What do you get if you shove various Nintendo characters, worlds and history onto a small 12cm disc? Sweaty palms, lack of sleep and friends banging on your door gagging for more... It's the return of the world's biggest franchise mash-up, Smash Bros, seeing Mario, Link, Kirby and chums duke it out for the coveted crown of Brawl once more!
The core concept hasn't changed since its conception almost a decade ago. Like its processors Smash Bros is all about the frantic, fun beat-em-up action nicely blended with side-on platforming elements. Up to four fighters make their way into the arena to duke it out, throwing punches, slashing swords and sometimes popping the odd fart or two; it's an all out war to inflict damage and send foes a-flying! Once high enough you can knock 'em off the stage and earn a much deserved point, the winner being the last chap alive or those who scored highest if going for time.
One of the more outstanding features is the cast of characters. If you placed an ad in the local classifieds for a for an all-star Nintendo game, along would come Mario bopping along with his quirky brother Luigi, his lady-on-the-side Peach, old-rival Donkey Kong, portable-taxi Yoshi and the hero-for-hire, Link. You've also got some less-known and some downright bizarre faces this time round. The muscle bound bad-boy of Fire Emblem, Ike, dons a mammoth sword for some devastating, if a little slow, attacks. Metal Gear's Solid Snake springs from his card-board hideout for some explosive combat and even Mario's greatest rival, Sonic the Hedgehog, whizzes into action like a squirrel on crack. Unfortunately for most, you've also got some less useful and more gimmicky options, but the majority are action packed and ready to go: there's definitely enough to throw into the arena!
What use is having so many old and new franchises bound together without a whopping great adventure to throw them into? Brawl aims to really take single-player forward with a story dubbed the "Subspace Emissary". Here we see an unknown chap who wanders about setting off bombs and generally wreaking havoc. In the midst of all the chaos Mario and Kirby shake their booty to impress Nintendo princesses: Zelda and Peach. Unfortunately for them a different explosion's about to happen as yet another bomb detonates, a giant piranha plant appears and Mario is hurtled off into space, all before tea-time!

As more bombs detonate and characters become captured by evil forces, we gradually find the good folk working together to find out what on earth's going on in the world of Subspace. Some amusing alliances form, and some down-right random ones too, from hero Link wandering through a forest and sneaking past Yoshi snoozing on a tree-stump to space's top pilot Fox McCloud making an unwilling alliance with the banana-craving maniac Diddy Kong. To tell the tale are a series of gorgeous cut-sequences that can send any Nintendo fan into an orgasmic frenzy
Stat balancing is a relieving aspect of Brawl that sees the spotlight shine over some of those considered a little weaker than others, and toning down some of the previously overpowering beasts. Little tyke Ness packs a wallop with better speed and strength, Zelda
Once friends pack up, forget to clean up and make their way home after a day of non-stop Smash action or the Internet breaks down, there are a handful of stadium and gallery modes that make a return. You've got the chance to beat the living daylights out of a heavy punching bag and just before the counter runs out deal a final blow to send the poor sod flying into the distance
Gameplay
9
As fast, fun and enjoyable as ever. Packed to the brim with more to do, a short but sweet single player story mode and a fair try at online play. Simple to get into, but incredibly hard to put down! Characters and stages are well balanced, and show a lot of care and consideration. The addition of co-op and even more multiplayer features The only major drawback is the online component, that lacks communication and flexibility.
Graphics
9
Tip top character models, facial expressions and gorgeously animated movement. Some highly detailed stages really stand out with intricate detail and atmosphere, though some are slightly less impressive. On the whole, a superbly presented package with high quality Nintendo stamp of approval.
Sound
10
If there's a 10 to give, it certainly goes to sound. If there's a Nintendo theme that's been lodged in your brain, it's bound to be on the 200+ soundtrack list. Fantastic arrangements that remain true to the original design. Perfect.
Value
9
With 100s of items to unlock, a fairly meaty storyline and online play: it's truly a lasting package for the Wii. The only drawback perhaps is that quite a few things come unlocked when first booting up. A smaller starting stage/character roster and less options initially could have made unlocking features far sweeter.
9
C3 Score Essentially Smash Bros. Brawl is a refinement of the series, a whopping huge cake topped off with your favourite treats and baked to near-perfection, making sure every layer, and every inch is as tasty as possible. It's not perfect, there are areas that could be improved - mainly online, stage building and communication but Smash Bros. Brawl still remains a fantastic look at over two decades of Nintendo.
/10
That's pretty much what you've got when inserting the 12-inch plastic into the glowing blue slot: a delicious treat on your hands, with over 30 different flavours to choose from. That cake, my friends, isn't a lie!

