I don\'t know if we have had one of these, but even if we have had one in the past, I figure we need a shiny new one to discuss the future with. Besides, people who like this series are too cool to be without a place to discuss it. So basically this is the \"official\" topic to discuss anything Ace Attorney wise. Whether discussion is from the first through the recently announced 5th, talk away!

This topic assumes that you have at least played the first game, so beware of spoilers for that one, however discussion of plot details beyond said game must be properly marked.

So I have recently bought the second game, and am halfway through the second-case I believe. I\'m really liking it thus far. The very first case of the game was surprisingly fuller than the case for the first game, which pleased me. I am also really liking the psyche-lock, I just hope it does not get overused throughout the rest of the game, lest it get stale.

The second case so far has been very good as well. If there is one gripe I have with the game is that it is mixing even more of the silly spirit channeling in, which I find ridiculous. I\'m here for the court room sessions, not to learn about spirit channeling. Never-the-less so far I am liking the mystery of the second case, even if it heavily involves all the spirit channeling mumbo-jumbo. I have an idea who the murderer is, and her reasons, but could be wrong.

And lastly, I am liking the new characters and am happy to see some returning old ones, including the classic music that plays when *minor spoiler* Lotta Hart *minor spoiler* shows up. Of course the Von Karma girl rocks as well. The whip makes her so sinister. *shivers* And Pearl is a nice addition too.

OMG. I LOVE PHOENIX WRIGHT. I've been wanting to talk/rant/shout/object about it for so long... as in 2 weeks. Because that's how much I've loved it for.

About 2 weeks ago, I got the first game because my interest in it increased greatly since it was first released for DS, I was growing incredibly intruiged. So when I went out to buy Pok

I am psyched for the third game as well, cannot wait for it to come out this September. It's like a TV series really, you can't wait for another season of episodes! Smilie

But yes, I too like you missed out on buying the game as soon as it came out, but last December I asked for it as a Christmas gift and I loved it. Then a week or two ago I ordered the second off of eBay. The love continues.

For the fourth game, I have not heard much about it, except that Phoenix won't be the main character, which actually disappoints me quite a bit. Still though, the thought of 4-5 new episodes designed from the ground up for the DS like the incredible case 5 of the first Phoenix Wright excites me to no end.

Has anyone here imported Trials and Tribulations? *looks at Mason* Smilie

edit: to anyone who claims to dislike the Series: OBJECTION!

I can see that neat "objection creator" being used a lot in the future of this thread. Smilie

I love it also for it's mad scenarios but I have only the first game. I have not played the second, which one is supposedly the best so far?. I was going to get the second but was thinking that a Wii version would follow soon enough, but maybe that wont happen, maybe PW is better done on the DS?.

Imagine new cases that could be downloaded to your Wii. As much as I like the game the problem for me is the lack of replayability in these games, while they may well be fun, does that fun last?, I completed the first one easily enough. [LS]

( Edited on 24.06.2007 21:40 by Linkyshinks )

For me there is little replay value in the series, which is why I got the second one off eBay. However, I will be going back to the first sometime this year I imagine.

As for which is best, I'd say the world is divided in half. Mason swears by the second though, but I have not come close to finishing the second. I think it is safe to say though that if you liked the first, you'll like the second.

As for a console version - I don't know. It would work okay I imagine, but I would rather it stay on the DS. The dual screen setup works surprisingly well.

I actually really want Capcom to make an anime based on Phoenix Wright. I think it'd be awesome.

Yeah, I don't really like that either, at least he's still in it though, & Ema has quite a big role in it too. I'm wondering if Phoenix will make a comeback in the fifth game? Who knows.

I always thought a Wii version could work really well too, maybe Capcom are waiting for voice recognition to be confirmed?

I know what you mean, though once you've played it through, the text will be able to be sped up all the time, so you'll be able to skip bits you know. Still, it doesn't seem like it'll have much replay value. I'd probably do it sometime to see if I missed anything, or if I felt like playing all of them in a row.

I'm not sure. I'm on the 3rd story on the 2nd game now, & I think I prefer the original. Probably because the first DS game had the bonus chapter, while the 2nd only has the 4 original chapters from the GBA version. I would like to know how many chapters the 3rd game has... I thought it might have been 5, but I might be mistaken... 4 just seems too short... & 5 seems just right IMO.

