Following on from the news post concerning the availability of Nintendo related SD cards, I wanted to know, if anyone believes this is a wise move by Nintendo?

Looking at the history of Nintendo and memory cards, experience says no! The N64's memory cards we're over priced for the amount you could store on them and were completely lacking compared to the cheaper and easily accessible PS1 units. The Gamecube also followed suit. The Memory card 59 was over priced with a lack of space. Meaning gamers would have to either delete saves or buy other cards. The Mem 251 took too long to come out and even the mem 1051 came out too late.

The idea of SD cards for me made perfect sense. If Nintendo don't get the sort of shelf space there hoping for from retail outlets, at least they won't have to worry about shipping card to places that barely allow Nintendo merchandise on the shop floor. What could be easier than picking up an SD card? There so widely used in Digital cameras and Mobiles, there's no way you can't pick one up. Unless the market changes rapidly, Nintendo are in a safe spot. Buy and SD card, insert it into the (already provided) Mem card

Yes, at the moment I think it's a good idea. This coupled with the onboard 512mb flash memory makes ita nice way of storage. No major booboo's here for Ninty. Keeps the console affordable and accessible to everyone.

I don't mind, SD cards will always be waaaay cheaper that any sort of offical proprietary memory cards. It also means it's safe to buy most well known 3rd party cards withought fear of data corruption.

You can still plug it into a 3rd party hard drive anyway no? So who cares about storage, it wont be an issue..

but if you can do that then will hackers be able to get those precious VC ports and put them on the internet for emulation on 360's and PS3's???

Why go to the trouble of making emulators suited for the 360 and PS3, when you already have emulators for your PC up for grabs Smilie

It could happen though... Mayb Ninty have some way of working around it?...

Well all the haker buisness might not much of a problem i remember nintendo saying a while back they will update the firm ware and with wiiconnect24 they can force it on to your system. Plus I don't think microsoft has had too much trouble in this area for the live arcade and they allow all sorts of stuff to be connected to the 360.

I think they'll team up with an existing manufacturer and just get them to re-package some of an existing line as the 'official' solution, so much easier than them developing their own.

I'm not concerned about piracy with hard drives either. I imagine the games will have some kind of encoding on them that only allows them to be played on the Wii you downloaded it to, tied to user ID in some way. Nintendo tend to be very good against piracy.

Yeah, say that to Romreactor.netSmilie
Oh wait, probably shouldn't have said that...

I just plan on using my 30GB ipod as an external hard drive for it if I find that I need the room.

nintendo has made a good move using SD cards, so what they dont have the 20gb+ memory hard drives like the other two but who cares becuase its a gaming console not a pc, ive also seen some SD hard drives where you slot a SD attached to a wire leading to the hardrive into the system and hey presto any amount of memory is available! for a price!!! Did you see them getting pirated much at the time when they were current generation, though?

I definitely remember confirmation that there was going to be DRM protection and something else to cut out piracy.

1 thing to remember; the 512mb will be partaialy used up by bits and bobs like the Opera Browser, it's cache, probably VC emulators, and many other things. Just like with the 360's hard drive, although it's 512mb in size, there won't be 512mb available.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.
Cubed3 Member

I'm hoping that they have a separate section for the online bits and bobs so that you get most of that 512mb for VC/game saves storage. Course I'm hoping they double the size of it more.

Cubed3 Member

Well in the Opera interview they said it would be on the Flash memory, and since it's there, I would not put it past Nintendo to skimp on memory and put the whole OS on there.

who would bother doing it for a PS3 / 360.

you can already port emulators onto a normal x box.

Personally even if the Wii had about 4 billion GB of memory built in I'd still get a memory card. I hate the idea of not being able to take my saves to a friend's house. I think 2.5GB should be more than enough to download all the NES, SNES, and N64 games I need and save all my games. I don't see why Microsoft amd Sony are bothering to waste all that money putting in 40 gigabytes that will never be used...

i just hope the SD cards will be reliable, i hate 3rd party GC memory cards because your data always ends up corrupt (can anyone please tell me why this is?) but 1st party cards are way too expensive.

I've had plenty of different brands of SD cards, and all of them have worked perfectly, so I doubt there's going to be too much of a problem with getting crap cards, unless you try buying off some shady character on ebay.

I really like SD cards as they're small, have big storage capacities, are cheap, and are used in a lot of devices. This choice to use SD cards as a memory slot is a fantastic decision, since we have the option to get reliable 3rd party cards for cheap.

Because it does get used - I have several gigs of game demo's and trailers on my 360. I stream music, but otherwise I'd also have around 6 gigs of music on there as well, not to mention another 5 or so of photos. Anyway, its 20GB on the 360 atm.

Remember, companies that make console peripherals are shit companies whose stuff is aimed at idiots - hence the shitness of third party memory cards. Proper memory isn't like that, so stop whining about 3rd party SD cards. As long as you don't buy russian-made triangular paper-based ones, you'll be fine.

Ah the joys of common sense and common knowledge - no wonder Nintendo is making that DS game.

Logic 3 don't make digital camera memory for a reason.

Ah that reminds me of my friend's corrupted SSB Melee data... All 4 times it happened after he got all the characters again. The strange this was that he replaced his memory cards several times, and even used one of my official ones one time and it still deleted itself... He even got a new Gamecube and it kept on happening...

But yeah if you don't want to buy an unreliable SD card, don't... It's more sensible to save up for a while and get a good one than get a cheap one right now. Plus with the 512MB of on board memory it's not like you're gonna need it desperately anyway...

i always thought the VC would perhaps save which games you have permission for, atleast that way you wouldnt have to have to save the game onto memory but it just saves the game onto RAM, dosent this seem more appropriate for a system with little memory?