I've yet to play the game but I'd have to agree on the drawbacks you listed about the game.
This is probably the sort of game where you'd want a better online field and communication. Why not communication with friends? The option could be there to turn it on and off even in friend matches. You wouldn't have to worry about strangers and the like then. But I guess voice chat or something would slow the game play further.
I also heard you cannot play on custom built stages online. Again, this could have been a friend matches-only thing, but I fail to see why this option wasn't included. As or the stage building concept itself, it's a brilliant addition and just what we all needed, but I can't comment on the versatility of it or anything.
I would also agree on giving us less to start with at the start. Unlocking things feels good, and gives you a better sense of accomplishment. Why not start with the original cast from SSB64 and let us unlock the rest? Having more to unlock can be fun, just so long as it's not too challenging (only for certain things).
But again, I've yet to play it, so I can't really comment. It's obviously one of the best games made though so it's not going to change my mind about purchasing it.

Definately one of my top favourite games of all time. Better than Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy, imo.

Depends on who reviews each game - to be fair TP was a great game at the time, and the reviewer felt it deserved the score it received.
I decided not to give Brawl a 10 because of quite a few flaws that stop it being closer to perfect in my eyes.
Still a fantastic game though!

Great review JB. I agree with the score, though the game is fantastic there are some flaws which doesn\'t make Brawl one of the best games ever.
I also agree with your Value comment where we should have been given les things in order for more to unlock. It was lame that most of the newcomers were already there when you booted up the game. ( Edited 06.04.2008 06:59 by mOojc )

I never got into Smash Bros. 64 and really found Melee quite boring...and after reading this review, to be honest I doubt my mind's going to be changed this time round. Glad I read this, since I was actually being tempted to part with cash due to all the hype surrounding its release. Think I'll stick with Mario Kart instead

It's a great review, there are a few things I disagree with. Personally I can't see why Value didn't get a 10, since there is no other game that I will be playing for years on end. It's already exceeded the value of every other game I own, except Pokémon Diamond & Melee of course. (Melee I had kept playing often right up until I got Brawl)
Oh, and while I agree with the Sound score...
Stone Tower from Majora's Mask has been lodged in my brain... and it's not in Brawl.
Neither is the Venus Lighthouse song...
I also would have given graphics a 10, since in all honesty, this and Mario Galaxy are and possibly will be the best looking Wii games of all time.
And I would have mentioned tripping, that would make the Gameplay score of 9 a bit more justified. 8)
I would have given it an easy 10 myself, but I guess Smash just isn't for anyone, Jesusraz and my dad are living proof (my dad's never gotten into it...)

10 suggests near perfection or pretty much perfect.
Something like Galaxy imo definitely deserves a 10 as it is pretty much flawless. Then again no game can be perfect but Galaxy is pretty much up there with the other 10s.
So giving it a 9/10 means I'm not into it? Are you mad?
Brawl is a fantastic game, I love it to pieces. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the series. I saved up and got it on release on the GameCube, but in my eyes there are quite a few faults that don't make it that much a 10.
Online play is my main concern - and I've detailed that already. With the lack of proper profiles (i.e. win/loss, stats) and something that you can show to others about how good you are then it really isn't perfect.
Graphically it's great, there are some really superb level designs and the characters themselves have been modeled to a tee, but again there is definitely room for improvement - poor/muddy textures and some lack of care in some levels dropped it down a notch.
I'm not going to blindly say that this is pretty much perfect, because isn't. It would be pointless to write a review purely on merit, as imo there's enough that has room for improvement (online, lack of returning Stadium modes, cloned roster etc...) that drops it down a tiny notch.
I love the game, it really deserves to be in a Wii collection, but I'm not going to let my fan status let me throw a 10 at it.

