Schrodinger's Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark (PlayStation 4) Review

Review for Schrodinger

The lid of the catbox of the quirky Schrödinger's Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark has been removed. The content is a cat in the world of a puzzle-platformer based on theoretic quantum physics, with appropriate jokes to go with the experience, and, of course, a fitting lead character in the shape of Schrödinger's Cat itself. One question remains, though: is the cat dead or alive? Read on for the answer!

It was an ordinary day at the Particle Zoo, when suddenly a security crash caused all the rogue quarks to escape from their inhabitants. Chaos was the immediate result of that casuality. That was, however, not the worst part of it all. The zoo is also host to the horrible Strange Quark, which turns everything it touches into strange-matter, and is exactly as horrible as it sounds. Whether or not the zoo, and the world, will survive without too much conceptual damage caused by the Strange Quark depends on one last determinant, Schrödinger's Cat.

Schrödinger's Cat has the help of an army of quarks, which can be used in various combinations to create different results. Possible results include helicopters, nets and explosives. With the help of these he has to navigate his way through the zoo, capture all the rogue quarks, and open the door to the Strange Quark to ensure no further damage is caused by the result of the unexpected security crash.

The puzzle aspects of Schrödinger's Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark are very fun and creative. The way in which quarks are combined into different materials creates depth that demands that the right materials are made from the resources provided, and these elements meld perfectly into the platforming gameplay.

One issue with the gameplay, however, is that almost all aspects are revealed in the introduction. This is a serious problem, as the key component in the majority of great puzzle-platformers is that the gameplay keeps on evolving throughout the game by introducing new fun and exciting elements to conquer. This game does not deliver that, and means the latter half turns out extremely dull due to the lack of new elements added into the formula, resulting in repetition and boredom, and creates an overwhelming learning curve early on.

Besides fun and creative gameplay, Schrödinger's Cat also offers quirky physics-related humour. The kind of humour the physics teacher always had a bad habit of throwing out during class that no one except the A-grade students understood. It is a satisfying element that adds to the atmosphere the title succeeds in creating. A big addition is the fact that the game presents a New Game Plus, in which all the stages are rearranged, creating an entirely new game.

It is time to answer the burning question everyone has: is Schrödinger's Cat alive when the lid has been removed and the contents of the catbox carefully examined? The answer is most certainly "Yes!" Schrödinger's Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark is a fun and creative puzzle-platfomer. The fresh feel its quark construction system adds to the gameplay helps it to stand out in the genre in a positive way. While the gameplay is fun, it is poorly laid out, though. The fact that almost all components are delivered in the tutorial, with no new elements added during the rest of the game, makes the latter half of Schrödinger's Cat feel more like a chore. Other than that, it is a great game with top quality ideas, and one that is certainly worth looking up for fans of the genre.