I'm looking forward to finding out about Phoenix' & Mia's past in Trials & Tribulations though. That'll be cool methinks. Also, the music from the 2nd isn't as good as the music from the first.

Actually, that's another reason I'm looking forward to the 4th game, I really like the music from this series, & I just know the 4th game, beung built on DS from ground up will have much better music quality than the GBA music from the original trilogy, so I'm looking forward to hearing some.

I could be wrong, but I think there is. Give wikipedia a check. Even if there is though you can bet its Japanese only.

Well, considering Trials & Tribulations isn't out on DS yet, I assume you mean the GBA version? I think he has...

I thought it came out in Japan already, and seeing as it includes an English Language option, it would not surprise me if Mason hasn't played through it three times already. Smilie

Also, the music from the 2nd isn't as good as the music from the first.

Agreed. I like the music from the second, but it always excites me when I hear snippets from the first game. I prefer the music from then. The cross-examination music also is not half as good as the first one's.

But yeah, seeing the past when Mia was still alive in the third is going to be cool. I was soo disappointed when they killed off Mia right away in the first one.

Well, the Japanese version of the DS game isn't out yet, I don't think, it's out a month before the US release methinks. But yeah, I think the Japanese GBA game came with a translation anyway.

It's nice to see her pop up through Maya or Pearl every now & then though, & I guess it adds more depth to the story.

I'll check for the anime... but I don't think there is one. There is a manga though.

Hooray! As you may have been able to tell by my signature by now, the Ace Attorney series is one of my favourite. The first one whipped me up after I won a Japanese copy in a competition and I've never looked back. Superb story-telling and hilarious - alright, so it isn't one of the most 'gameplay heavy' experiences in that a lot of the time you're just clicking through text, but I find them sublime.

The second game, as Jacob mentions, is definitely my favourite of the two Ace Attorney games that have been westernised thus far - case 4 in Justice For All is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen unfold in gaming if I'm recalling it properly. However, I'm really looking forward to Trials and Tribulations as it's supposed to be the best of the series (not imported it - out in Japan in August, and I'm trying to resist to support it in the west, but I'm probably going to give in and end up buying the English version for somebody else to give it some support. Or I might wait the few extra weeks, who knows...).

For the fourth game, I have not heard much about it, except that Phoenix won't be the main character, which actually disappoints me quite a bit. Still though, the thought of 4-5 new episodes designed from the ground up for the DS like the incredible case 5 of the first Phoenix Wright excites me to no end.

I wouldn't worry about Phoenix not being the main character. Apparently his story is well and truly wrapped up in Trials and Tribulations (though the second game wrapped him up pretty well I thought). Also (do not click if you don't want any of the fourth game spoiling):

On the subject of a console version, I'd happily accept the games on Wii, but I think it's one of those things that works better with a touch screen. The idea of downloadable content is excellent though, and we broached the subject of a Wii version in an interview we had with one of the developers' of the series on Cubed3. They had no plans for one at the time, but things change, of course. I think it's more likely it'll stick on DS now with the huge popularity of the system and the fifth game already being confirmed for it.

It's like a TV series really, you can't wait for another season of episodes!

They really need to make an anime of it. For now, there's a manga. I've not read it myself yet, but here are some fan translations of the first couple of parts here. Brilliant fan page for the series, that, by the way, with lots of gifs and things.

Smilie

EDIT: I prefer the music in the first too, but it still has its charms.

I'm on the 3rd story on the 2nd game now, & I think I prefer the original.

Hold your tongue 'til case 4, that might change your mind.

And I think Trials and Tribulations has 4 cases, no extras over the GBA games. I think the fourth has 5, though.

Manga = Comic
Anime = Cartoon

*reads Mason's post*

EDIT: So you never got the GBA version of Trials & Tribulations Mason?

& about the 4th game:

Is the manga any good? I might give it a read. It is all finished now or is it still being made?

In any case, I'm pretty excite for the 4th case on Justice for All now, I loved the 4th case on the first game, & the 5th case seemed a little boring at first, but the new characters grew on me & I ended up really enjoying it.

Superb story-telling and hilarious - alright, so it isn't one of the most 'gameplay heavy' experiences in that a lot of the time you're just clicking through text, but I find them sublime.

I actually really like the gameplay. It is a nice diversion from full-on action games, and the stories make up for any short-comings in my opinion. Smilie

case 4 in Justice For All is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen unfold in gaming if I'm recalling it properly

Good! I have been hearing about how awesome (and long) case 4 is. I am having a big road trip (driving from Georgia to Canada) soon so hopefully it will last me the duration.

