Review for Shadow of the Tomb Raider: The Price of Survival on PlayStation 4

Downloadable content for Shadow of the Tomb Raider hasn't made the season pass seem worth the price of admission so far, and despite the discounts in recent months, it's unlikely this fourth piece of the package will change many minds on dropping the cash. The Price of Survival sets Lara on a small mission to unravel the mystery behind one of antagonist Amaru's lost possessions.

Q'orianka in Paititi's Skull Cave once again offers a new quest for Lara to undertake, with a strange wheel of sorts that turns out to have once belonged to Trinity's leader, Amaru, pointing to various locations in the region. Split into three areas for Lara to conquer, The Price of Survival is a slightly better bit of DLC than those that have come before it.

With one section focusing on stealthily taking out enemies, another putting puzzle skills to the test with some gate raising and rope tethering, and a final area adding a little more puzzle solving into the mix thanks to poisonous spores that make it trickier to navigate around, there is more variety here than on previous occasions. The accompanying story arc involves learning more about Amaru's humanity and his love for his family and people in an attempt to encourage sympathy for his character, but it's too shoehorned in for many to really care.

In the end, it's the content that matters, and while, once again, this is only an hour's worth of new gameplay, and even though it is a simple enough ride through to the end, the variety outweighs the low points. A new outfit, silent pistol, and ability to track enemies when aiming over them are the new rewards with this DLC. In addition, many past tombs from the main adventure gain Score and Time Attack modes.

Good

Although the story arc isn't anything to get excited about, this is one of the better DLCs to have come out for Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The Price of Survival features just enough variety with enemies and puzzles to make it worth a chance on its own, but still doesn't quite make the full season pass tempting enough.
