Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 - DB Super Pack 2 (PlayStation 4) Review

Review for Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 - DB Super Pack 2 on PlayStation 4

The first paid DLC pack for Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 was considerably disappointing, missing the many opportunities it had to include content fans were dying to get their hands on, from the new characters and new storylines of the fantastic rebirth of the franchise, Dragon Ball Super. Can this second DLC learn from the mistakes of its predecessor, or will the worrying trend of little content for a high price tag continue?

Warning: there are major Dragon Ball Super spoilers throughout this review!

What exactly is there in this second DLC pack? Something very similar to the first one. DB Super Pack2 consists of a new stage - the tournament ground from the Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 battle - eight new attacks, three new costumes, a new vehicle to travel around in, and a handful of customisable elements, along with the important stuff: two new characters and a new story to play through.

There's been another change in history! The extra story missions in this pack jump into the Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 arc from Dragon Ball Super. The change this time means not only is Buu absent from the tournament between the Gods of Destruction, but Goku is too! The Time Patrollers have to step in and the player takes the place of Goku within the tournament. Of course, this plays all sorts of havoc with the timeline, and gives the tournament some alternate moments to what played out in the anime, but it's still close enough for players to enjoy all the main story.

It also gives a glimpse into some of the English voice actors that have yet to appear in the dubbed release, which is (at time of writing) a good 60-70 episodes behind the Japanese release. The problem with this adaptation of the arc is that the story takes less than an hour to complete! It's a full arc, with plenty going on, so the developers could have easily stretched it to double or three times that...

The new characters bundled in this DLC are none other than the God of Destruction from Universe 6 and his attendant. Yes, the tubby kitty Champa and Whis' female counterpart, Vados, are joining the battle. Considering these are other universe versions of Whis and Beerus, there is obviously a worry that this will result in lazy clone characters; just the usual cosmetic changes with the same moveset or minor alterations to it. Thankfully, that's not the case here. Both new characters are unique to play as and feel individual. Champa is an okay addition, but Vados is where this DLC really shines; she's a fantastic new character who is a lot of fun to experiment with.

The next DLC has already been revealed as being based on the subsequent arc from the anime, the Future Trunks arc (which could mean Super Saiyan Rose!), and will hopefully give a bit more time to the story. Stay with Cubed3, where we'll be covering it as soon as it lands.

Subpar

A better attempt, and content that includes characters that fans actually want, but still rather lacking for the cost. The inclusion of the Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 story arc is exactly the way Bandai Namco should be going, but it's so short! It easily could have been stretched to double the amount of time considering the source material.
