GTA Shoots Down Mario Kart in Europe

Rockstar's recently release of GTA IV sees the game take prime position over Mario Kart in Europe.

The latest installment sits firmly in pole position across all European countries this week, from Germany to Sweden, Denmark to Ireland. The general trend also sees Wii Fit, Wii Play and Nintendo's beloved Mario Kart follow closely behind in the top five.

Surprisingly the American-based trivia and mini-game fest, Game Party, still sneaks into the charts in the UK, for whatever sick and twisted reason.

UK Top 10
01. (__) Grand Theft Auto IV (360)
02. (__) Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3)
03. (01) Wii Fit (Wii)
04. (10) Wii Play (Wii)
05. (02) Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
06. (03) Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)
07. (04) Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (PS3)
08. (05) Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training (NDS)
09. (07) Game Party (Wii)
10. (16) Wii Play (Wii)

I believe it's known as software, a generic term.

We think it matters because it's part of Nintendo's primary driving force into changing gaming into something we, the veteran gamers, cannot recognize or enjoy. It'd be harmless if it was just some random game isolated by itself in some niche little island genre. It's not though, and that's what we dislike. It's a frightening sign of the times, or at least that's how we see it.

Again, I mostly agree. I can recognise and possibly enjoy it, but it's definitely not what I want, and I don't want Nintendo's usually amazing talent put into something so... simple. Sure the technology is probably good, but ANYONE can do that. The game's industry, especially the Wii, needs Nintendo games at the moment, because they're excellent, but hardcore Nintendo games have been increasingly rare since the Wii/DS days began.

I wouldn't say the DS has any problems with software, yeah lot of shit on it but it has enough "hardcore" games coming out and currently available stuff.

Wii still needs to better balance it's hardcore and casual library.

Unfortunately it's 'hardcore' library is pretty rubbish quality. I think it just needs some better games. Some great games at all that don't feature fluffy Nintendo characters would be a good start.

Handheld consoles generally don't attract "AMAZING! Smilie" games like home consoles do. The DS has some (quite frankly) excellent titles, but there is still not something for everyone.

If you like Pokémon, then Diamond and Pearl are excellent. Sonic Rush is the best Sonic series in yonks, and Ace Attorney is more epic than all of your favourite novels combined, and if you don't like novels then it's still better than most games you like ;D

DS still needs an Uberkiller. That's easier said than done on a handheld console.

I think you guys exaggerate way too much. Sure nintendo's introducing a new genre of games, but what's wrong with that? I still get my amazing: Zelda, Mario, Metroid, SSB, etc. It's not like Nintendo is like, "yeah flet's get casual and fuck the gamers that have been ollowing us for more than 20 yrs".

Have you ever thought what types of great games could use this? S-E said that want to integrate this to one of their titles, then there's sports titles that could use this as well. Nintendo in my eyes are just making the boring get fun.

They never left us in the dark, we have left them last generation. they're trying to make this to get some money, and where does the money go from there? to the expensive games. Because it's proven if all they make is hardcore games their system won't sell, they won't have money, and thats bad business.

Btw, who said that their talented team, the ones that work on zelda etc work on this? They're not wasting talent, seems more like they're giving opportunities to different things, that's why i support their ideas like this, cause otherwise i would still find skateboarding games boring and would puke thinking about golf games, today i'm actually excited for an online golf game like Mario golf.

I just reckon you guys against it should really think what is really happening instead of thinking you were abbandoned. Smilie

Problem is that games like Standing on that white thing and moving your leg seems to get people to spend money and put it in Nintendo's pocket.

Jeez, its not really Nintendo's fault. Oni/Knighty, if you could tell someone to Jog on the spot or hula hoop with out a hoop and get paid to do it then fuck, why wouldnt you do it!

I do hate these new games, i do want to try Wii fit though, i was skeptical about Brain Training and Wii Sports when they were first out but quite frankly they have been quite enjoyable games.

Indeed though, i really crave Smash bros and not Wii fucking fit! Let alone all the development time that could have gone into making the next DK/F-zero or Starfox!

GTA IV is pooey...same ole same ole now.

