Picture the scene. It's 1995, Playstation has recently hit and Nintendo's Game Boy is slowly disappearing from the mainstreams' eyes. Normally, once a decline has begun, there is no way back, with popularity tumbling until the format is dead, but in an exceptional turn around the handheld went from dying to one of the most profitable product lines in video gaming. The sole reason for this? Pok

This is where the game shines. The storyline isn't the best, but everything is worthwhile when you sample the delights of the battle system and realise how complex yet easy everything is.
    Graphics

    6

Clear cut and cute, the graphics were never brilliant. They're adequate, but it's nowhere near a visual stunner by any stretch of the imagination.
    Sound

    6

Blippy, with some quite terrible sound effects at times. The music makes up for it to an extent, with some memorable tunes that you might find yourself humming later.

C3 Score The original Game Boy's finest moment, almost cooked to perfection, with the raw sides being grilled to flawlessness in the sequels on the Game Boy Colour. If you think this game is for kids, play it and guess again; it fits into the Nintendo philosophy of 'anybody can play', and everybody should play this. Impeccable.

I adore this - Gold and Silver were a huge improvement, though.

Looking back on it now, I hate the "lets give a sense of depth by making your pokemon look more pixalated" effect.

Pokemon was a classic though, and Gold and Silver just imrpoved on it! (all the others seem kindo crap though)

Only game I really ever played on the Game Boy, it really is a classic. You can spend hours on it, or just a little while and you always enjoy it. Shame they whored it off so many times...

Blue, my first Pokemon game. It was also better than Red by MILES, simply because Blue has Magmar and Electabuzz doesn't.

Cheers Mason, I'm about to go start anew on this. Will complete by tomorrow evening!

I agree with Blade2t3 there, soon enough Pokemon will be at the front of every shop window again, thanks to this new resurgence in all these Pokemon games.
I've always enjoyed the franchise - good clean innocent fun, and when although it's always been popular, when Diamond and Pearl are released, the craze will be everywhere again - TV, cards, games & all!

Much better than the gratituous violence and maturity everyone's exposed to lately.
