*edit* Sorry to be a dick, but...
If you're having problems with your USB dongle and the guides don't help, then go talk to the official Nintendo Tech Support, they'll help me a lot better than me. Seeingas these guides are beating out Nintendo's own support website in Google, I'm slightly annoyed that I'm getting contacted by as many as 3 people a day about this, either through PMs, emails, or MSN... I'm just sick of it. Sorry.
Firewalls can be a pain in the arse, so here's a quick list of things you need to do to get up and running without disabling your firewall every time you want to use WiFi.
First, do not use Zone Alarm! It's pretty much impossible to get it working with Nintendo's WiFi system, no matter how hard you try with custom rules and such. I recommend Sygate Personal Firewall. It's no longer made because it was sold to Symantec, but you should be able to get it somewhere... *cough*
Okay, second, if you're using a Nintendo USB WiFi dongle, set it to have full access on all ports and protocols. That'll get rid of most of the problems, apart from the specific IP ranges that Nintendo uses for their services.
Then, load up your firewally's config utility, and make some custom rules (these are from the official Nintendo WiFi site)...
~ Allow all UDP traffic, incoming and outgoing, on all ports.
~ Allow all TCP traffic, on the following remote ports:
28910, 29900, 29901, 29920, 80 and 443
~ Allow these IP addresses:
192.168.1.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
172.16.1.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
0.0.0.0 subnet mask 255.255.255.255
Finally, here's some custom rules that I made up. It should unblock all the services and IP ranges that Nintendo uses for all their online stuff:
~ Set the following IP ranges to be permanently allowed:
Connection Tests A - 83.36.93.1 to 83.36.93.255
Connection Tests B - 61.54.24.1 to 61.54.24.255
nas.nintendowifi.net - 192.195.204.1 to 192.195.204.255
gs.nintendowifi.net - 207.38.11.1 to 207.38.11.255
nus.shop.wii.com - 209.67.106.1 to 209.67.106.255
rcw.wc24.wii.com - 125.199.254.1 to 125.199.254.255
cfh.wapp.wii.com - 84.53.134.1 to 84.53.134.255
weather.wapp.wii.com A - 84.53.136.1 to 84.53.136.255
weather.wapp.wii.com B - 213.155.151.1 to 213.155.151.255
NEW RULE! opera.com - 213.236.208.1 to 213.236.208.255
NEW RULE! american-sk8land.com - 70.86.183.1 to 70.86.183.255
Finished. All these settings work for both my Wii and my DS Lite, using a Nintendo USB dongle and Sygate Personal Firewall. Hopefully they should work for you too

Wait, can you use the USB Wi-Fi dongle with the Wii, without having wireless Internet or connecting it to the PC at all?

You mean
[[PC]]=[Dongle] - - - - - -[ Wii ]
That's my setup. Gotta have the PC on if I want to use WC24, though.

That's a real useful bit of information there. =) Thankfully I am using a router so it's much easier than that, phew! I know that at least one of my friends'll want help though so I can just direct them to your post instead. =D Hmm...I really must get more posts...this is worth a star but I have none...and by tomorrow I may well have forgotten. =/
EDIT: It appears I've qualified for another star sometime between my last star give and now...so you get a star now. =D

(the link is about halfway down the page)
See how effective your setup is.

Great tutorial Phil. Star'd.
I used the dongle for a while, but I have Zone, so had to switch of the fire wall, even with endless port opening and tinkering.
In the end my dad just turned our network back to accepting 11b so I only use the dongle on vacation.

I know this is a big bump but will you please tell me how you figured out what the ip's for sk8land were? Because I got everything to work fine thanks to you but now I have super smash bros. brawl and I need to know which ip's to allow for its online play. I have to take down my firewall to do it now.
