In any case I've always had the impression he was one of the richest men in Japan.
Shame he stepped down. Nintendo had always ran in his family, and Iwata is ruining it! ... Well not ruining... he's making a lot of money. But it's just not the same.

LinkyshinksWow, that's a whole lot of money. I suppose this is expected given his share holding.

noneIwata saved Nintendo.
Before Iwata - purple gamecube's, luigi's mansion launch title and the like.
After Iwata - DS, Wii, Platinum gamecube's becoming the one they tried to 'sell' to consumers. Iwata gets the games business, Yamauchi was too set in his ways. He couldn't have done what Iwata did today - it takes a real pioneer and a man with foresight to take us in the direction he has.
LONG LIVE IWATA!

Yeah, it's not the same - it's better. Despite taking Nintendo to high places in the 90s, he was behind and really didn't do much for the GameCube's image and life. Yes, it wasn't all him pulling the strings but he still had the final say in a lot of decisions that would have done well for Nintendo in the past, but screwed them over in the 2000s.
If we still had Yamauchi in the king's throne then we probably wouldn't see as much success in the Wii and DS.

noneIf this bloke was still in power, the Wii would likely out spec PS3.
If the 360 and sell shitloads at said high price, then so could a fully loaded Wii.( Edited 08.05.2008 16:37 by Fenton )

WiillThis was the guy responsible for the Gamecube and the worsening of Nintendo's financial situation, who also said that players didn't want online and who has been quoted as saying he's never played a video game in his life (it is also thought he only went into videogaming because the love hotel business wasn't as profitable as he thought it would be).
This is the guy, who has done nothing whatsoever to aid Nintendo's success, that reaps the most benefits. It can be pretty depressing how the world works, sometimes.( Edited 08.05.2008 17:43 by Wiill )

D_prOdigyHe was a f*****g legend. You'd never get a Nintendo member firing such shots of fire at opposing companies (and at the time of the Yamauchi vs Square incident, Square could offer absolutely nothing to Nintendo). People say he's doe nothing to aid Nintendo's success? dude, without him, you wouldn't have frikin heard of Nintendo.

Exactly. GameCube is my favourite console. I don't give a shit if it's purple, they also released an awesome black & orange GC alongside the purple one, the black one soon became the "main" colour anyway.
The DS/Wii wouldn't have been as successful if not for Iwata, but I don't care about their success. I want them to concentrate on making great consoles that won't be the laughing stock of any serious hardcore gamer. The Wii is home to PS2 ports and some great Nintendo titles. If Nintendo weren't so sure they could go with last gen hardware with new technology and make money out of it, we wouldn't be getting PS2 ports and missing out on huge multiplatform titles
I don't wanna start a casual gamer debate again. This is just how I feel about what Iwata's done to a hardcore gaming company. He's turned it into a mass audience money maker.

noneI would say they both have their strong points. If it weren't for Hiroshi, Nintendo would not be around today, because it was Hiroshi who made perhaps the most important hire in the gaming industry- Shigeru Miyamoto.
His time has passed, and now that Iwata is in charge, we are seeing things like the DS and the Wii, and another huge surge in Nintendo popularity.
They are both important men when it comes to Nintendo, and hopefully their success continues to equate to better products for us, the gamer.( Edited 09.05.2008 07:42 by TruLink )
