Review for And Yet It Moves (Hands-On) on Wii

Beginning life as a PC download title, And Yet It Moves is Broken Rules' debut WiiWare title. The best way to describe it would be a platformer with a twist...literally.

What initially seems like a standard left to right jumper - albeit a pretty one, with the great paper-like effects - very quickly reveals itself to take advantage of Wii. Early on, you'll encounter a roadblock that means you cannot go any further - well, not in a traditional game. And Yet It Moves, though, employs a level-spinning mechanic that allows you to walk up walls and on ceilings. In fact, who are we to say what walls or ceilings are? Broken Rules apply their name to the entire playing field - the whole world is your floor.

It's not just walls you can skip around, either. Boulders will begin to roll after you as the world is manipulated, loose platforms underneath will crumble away, dark abysses will make themselves apparent. How do you avoid these obstacles? Just spin. Rocks, mere seconds from your head, can be thrown back into the opposite direction to give you a second chance. Upon first glance, the mechanic seems exploitable. 'Why not just spin continually before attempting a landing from a high fall?' I questioned - but Broken Rules have made it so that you do not lose momentum from your falls just because you spin. Make a mistake and you pay for it, though not too harshly as checkpoints are regular. Plus they helpfully point in the right direction; necessary when you can fling yourself every which way.

Final Thoughts

And Yet It Moves is an intriguing game. From the short playtest the level design appears solid and the concept, and its execution when you find the control option you like the best, is perfection. Don't move, the game's nearly here and you don't want to miss it...

This really grabbed my attention - the art style is funky, the idea is very well executed and there is enough room in the control set-ups offered to help this appeal to those not quite as proficient at gaming than others.

The version Mike and I played was still missing various elements because the development process has yet to be completed, but what was on show definitely bodes well for the final release!

I forgot to mention that time trials are in there too, but it's uncertain if there'll be online leaderboards at this time...
