New Sonic Unleashed Concept Details

By Jorge Ba-oh 09.04.2008 19

The latest edition of Official Nintendo Magazine details the upcoming multi-platform Sonic outing: Unleashed.

  • Originally penned to be Sonic Adventure 3
  • Has no/little relation to previous 3D sonics, including 2006 and Secret Rings
  • The power of the 7 Chaos Emeralds are misused by Eggman and something changes inside Sonic's body.
  • Sonic heads around the world, with various different realistic locations.
  • No direct mechanics from Wii's Sonic Rings, but uses a move known as "quick step" to allow for fast movement left or right.
  • Sonic Boost allows for a quick boost in speed (much like in Secret Rings) by collecting rings throughout the course, as well as a Sonic Dash move.
  • Sonic's classic moves like spin and homing attacks make a return.
  • The game turns from day to night at times, day seeing Sonic in his usual form and at night players will slow down and manipulate objects...
  • In Unleashed players will also use the Nunchuck in some form (presumably for analogue movement)
  • New robot creatures developed by eggman, some darker elements and some colossal beasts (one would be about 7m tall)
  • Developed from scratch to be a completely new take on Sonic.
  • Interview with lead game designer Yoshihisa Hashimoto.
  • Sonic Unleashed is due for release later this year.

The Official Nintendo magazine hits stores on April 11th. Thanks to C3's Marzy for the tip.

    Nice one Marz, ty ^^

Anyway, all those things have been said before. Interesting about no relation to older Sonics though. I sure hope Shadow & Silver are missing, and that the cast is made up of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy & Eggman.

Oh yeah, and apparantly the version shown in ONM is the 360 version Smilie That's NO good.

    No problem Smilie

Yer, they definitely look like 360 shots, but there very vague about the whole thing and just say the visuals look lovely. :-?

Sounds ace, hopefully we'll get some decent controls/visuals on Wii!

Yeah, which is what I don't get. If they knew the screens were from the 360 version, why would they lie like that? And if they didn't know or mention what the screens were from, then why the hell not?

Later I'll have to do a bit more research to see if they're just lying about the graphics or not.

the wii can do those visuals though, just no devloper pushes the wii, all we end up getting are ps2 games put onto the wii, which pisses me off.

I really don't think the Wii can do those visuals Smilie

I think the backgrounds are pretty detailed, but the foreground elements look pretty regular/basic - I think the Wii can pretty much push quite a lot of what we've seen already IMO.

Nice optimism JB. I really don't think this game has graphics that'll push the Wii's GPU to the metal. But they would have to make some visual sacrifices.

The power of the 7 Chaos Emeralds are misused by Eggman and something changes inside Sonic's body.

    Sonic The Transexual

Yeah, I got the mag today and the graphics do look quite nice. Hopefully the Wii version won't lack anything compared to the 360/PS3 versions (obviously not including graphics).

Well it's doubtful the Wii version will have dlc, but it's very possible the 360 one will at least have themes & gamer pictures, if not actual dlc (I mean even Sonic The Craphog did)

Aye - should be fairly complete imo. Hopefully Sega will introduce some solid online mechanics and ideas. Would love a 2 player Online versus like in Sonic Rush Adventure.

Too f***'n right. Damn lazy ass devs. Smilie

    Chance favors the prepared mind.

Kinda funny list, self-contradicting in many places.

I think this game could be good though.

Incidently, the Wii can do those graphics easily...all the lighting is burnt-in.

I think that it is good that it doesn't have any realation to the other games. It should be a brand new story. If it was going to be sonic adventure 3 then why not just call it sonic adventure 3? Smilie

Newsflash: Every 3D Sonic game ever made since SA2 had a "penned" name of Sonic Adventure 3, or was called so at some point.

    - Apparantly, Sonic Adventure 3 became Heroes.
    - Shadow The Hedgehog was first thought of as Sonic Adventure 3 (before it was fully revealed) and then went on to be known by many as Sonic Adventure 2.5
    - Sonic The Craphog was also known as Sonic Adventure 3 at times, and it's similarity (but inferiority) to Sonic Adventure 1 makes it a bit more obvious.

It's just a silly way of trying to get people hyped for it.

I wouldn't mind Shadow (in case that's not obvious), but Silver can go. I mean, he's a little cool, but three superfast hedgehogs is far too much.

Although what I would like too see is a game that incoprorates Sonic's old friends (the ones from the comic and the original TV show). That would get rid of ShadowSmilie , Amy Smilie , Silver Smilie , Cream Smilie , Blaze Smilie , Big Smilie , and any other new characters (not the Team Chaotix guys, they're originals.) It would Also bring back Fang, and incorporate Turbo Tails and Hyper Knuckles. Of course, that's not going to be this Game, but one like that in the near future would be sweet.
