New DS Model Coming at E3?

By Jorge Ba-oh 12.04.2008 29

Reports from Famitsu have suggested the possibility of a new iteration of thr DS appearing at E3 2008.

The president of the magazine's parent company Enterbrain, Hirokazu Hamamura, has hinted on a chance that Nintendo may just be revealing new hardware during E3 2008 in July.

According to CVG, Nintendo spokesperson Hiroshi Yasushi didn't deny the rumour, telling Famitsu the company were unable to comment at this time. Could an even smaller DS be on the way? Or a completely new portable?

E3 2008 will be taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from July 15th to 17th 2008.

Not too unlikely - DS sales have certainly begun to decline, especially in Japan, but that's purely down to saturation. Interesting to see whether Nintendo can reboot the juggernaught in a way Sony couldn't with PS2.

Well...I can't imagine how they could improve on the Lite...and it has been out for several years now...it wouldn't surprise me if a brand new console was unveiled. Smilie Still, the DS is still going strong, so they may well want to keep milking it as long as possible. Although, if they announced it now, it still wouldn't be out for another year and a half maybe...so the timing would be right...
Smilie Man, I can't wait to see what they come up with next. XD

Well I was going to get myself a DS Lite relatively soon. Looks like I'll have to wait and see what this announcement is.

Hmm...maybe they're finally going down the multimedia route?

It's the only thing I can think of really. I doubt it's a new console, the DS is still going pretty well really they only to announce a new console if Sony do or if the DS trails off.

Oh, and I would love them to add the ability to play GBC and old GB games on the DS, and a link-cable port, but I think that's a long shot.

Cool!
Read this at Gamespot and some users threw rocks at the editor that posted it xD
But since the rumor is going around many sites, I don\'t see any reason not wait a little to see what might happen Smilie

How could they improve on the DS model wise? I think the DS is a sleek machine.

Rather see more 1st party games being made.

I'm not surprised DS sales have declined, since everyone now has one.

DS is still worldwide the best saleing console.
So.
Nope, no absolutely not.

A new colour, at the very most a new model.

But a new system base? no.

Remember folks, the GBA was delayed almost a year because the GBC was doing so well.

The DS is still doing *insanely* well.
And with more to come; The DS\'s Wii channel, and the company releasing the comic-book downloading software amongst others.

A lot of the DS\'s online potential is still unused.
If storage is needed, writable cards are possible without remodeling.

Nintendo might, of course, mentioning another system in development if pushed.
But then, they *-always-* have other systems in development.

Gameboy Smilie, well one can hope.

It doesn't need to be any smaller, any smaller and the screens will suck and it will be uncomfortable to hold. I dont think it will be a new handheld either as the massive success of the DS is still very strong with a massive userbase, doesn't make sense. Its probably some add on, i hope its something like a new battery with 48hours continuous maximum light play...keep dreaming.

Probably just another face lift, I could name a few things I would change on the Lite. Smilie

I already thought they would come out with a new portable, If it is somthing it will be somthing completely new. They wont make another dam DS

Yea i'd rather hedge my bets on a GBA2 to be honest, the DS was meant to be a stop gap for the GB franchise.

I think rather than the innovative stage that the DS/Wii has set i think Nintendo are going to offer a more multimedia based piece of hardware that will be capable of playing some VC games from your Wii. Have a fully interactive web-browser. With an internal hard-drive and possible telephone/messaging function.

Nintendo have been following Apple with their design and functions so i can see an N-store (iTunes) being set up to buy Nintendo wallpapers, ring tones, music tracks and games to work on the handheld. It won't have DS combatibility as the platform is different but they could put GBA port on it but may not to save space and money. The machine may have a tilt sensor in it (such as Kirby tilt and tumble style) to implement some sort of innovation.

The game will have a huge online user base to rival microsoft's market share in this field. The machine will most likey have a USB port for functionality and an SD card.

Well thats what i think...but is that just a PSP with a Nintendo label on it??

Perhaps a DS Micro? It wouldn't be too hard to make it any smaller if you took out the GBA slot. I don't think the DS has slowed down enough to the point where they will be revealing a next gen handheld.

I think it could go either of two ways:

They follow the games route and support full GameBoy backwards compatibility and Wii VC games. Perhaps make it even slimmer.

Or, they go multimedia and go bare minumum games-wise by taki out the GBA slot to make room for built in browser, music player and any other multimedia type stuff.

Nah, the Gamboy franchise is pretty much done for now. It would go against Nintendo's current Mom and Pop philosophy entirely to make a Nintendo Gameboy PSP.

If there's a new model, I'd say its a "DS Micro" of sorts.

What I'd like to see is the GBA slot of the DS put to use. Perhaps with an add-on that added Wii-channel like functionality with support for "Virtual Game Boy".

I agree. Also, don't you guys think that Game Boy is associated with old/retro gaming now?

Its true that it would go against Nintendo's policy of innovating the market and fresh thinking so to speak.

To be honest though i do think that its time to move on! I mean the DS has had a life of what 4 years now? By the time this new gizmo gets to next E3 it will be 5 years and then by the time its on the market 5.5-6 years. It makes sense to me to be a new product.

Im not saying it wont be a DS-Micro, because i know Nintendo like to revise their models but really...perhaps you are forgetting how long the DS has been out. What else can you really do with a touch screen? Dont say loads because its getting to the point of same old shit anyway.

On the other hand i can't afford a new console altogether especially with all the money invested in the DS.

Hmmmm

meby just a ds lite water proof up to 50m?

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Maybe bring back the Game Boy franchise would be cool, although except this time not a remake of an older version, like GB Micro.

Yup, that's what I think. It may be too early for a new console to be released NOW, but if it's only just gonna be announced, by the time it's released, it'll be around the right time.

Personally I'm hoping for it to be a brand new console; perhaps with DS/GBA/GBC compatability, greatly increased graphics and resolution and perhaps some motions sensitivity in there. More of a 'DS 2' than a new GameBoy. Nice harddrive/SD slot for multimedia functionality would be great, plus a VC Console style game download service for GB games. Smilie

The DSL is great as it is. All I could think of is maybe some extra functions such as some multi media options. Or a new color, but that doesn't count, does it?

If this was another remodel of the DS, I doubt they'll take out the GBA slot. Games like Guitar Hero needs it and add ons like rumble also require the slot.

If anything, the "blueprints" that were leaked showing tilt-sensing on a portable could have been a hint as to what this "new hardware" may be.

If it's another look for the DS, I'm hoping for something like a sliding function to protect the touch screen, while at the same time keeping the top screen in plain view so one could perhaps play a GBA game.

Another factor is the average console lifespan of 5 years. The DS was released in '04, so this just might be the E3 where the big N decide to unveil DS2, or the next Gameboy.

Then again this could also be a new version of the Wii with DVD playback, a smaller size, and a new name: Wii Wee Smilie

I don't post much, but I will appreciate any feedback on the posts I do make. Feel free to PM

Thats a good point maybe a new model HD-HDD-DVD Wii!
