The Lord of the Rings trilogy of movies are cause for much controversy with fans of the original books being unsure about their authenticity and followers of the films in constant dispute over which of the three is the superior. The games, though, are rather different as the quality is not always so high; therefore EA has stepped up to provide a variation on the usual home console action theme
For those of you that know nothing about the world of Lord of the Rings, never fear, as Third Age's storyline is barely anything to do with the main adventure that we all know and love in all honesty. So that means it is a definite no-no for those looking to witness the gay banter between Frodo and Sam. Instead everything is focused on a band of 'heroes' Gandalf has ordered to basically clean up in the background as the Fellowship progresses. The lead character is Berethor, a soldier of Gondoria who has lost his nearly all his memory (just recalling his search for Boromir and having Gandalf 'in' his head, showing him little movie sequences...*ahem*) and he is later joined by Idrial (one of Galadriel's elves), Elegost (a Dunedain ranger), Hadhod (a dwarf with links to Moria) and Morwen (a Rohan villager woman, with secret ties to Berethor). And there you have it

One of the main aspects of the movies, part of the reason many believe them to be so magical, is the soundtrack. Just as James Horner brought a haunting, yet soul-wrenchingly beautiful score to Titanic, Howard Shore crafted an epic range of what can only be described as 'stirring anthems' that swept through the entire extravagant trilogy. So how could EA possibly work to improve upon what was already perfect? How on (Middle) Earth could the Third Party genii make pieces that fitted each of the games scenarios better than in the big-screen version? Well, EA certainly did not want anyone to answer that question and decided instead to make the right choice in keeping Mr Shore's orchestral movements in tact, slotting the rousing and moving pieces in at the right times to produce a fantastic experience. And with the abundance extra voice acting from the likes of Ian 'Gandalf' McKellen and various 'unknowns' who do a damn fine job with the small range of speech they are allotted, plus the plentiful supply of *clinks*, *clunks*, *grunts* and other sound effects give Third Age a well-rounded 'sound' section, and another area to boast about!

The main question, though, is how does it play? Are we looking at the downfall of Square Enix or is it merely another case of Electronic Arts milking a license, but not really taking full advantage of it? Hmm, I would probably say 'somewhere in the middle'

And then there is a team-based overdrive move, called 'Perfect Mode', whereby when your special bar is completely full, your team of three on-screen fighters unleash a special joint attack, kind of like Symphonia's similar system. Then there are the skills that you can learn over time, which add a pleasing incentive to battle often
    Gameplay

    6

EA's first attempt at such an RPG is commendable. However, if more time had been spent on the detail here as it had been on the graphics, then things would be far improved.
    Graphics

    9

EA has done a marvellous job of recreating the scenarios and locations of Middle Earth. Excellent use of animation for characters as well.
    Sound

    8

You cannot go wrong with Howard Shore's epic musical score, hence EA stuck to it 100%. In addition, Gandalf's extra speech is seemlessly intertwined.
    Value

    7

Third Age is very short for an RPG experience of this ilk and the amount of extras are neither plentiful nor so interesting as to warrant another play-through...
    7

    /10

C3 Score As far as Lord of the Rings games go, this is by no means the worst and is worth at least a few rentals just to see the movie clips and hear Gandalf's extra commentary. In terms of a proper RPG, though, Third Age falls into the 'average' category, with some nice ideas, but not enough perfection execution to compete sufficiently...

I was pleasantly surprised by this - really wasn't expecting too much from it at all, being a massive RPG fan...But EA's managed to pull off the unexpected and bring a game that's probably on par with something like Square Enix's Sword of Mana...i.e. something that isn't anywhere near perfect, but is a damn good game nonetheless!

It's true, EA has had a bumper 2004 - with FIFA 2005, Tiger Woods 2005, Def Jam: FfNY and this, Third Age.

Perhaps this year will bode even better for the largest Third Party in the world! It'd certianly be interesting to see Square Enix's reaction to a little RPG competition, anyway...

Very true...I don't think I could have faced another pointless 3D platform-style adventure... The LotR franchise has been destined for the RPG genre and I just hope that the average sales so far do not deter EA from trying its hand at another RPG update next year...

Glad to see that the game's turned out okay; I doubt I'll be investing in it, as I prefer my RPGs to last a bit longer - but with such a familiar license, perhaps The Third Age will serve as the perfect introductory RPG for those new to genre.

That's what I'm hoping for as well Raindog. If EA can somehow manage to make RPGs even just a little more mainstream, then I certainly know my life will be the better for it, since it'd increase the chance of more Japanese RPGs making it to Britain!

I'm quite enjoying this game myself, Raz has hit the nail on the head though. This is a solid RPG but lacks a lot in the way of flair. But it does look promising for the future, the Original Def Jam was much in the same boat as this game and look what EA achieved with the sequel.

Thanks Gastrian - I've been giving this game quite a lot of attention, but have also been playing FF: Dawn of Souls at the same time and the difference, despite the obvious aesthetics that can't be compared on a fair basis, is quite astounding.

But like you say, and something Lee will attest to, Fight for New York was a damn fine improvement. I found that FIFA 2005 is the closest to Pro Ev so far, and Tiger Woods just gets better and better.

EA is in a process of learning from its mistakes (apart from in the FPS field it would appear... :roll:Smilie at last, so yeah, 2005 is going to be a very interesting one indeed!

A pretty easy game, and not a bad RPG, but the story is dire. The final boss, ah don't get me started.
Still the best console version of a LOTR's game...and there are 4. Though the GBA version is way better. I thought Evil mode and the coop were pretty pointless though.

I thought 7.9 was a little low, as I scored ROTK at 7.9 as well...that was an average mind you, and deserves a lowering, but Third Age is worth a look. And get it cheap on Play. Bargain.

Yeah, but Sharp, isn't that a little contradictory? You gave the GBA version 8.5, saying it was miles better than the GC version - kind of implying my 7.9 score was high. Now you're saying that 7.9 is too low??

    :sarcy: Smilie

My reasoning is that LotR is an RPG, so I compared it to other games in the same genre. Plus, I've never played the other three GC LotR titles, so could hardly just use someone else's review as a basis for comparison - it wouldn't have been a fair judgement then.

But some of you might well look at my 8.2 given to Need for Speed and think, wow he criticised that more than Third Age yet the LotR game gets a lower score...what's all that about?! But its comparative between genres and systems...and anyway, my opinion is just that. Not everyone is going to agree (unfortunately, hehe Smilie).

Rob - thanks, hope you get chance to nab it from him at some point, as it's worth a play...although two-player is 'alternate', so don't go thinking you can play at the same time! Hence it's pointlessness...

Finally, Gastrian - very true. At bargain prices this is perfect. As for the length - I did the old EA trick of changing the difficulty if I came across any tricky situations... Bad, but hey, EA shouldn't give people the opportunity to do such things...

Um...yeah, but no, but yeah, but no...ah Frazzle is going to be pissed when he reads that. I suppose I just thought it was more in the 8.0 region, but yeah scores aren't too important. And I lowered ROTK anyway, as 7.9 was WAY too generous. (Wow, I contradicted myself again) But you don't need to have played the other LOTRs games to know they were pretty average.

But was a really good review, and that's all that matters. :-D

I really like Baten Kaitos...not quite as easy to get into as Tales of Symphonia, but it's similar to Chrono Cross in many ways, which is a brilliant plus point in my eyes!
