Review for Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan on Nintendo 3DS

When it was first announced that Nintendo had signed Etrian Odyssey from Atlus USA to distribute across Europe, gamers rejoiced as it seemed like the days of never getting niche adventures on this continent were over. Sadly, the result was worse than expected, with no promotion given and subsequent sales that meant further releases never made it here. On top of this, Nintendo's agreement with Atlus blocked other publishers from giving the second and third DS entries a shot over in this territory. However, with the new system (3DS) comes a new regime, with NIS America and Reef Entertainment striking a fresh contract to ensure gamers do not miss out on the superlative Dungeon Crawling RPG series again!

Earlier this year, looking at the US version of Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan that hit at the end of February, Cubed3's Javier explained in painstaking detail why Atlus' latest entry into the tough-as-nails role-player was probably the best of the sturdy bunch. Now, shockingly only six months later, the game has landed on European shores.

For someone that has never played an Etrian Odyssey release before, the whole matter can be quite daunting, and even after only about ten minutes there is a chance that many older RPG fans will turn the game off wondering why they bothered. After all, the whole process of having to build up a team before heading out into the world is quite laborious and a tiny bit tedious, if honest.

Perseverance is the key, though, and from the act of mapping out new locations on the touch-screen whilst adventuring, to soaring through the sky in a trusty sky ship to uncover new lands and secrets, the tale opens up, with plenty of depth to the story revealed through character and NPC interaction in various locales. Mixed in, as well, is a sturdy turn-based battle mechanic for when facing off against all manner of devilish foe, with the team chosen pitted against some truly unusual enemies along the way, with great care required to ensure the right formation is chosen and that items are carefully used to the best effect.

Sometimes retreating is the best form of attack, regrouping and heading back into the fold to delve deeper into the various labyrinths laid before the player. The all-new Casual Play option certainly helps, allowing newcomers to the series to acclimatise faster. For veterans of the series, the ten character classes and stacks of customisation will help add longevity to Legends of the Titans, as well as bring something refreshing to the established series whilst also keeping the strong nostalgia factor. There is so much to see and do in Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titans that is simply has to be played to be believed. Let the questing begin!