I know what you mean, but Twilight Princess got a 10. I know the reviewers were different, but it just looks strange is all...
I agree with rating Mario Galaxy higher though. While I prefer Braw as a game to play, Mario Galaxy was more flawless, and it shone perfection in almost every way, as a single player game. I\'ve noticed single player games nearly always get rated better than multiplayer games, but so far Brawl has rated much higher than Melee (something I sometimes don\'t understand)
And when I said some people just don\'t like it, I meant that sometimes as a reviewer you have to take other people\'s opinions into account. While Mario Galaxy is a game that is hard to dislike no matter your taste in games, some people and Smash Bros just reject each other, and that would lower the game\'s score overall. Infact for me, who would individually give the game a 10, that would be one of the reasons I would put it down, the fact that even some hardcore gamers still can\'t get into it.
We may not see eye to eye on this, but as far as I\'m concerned, online is a bonus that I wouldn\'t expect from a game like Smash Bros, especially concerning lag issues, which have been worked on very well if you ask me. Lack of ranking sucks, and so does the lack of communication, but I\'m just glad to be able to play anyone I know without having to travel the globe to their house

But you seem to not understand - I\'m not lowering the score for people who reject Smash Bros. I\'ve played and loved all three games in the series. Sure, online is a great bonus, and brawl benefits well from having it.
So they added it, it works and expands th games lifespan.
I\'m not going to ignore the lack of communication and rankings to better the score though. They could have easily included it, it\'s been done in the DS Wi-Fi games. So as I say I\'m not going to ignore the problems a game has just to give it a higher score, how would that benefit readers?
I did say that online was good, but it lacks some simple additions that would have easily shot it up to a 10, I\'m sure. The gameplay is fantastic, but unfortunately things have been missed out, is all.
To just blindly give something a 10/10 score when it does have some noticeable drawbacks would be a bit fanboyish and wouldn\'t do our site a whole lot of credibility. I feel the 9/10 is well justified - a great game with a few minor flaws that drops it down a notch.
At least we agree that its an awesome game.

A bonus? We are playing games from this generation, online is a must for a game like Brawl. Online on Brawl was not a bonus, to me it was a necesscity. While games like SMG are obviously single player based, a game like Brawl where multiplayer is it's very core, it is obvious that online had to be included and done well. Too bad it was included but not done as well as it could be. Therefore it does not deserve 10/10. Heck even games like Mario Kart DS did a better job online.

Nah, I have friends who just can't get into Smash Bros too.
The thing with online is, Smash Bros is a game where there is no room for button lag, as offline multiplayer is about light fast reactions. Personally I was surprised they pulled it off, since I think it is the kind of game that is very hard to implement with an onlibe system, unlike an FPS or a racing game, which can probably be made easier and with less lag. I'm not an expert with how online stuff works, but I think I can assume that putting a game like Smash Bros online is very different & much harder than with a game like Mario Kart.
And fair enough about those points. Any game with things missing or faults is a game with things missing or faults, whichever way you look at it. Only a game like Mario Galaxy which seems flawless can be deserving of a 10, and I guess the same could be said for Twilight Princess, seeing as it's only big flaw was that it was samey (for many) which isn't really a flaw of the game itself, the game itself is made quite flawlessly, unless you take completion time into account.

Yeah, the whole scoring games thing is flawed anyway. You can't really "score" a game, and if you do it's the review text that tells you what's what anyway.
For example, that review tells me what I need to know, and from the pros & cons I make a decision myself on how good the game is.
Although... I guess there is a big difference between rating a game 10/10 & 4/10, you know which ones are much buy & which ones you should stay well away from, for me, 9 or 10 is must buy, and 7 or 8 is a buy if I like the series, so I guess scores help when a review doesn't balance all the positives & negatives, similarly to how a review may say "Mario Galaxy is amazing, but here are all the negatives:" and while the review score may be 10/10, without the score the reader may be under the impression it got lower due to the way it was written (But I guess then the reviewer isn't too good
)
So that's just my thoughts on reviews. I dunno why I posted them here, thought it'd be a good time.

9/10 is a fantastic score for ANY game, it's just that this game in particular, people were getting so hyped up about it and thought so highly of it (possibly due to the success of 64 & Melee) that come play-time they are oblivious to the flaws & only concentrate on the vast number of ups the game has, hence debates about scores on a review.
That's my theory, as it has happened to me before
