Review for Light Fall on PC

Cubed3 recently had the chance to go hands-on with an early build of a very intriguing platform adventure by the name of Light Fall, from a team over in Canada called Bishop Games. Working through a land of eternal night, facing off against many steep challenges and dastardly foes, this takes platform gaming to another level, matching the greats out there in the genre. Originally just for PC, this has now been unveiled as coming to Nintendo Switch in April. This upcoming romp is indeed one to keep a close eye on.

Players are tasked with controlling a strange little character as they travel across the forgotten world of Numbra, trying to figure out their own mysterious past, as well as save the land from imminent destruction. To help during the escapade, other than a cranky old owl guide called Stryx, there is a clever device called the Shadow Core. This is basically a special cube that can be used as a weapon, stepping-stone, protective obstacle to block lasers, or even as a means of latching onto devices to rotate them (think along the lines of turning cogs to lift gates, or spinning waterwheels to move a boat).

It is quite the handy piece of multi-purpose kit, without a doubt, and plays a big part in the forging of your own path through the four main Acts included. Want to see what is up above, eager to explore every nook and cranny, seeking out hidden treasures or even discovering handy shortcuts? Simply jump and use the block, jump again and use once more, and keep going for the limited number of times this is possible, before clinging onto a nearby surface to attempt wall-jumping upwards, before using the block ability again. Sounds simple... right? Well, part of the fun is the difficulty, and Light Fall really does love to keep gamers on their toes in that regard.

Right from the start, Light Fall gives off a striking NightSky or Hollow Knight vibe in its tone, a feeling of Super Meat Boy or Slime San in the difficulty of some of the challenges faced, yet also has the deep exploratory nature of Knytt Underground and Cave Story in how the most direct pathway is not always the only option. It is the open-ended nature of the world that makes everything so enticing, with the game attempting to lead players down a particular route, but tantalisingly leaving the merest of hints that something else may be possible to check out instead. It is a remarkably clever title.

Currently, Light Fall is being lined up for an April release, and it is quite apparent that all that is needed is some slight polishing, since what is already on offer is breathtakingly impressive. From the gorgeous soundtrack, to the atmospheric visuals, highly impressive voice acting, many hidden extras around the world, and the precision platforming (coming in both laidback fashion and speed-run-esque, twitch-reactionary form to appease both styles of gamer), Bishop Games certainly appears to have a smash hit on its hands.

Final Thoughts

Light Fall is out to test your skills in many ways, but also offers enough for those wanting a more sedate experience to still enjoy the excellence of Bishop Games' creation. It is packed to the brim with atmosphere, challenging delights, and also promises the inclusion of a Speedrun Competition in the final build, where fastest level completion times can be shared online. This is quickly shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2018.
