Review for Gynophobia on PC

Gynophobia is the abnormal fear of women, and it's also a video game. The protagonist is an average young man. He lives in a house, plays video games, and is deathly afraid of spiders... and women. For reasons unexplained, the sight of either of them causes uncontrollable shakes. Only by fighting his way out of a drug-induced nightmare can the protagonist overcome these debilitating fears.

First off, this video game is about thirty minutes long, so there's not much to talk about. The main character starts in his mother's room. There's fine art on the walls, a broom on the floor, pink panties on the bed, and a book titled "Potion Recipes." Is this supposed to be significant, or is it just plain nonsense? In any case, it's a confusing way to start off. Upon leaving, he sees a spider crawl into the kitchen, and then decides to play an FPS.

There are about four stages and a boss fight worth of shooting action. All of the enemies behave the same. They rush at the main character with the intention of groping him to death. It's very shallow. The second stage involves finding various parts to repair a van, which doesn't add anything to the game, aside from padding. In a way, it comes off as more of a project. There are a bunch of ideas here, but they don't gel. The moment to moment zombie shooting isn't in any way fun. It just feels like something that has to be done, like scrubbing mildew off a bathtub wall.

After playing the first couple of stages, there's a short intermission. The main character goes to answer the doorbell, but through the peephole, he sees a woman in a low-cut top. This causes him to be overcome with intense fear. Thankfully, the spider has left the kitchen, and inside there's one of mom's potions. Without a second thought, he drinks it, because apparently, this is Alice in Wonderland, then he immediately falls asleep. The next couple of stages involve shooting spiders, as well as zombie women. One of the music tracks sounds like something by Nine Inch Nails, but that's the only noteworthy aspect.

After destroying the boss, the main character wakes up, and both his arachnophobia and Gynophobia are cured. That's convenient, but also ridiculous. What if he never defeats the spiders and zombie women? Does he just remain unconscious? Well, there is a woman at the door, so he needed a treatment that works almost immediately, even if it is potentially fatal. It's never explained how he got either of these phobias in the first place, or why they're linked. This makes for a game that is poorly thought-out and absurd. The only positive is that it's really short. A few things happen, none of them entertaining, but at least it's over.

Very Bad

Gynophobia is a mess. Events just sort of occur, and the player is expected to roll with them. There are a few stages of shooting action, but they're among the most mundane and dull the genre has to offer. Some ideas cobbled and strung together in a sequence doesn't make for an interesting or well-designed game. When it's all over, all that's left is a boggled mind, and a feeling that those thirty minutes could have been better spent elsewhere.
