, or something)

Nice way to put it Flame.

Still think this is much better than having nothing at all. I still think that VOIP will be subject to the Pay and Play at least Nintendo have a get out when someone sues them for something said over it.

Decent enough I guess, although if the chatting is only possible with friends, I would much like to have voice chatting with friends too.

Probably a pricing/agreement issue, as its free they don't want creeps coming along and people/mothers sending in complaints.

Guessing once the pay to play scheme kicks in then it'll be more likely to have voice chat and more things for big-kids.

well i guess that makes mario kart one step up on the communication ladder than brawl even if voice chat would have been preferable
oh well, beggars cant be choosers

This is phil. If your conciousness must absolutely intrude upon mine, leave a message.

Um...what's the point? Won't you want to be racing, not typing? Smilie

you do have a point there

I assume this is for before/after races.

Why can't they just put a parental lock on it and have a warning with the game manual and when you change the settings: "Using the voice chat function will allow the player to contact anyone playing the game online. If you do not wish to contact or be contacted by strangers do not use this function"

Or something along those lines. Surely it's not difficult to have voice chat just for those that want it? Then search by 'just voice chat' or everyone.

Some times I think we should be working at Nintendo.

ha just because they might employ you doesn't mean you'd get listen to you'd start right at the bottom kissing their asses until you made them some decent money

If only Nintendo let us communicate DURING game play. Better than preset messages I suppose.

I only mean if we were there in the company now. Us gamers know what we want in games. I'm not serious about it - it was a joke.

This is all Iwatas fault. All they needed to do was release a fucking blu tooth mic peripheral and then let develpers use it.
POKEMON for fuck sake had voice chat POKEMON!!!, it has nothing to do with content of the game or who it's aimed at.
I mean your chatting with your friends, they wouldn't be your friends if you thought they were going to molest you. It's just plain bizzare.
Whats the diffrence between text and voice at the end of the day your communicating does voice chat contain better molesting abilities or somthing!?

CUNTS CUNT WANKER CUNTS! IWATA YOU BIG FANNY WANKER! CUNT! WANKER!

XBL Gamertag: James2t3

I say we go into Iwata's base and kill his d00dz.

Nintendo's surround sound voice chat must be REALLY HARD to make.

To be honest though, it IS better than nothing. As long as my keyboard works well with it. I prefer typing to talking anyway Smilie (Quiet kid by day, post whore by night)

I don't need to talk in Mario Kart so I really could care less. It would be fun to talk trash using voice chat but eh whatever.

Uh oh...spaghetti ohes...

Apparently Nintendo of Europe cocked up. No text chat either, just predetermined phrases. Rejoice!...not.