Let me state this for the record, has any previous nintendo console had so many hardcore games in 1 & 1/2 yrs? Didn't think so. Some people complain so much, oh Casuals bl bla bla, far out shut up! When you have SMG, MP3, LoZ:TP, RE4, Re:UC, E.T., MS, MKWii, EO, FE, NMH, BW, SPM, MP8, MoH:H2... to name a few hardcore games, so really, how many consoles have this many awesome games in 1 yr and a couple of months? Oh, i forgot to include SSBB!

So really, all this complaining and whining is just so annoying, far out, and these titles are so diverse, specially with FF and DQ coming out soon for us to get some RPG action.

So now i ask, where is the problem? Nintendo have made: Wii Sports, Wiiplay, BBA, Wiifit and erm... thats it for casuals! Please tell me how are they investing more on casuals and forgetting the hardcore when they have so many big awesome titles and 4 f*$#ing casual games??

Stupidity doesn't make sense i suppose... I hope now some people reflect and really stfu because all this is annoying really.

Oh! let's not forget about VC that provides so many awesome games for us and soon Wiiware with so many awesome looking titles to satisfy us so that we don't have to wait forever to play great games. They do all these things for us, their loyal fans and all some ppl do is bitch around when Nintendo are killing themselves looking for solutions to please us!

Jesus some people are very irrational i suppose, ah, the same can be said for the DS. Smilie

I see where you're coming from but dude, LoZ: PH, MP:H, NSMB, PiP, FF series, DQ series, Castelvania (2), Pkmn, LA, LK, M64 DS, MkDS, RRDS, RE DS, DKR, DKJC, MvsDK, AT, MM... There's just too many too type down, and those are my fav from the top of my head! there's more great games on teh Ds than on the PS2! at least in my eyes, cause all these games are great and some are the best in the series since God knows when (Sonic Rush).

So why do people complain, (not you SL, i mean people who are complaining non stop!) when there's just so much there? DS has the RICHEST library i've seen on a console! And i thought no one would ever surpass the SNES...

So there you have it. I've seen on Kotaku some guys saying, "OMG the PSP has much better games!" It took me a while to think of 1. I see the people complaining as a buch of spoiled brats that have everything and want more, just cause there's nintendogs doesn't mean nintendo doesn't like hardcore anymore, maybe if people supported them more, they would suprise you! *looks at AC, Pinkmin, Disaster day of crysis* Plus don't forget there's more projects out there like Project Hammer which was PAUSED, not canned and also an apparent Kid Icarus coming up. I see what you're say and I understand that, but times are changing, whether us hardcore gamers like it or not.
You have to look at some of the benefits of these casual titles. Sure, we get the crap shovelware and uninspired efforts, but hasn't it always been like that anyway? The way I see it, it's either the casual stuff or movie licenses ruling the charts, but which one is better for the industry?
Getting the more casual players on board allows a more wider audience, and helps get gaming out of that rut it's been in for years. Sure, Playstation helped in bringing games to the mainstream attention, but it's Wii and DS that overcame the last hurdle.
And as Andrezao mentioned above, it's not as if we're losing hardcore titles to casual experiences, perhaps from third parties yes, but not since the SNES have we had truly great output from them anyway.
I wouldn't worry about it. The hardcore titles aren't going anywhere, they're merely getting some company, that's all. Nintendo saw where the money was, and as a business tactic, I applaud them for that. It's not as if the Hardcore-title dominated Gamecube got them anywhere. Smilie

GC had more hardcore titles than Wii in it's first year and a half. I'm pretty sure of that.

I personally don't see anything wrong with the choice of DS games, but it clearly still isn't for everyone, so something must be missing.

DS doesn't have a Super Mario Galaxy or GTAIV yet. It doesn't need one, but that's an example of "Uberkiller" game.

I think the Ds has everything from every genre. There is something for everybody, but surely everyon expects bigger titles on hom consoles cause thats where the main appeal is. The DS is a portable game, its like having a laptop, it does what a pc does, but not so good as a desktop, destops gets the latest tech, better upgrades, etc. Smilie

I've never had an issue with the DS. As a portable console, I don't expect the same things from it as I do from a home console. I actually think the DS is pretty awesome. It does that 'five minute' gameplay that the Wii also does. But the DS does it in the right setting. It's perfect for it.
