Since im going to buy a ds lite soon and pick up some games, im just curious, is Nintendo planing on making a follow up to Elektroplankton, with a save feature? Right now, that's the only thing stoping me from buying this game together with the ds, the lack of a save feature.
I mean, i guess a Elektroplankton 2.0 would need to boost more than just a save feature, but to me that would be enough. Anyways.. does people know if a new version is in the making? Or heard any plans about it?

It sold like shite, even in Japan I believe, so I doubt it.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Yeah me thinks that too. It'd be a great idea but i'd say it's very unlikely

So did most cube games but they still kept making them. Nintendo is the type of company that will make the games it wants to make whether they sell or not.

Good point, and I suppose it was only made by one bloke so didn't cost a lot to make. Possibly then, but my gut feeling is no.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Ok so it sold bad, didn't know that..
What if they did a 2.0 version with save features that wasn't called Elektroplankton but something else, and this could be justified with having a non-plankton theme to it, sure probably organic, but not plankton.. so that they called it Elektroforest or whatever, instead of Elektroplankton 2.0

Personaly I like the 2.0 name better, cuz it makes me think of a hardcore serious software like Photoshop or something similar.. strange that I like that connotation, since it's suposed to be this art style music game, but hey, it's just my opinion.. guess it wont happen though.. It's a shame though, cuz i think the game has a lot going for it.

I think the lack of a save function was on purpose. it's like asking for a save function on a trumpet.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

The savepoint has been brought up on quite a few reviews. Its like a recording studio without the ability to record.

It's about making music and twiddling about rather than recording it. Again, a trumpet with a tape recorder selotaped to the end.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Why does Sonic the Hedgehog give you a score and a time bonus?

Creating that perfect piece and not being able to keep it makes the accomplishment feel empty.

I obviously agree with Evans here. It's a major issue.

The recording studio is a much better analogy then the trumpet.

Sure Segahund, it's about making music and twiddling about with neat music effects, but since it's such a versatile tool which allows for some pretty unique creations, it's a shame that they didn't include a save feature.

Actually, maybe the tool is so powerful that saving data would require a lot of space..

I mean, saving data in cubebase takes a lot of space. unless u record with a midi-keyboard, then it takes next to nothing in hardrive space, since midi is essentially just data.. sound data.

So if the effects in Eletroplankton are midi, then there really is no explanation as to why they (or he) didn't include a save feature.

But my guess is that it was a bit too advanced for the ds embedded midi software.

Only way i can see it appearing again is on the Wii as a VC download.

Why is the recording studio the better analogy?

Elektroplankton achieves what it's intended to, a recording studio that doesn't record isn't a recording studio.

So if the effects in Eletroplankton are midi, then there really is no explanation as to why they (or he) didn't include a save feature.

Becuase he didn't want to (probably didn't even cross his mind) becuase it is supposed to be a piece of interactive art, not a tool for making and recording music.

Why does Sonic the Hedgehog give you a score and a time bonus?

So that you can keep track of your score and improve on it. I didn't know you got a score in electroplankton....

That would be so cool, replacing the stylus with the wiimote. A stylus is technical, a conducting baton is more immersive.

Yeah, it definitely would be an even more versatile tool if made for wii wc.. sorry vc.
But there's an advantage in ds as well: easy to pick up and compose. compose on the fly. that feeling u can't get on the wii.

I think that would suit the VC system perfectly. Perhaps a little showcase for what the Wii can do, and also as a fun, gimmicky little game. Nintendo would probably make a fair amount more having it on VC than as a fully fledged game.

Actually, Now I'm thinking how great the Wiimote would have worked with Windwaker as the baton.

Most Nintendo CUBE sold brilliantly(ex. Odama) but Nintendo are the company to want to tap into the niche market and SEGA der hund is right it sold shocklingly in Japan bad hear and decent in America but indeed it was created by one guy in a short space of time now this time Nintendo budget it

Weird just found this. It's what the guy behind electroplankton has been working on and it does sound very electroplankton.

But you can refine it. Improving on something you've created is just as much fun as creating something new.

I'm with Grumbler on this one. It's an instrument and experimental thing, not a music maker, and this is how it was intended, with Iwai being a digital artist. Electroplankton is fine how it is, it's just not for everybody.

We won't see a sequel to it. Not because of poor sales, but because of Toshio Iwai. Why force himself to create a new title to improve on the old only? He's an artist, he should be moving on to new projects, and he has - hopefully one such project will end up on Wii, or there'll be another project on DS, but there will be no direct sequel to Electroplankton. As far as he's concerned, he's done all he can with it, or all that he wanted; it's done.
