It is quite a Rare occurrence when a game starts off under one title, goes right off the radar and still somehow manages to turn up entirely intact under a completely different guise and under the wing of a radically changed parent company. Then it is even more unusual to find that what replaced a well-known franchise character is actually some strange British guy that wears just a hat and pair of Y-front undergarments...Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of It's Mr Pants!
Mr Pant was originally Donkey Kong's Coconut Crackers, but then Rare lost all rights to Nintendo franchises when the British outfit was sold to Microsoft for a ridiculous amount of money. Therefore, the only option was to rework the game completely with a different character
The music is great, as in all of Rare's games. The theme tune is so terrible it is actually hilarious, with a simple Bontempi beat in the background with Mr Pants dum-di-dumming away in time...Sounds awful, right? Well yes, but it fits in with the surroundings brilliantly. And anyway, the in-game music is far improved, with some extremely catchy tunes throughout, with one that sounds particularly Tetris-esque. But far and away the highlight has to be the voice acting in It's Mr Pants. Practically every menu move you make is greeted by shouts of 'Poo, smelly!', 'Rubbish!', 'Mmm, fresh!' or similar gravel-voiced nonsense. Then there are the cute little voices that accompany the help light-bulb (aptly called Helpo...) that pops up when you have had to try a level a few times unsuccessfully. Top draw!
The problem that would have arisen there would have been the depth perception on the GBA, which has proved to be a stickler for Rare's GBA team already in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge and Sabre Wulf. Therefore it is great to see the old tried-and-tested 2D field making a return, with random shapes (lines and squares of various sizes) appearing on the screen one at a time, whilst you decide where best to place them. Your aim? To form rectangles or squares of the same colour and larger than 2x2 in size, thus making them all disappear to everyone's (yours' and Mr Pants') delight. This can be done be either placing similar colours next to each other, but if you are in a sticky situation, with not enough empty space on the board, never fear
You may look at this game and just turn it off straight away or suddenly become so over-awed by its amazing qualities that you simply cannot look away. It could go either way and all comes down to the way you understand the Rare mind-set. Personally I love the 'unusual' work at hand, with its crayola scrawlings that look like Yoshi's Island on drugs. The rough edges around everything suit the proceedings perfectly, giving what could be a plain puzzler an eye-capturing theme. The characters are all very cute to see and extremely comical in there actions, the menus are all clear and easily navigable and the colours used in the main puzzle arena are not painful to see, making intense sessions a pleasure to compete in. Crude, but acceptably so...

But for all the aesthetic 'glamour' found in It's Mr Pants, it would be a fruitless purchase if the main puzzle element of the title was lacking in either adrenaline-pumping action or a logical setup and play mechanic. Thankfully, just like the best puzzle titles to be found in the world, Mr Pants delivers on both counts to create one of the freshest, yet horrifically frustrating experiences on the Game Boy Advance since its launch. Just how does it do this, though? Because Rare decided against keep the isometric viewpoint originally conceived for Coconut Crackers!

Gameplay

The meat of the game is very tasty indeed. Taking a simple concept and moulding a stellar title from it is not as easy as it might seem, but Rare manage it masterfully.
Graphics
8
The strange crayola styling is akin to Yoshi's Island, except rather more on the rough side. However, since this is purposely done and there are pants all over we can forgive Rare!
Sound
9
Catchy tunes, including a Tetris-a-like theme, plus the brilliant use of voice sampling raises a smile on more than one occasion.
Value
9
With so much to do with just the main puzzle mechanic, plus unlockable features, It's Mr Pants is one game that just cannot be put down! Just a shame the multiplayer was ditched...

C3 Score Rare has done it again. This is the fifth game released for the GBA, including the DKC ones with Nintendo, and it is right up there with them all in terms of quality. Whilst it may seem rather unorthodox, you simply cannot overlook this little gem of a game. Give thanks to THQ for finally having enough faith to release this...and then go buy it at its ultra-cheap price!/10

What should be pointed out is that people are very worried about this because Artoon is developing it on behalf of Nintendo.
HOWEVER, I loved what they did with Yoshi's Topsy Turvy/Universal Gravitation...and what I've seen of this so far looks faithful to the original (although the controls are apparently not quite as tight).
I reckon this could potentially be another million seller in Japan...

I'm not so worried about the Artoon connection - I think Nintendo will keep the leash rather tight on this one, particularly because it's a sequel to one of their classics, and because of the lack of love for Universal Gravitation.
I can definitely see it selling a million in Japan, yep. :-D

I have to say this looks pretty damn good. I haven't played the original :O but from what i've heard it's great. My only worry is a saturation in the 2D platformer handheld market but I'm sure Nintendo will space them out adequately. Nice work though :
Appletini please, easy on the 'tini'.

I'm looking forward to this sequel, I was so excited when it first got announced. I just really hope they don't mess it up and disappoint me...

you forgot that yoshi's story on n64 was craptacular. It was gorgous to look at and was fun to play for the five minutes that it took to play it. The snes version was pretty darn challenging and long, but the 64 version was so basic it wasn't funny.

I was expecting something, since it would have been a good setting and a good game with good gameplay. But with marks like 2 and 3 - which you seldom deal out - no one should buy this game.
I know: Let's build marine-troops to jerk the game out of hand of poor parents and grandma's to give the world something of its peace back... *sight* But I know right now, thatthis game will sell like shit on a warm day... I mean like bread cut in slices (As we say in Germany), with only the good name alone. poor shame!
I think it was gamespot or ign.com, shich rated this game a 4.5 out of 10 and so... believe cubed3, guys, if you want to live! (hey, look, I cited Terminator!)
Hasta la vista, babies!
Or was it "Have got a Vista, Billy?"

1) Most Impressive Game Engine:
RE4 is probably the one with the best engine that I've played. Admittedly, some character movement was static and deaths didn't have that rediculous "ragdoll" effect. Nevertheless, the reaction to certain shot body parts was good.
2)Most Beautiful Game:
Killer7 probably strikes out to me as being special, especially graphically.
3)Game with the best bosses:
Metroid Prime. Simple.
4)Game with best story:
Shock shock horror, I'm going to go with a casual "overrated" game. Final Fantasy X was decent, as was Metroid Prime's backstory.
5)Best Twist:
Killer7, the whole game you think that Harman is the one with 7 personalities. It's infact Gastrian, who killed every other member of the Killer7 and uses their weapon and head, to become each personality. Mind bending stuff.
6)Best Soundtrack and use of music:
7)Most Played Multiplayer Game:
Super Smash Bros Melee and TimeSplitters 2/Future Perfect. Both brilliant fun and last for agggggeeesss.
8)Most Played Singleplayer Game:
Resident Evil 4, played it through 5 times. Other than that OoT on the Collector's Edition.
9)Best Party Game:
Super Smash Brothers Melee or Super Monkey Ball or TimeSplitters.
10)Best Boss Fight:
That last boss in ZoE was quite fun, since the other machine was just as good as Jehuty. Although, the best would probably be Meta Ridley in MP.
11)Funniest Game:
Resident Evil 4, the Ganados did some funny things when shot. Wario Ware for it's randomness comes 2nd.
12)Most Visually Impressive Boss Fight:
Jecht in FFX. Gigantic monster atop this castle area surrounded by flames. Graphics weren't amazing but the scale of the boss and the area was good.
13)Most Overated Game:
Mario Kart Double Dash. I dislike it and can't stand the way the karts are controlled. Too heavy and sluggish.
14)Best Co-Op game:
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles/Four Swords Adventures. I really enjoyed these, the way each player competed but also had to help each other to progress through the game.