I wouldn't worry about Phoenix not being the main character. Apparently his story is well and truly wrapped up in Trials and Tribulations (though the second game wrapped him up pretty well I thought). Also (do not click if you don't want any of the fourth game spoiling):

I have picked up every available scrap of information for the 4th game, so I wasn't spoiled. Smilie

But really that's why I am slightly disappointed. I don't want Phoenix to be wrapped up. I just like his character. A good down to earth guy who is pretty smart. Still though, I might like this new guy. I will wait until I play it before mourning over Phoenix too long. Besides, we still have another game with him in it coming.

So, which case is you all's favorite? Mine so far is case 5 of the first game, with case 2 of said game coming in second. As I said though, I have not gotten to the allegedly incredible 4th case of game 2 though.

EDIT:

I loved the 4th case on the first game

I really enjoyed the fourth case as well, but all the investigation, which in my mind is the weakest point of the first game, was more tedious in that case than any other. It had the best court scenes and flash backs without a doubt though. I really love the character of Edgeworth, I can't wait to learn more about him as the Second game progresses.

Avoid Games Like the Plague, productivity++

I know what you are talking about, but cannot pin-point exactly where you are. IGN has some great fan made walkthroughs though for those points where you are about to bang your head against a wall Von Karma style. Smilie

Here's a link:Walkthrough

Oh, there are so many places to get stuck in case 5... >.<

I havn't played that case in a while, but GameFAQs should help.

I'm not sure about my favourite case... I really liked case 2 & 4 of the first game, & liked case 2 of the 2nd game. Seems to be a trend eh?

But really that's why I am slightly disappointed. I don't want Phoenix to be wrapped up. I just like his character. A good down to earth guy who is pretty smart. Still though, I might like this new guy. I will wait until I play it before mourning over Phoenix too long. Besides, we still have another game with him in it coming.
To be honest I couldn't agree more, exaclty my thoughts, Phoenix is such an awesome character, & I really like all the characters from his generation. I'll miss them all, & I won't be happy unless I see them all with some sort of cameo in the 4th/5th games... also this new guy seems weird. I mean Phoenix's hair was spikey... but... Smilie

EDIT: Also, I love Phoenix Wrong, I've probably seen every decent parody on the interwebs. "A field trip... a field trip... a field.- trip..." Smilie

You would get it if you've seen it! :3

But the spiky hair was part of his charm. I can see that they are trying to give this new guy some slightly weird hair too, but it does not seem the same. Smilie

As you said, we better get a bunch of cameos from the characters. I especially like Lotta and Gumshoe. Pal. Smilie

Oh, there are so many places to get stuck in case 5... >.<

Yes! The most difficult without a doubt. But it was very rewarding when you finally got it right, IMO.

Yeah, seeing Lotta in Justice for all made me feel all bubbly inside :3

& I get bubbly inside every time Mia pops up to save my ass.

& Gumshow just plain rules.... To me, this new gen of characters don't seem to do it... But maybe that's just 'cos I don't know them yet. I'll be getting it without question anyway if it is localised to the west.

Twitter | C3 Writer/Moderator | Backloggery

Yeah, we'll just have to wait and see, but as of now I am a bit skeptical about these new characters.

But anyway, surely me, Superlink, Mason, and Simon aren't the only people who love the series! Where are Hazuki and Beam? We choose you. Smilie

So who is you alls three's favorite side character? I got a big kick out of April May winning the judges affection, through somewhat...unethical means. (Smilie) But I think Lotta is my favorite. I especially get a kick out of her considering I understand almost all of what she says without any difficulty. Since I live in the South, you will come across a lot of people who talk very similar to her. Smilie

( Edited on 24.06.2007 23:13 by Jacob4000 )

Hmm... that's gonna be a hard one... so we're talking characters that only appear in 1 or 2 chapters? Well Larry is cool... & so is Meekins. Meekins is hilarious Smilie

& I think Lotta is alright, to be honest though, there isn't anyone in particular that I like a lot as those kinds of characters. I think all the episode 5 characters turned out to be pretty cool in the end though.

Lotta's probably my favourite side character too, though I also like Wendy Oldbag. Her obsession with Edgeworth...Smilie In terms of the main characters, Gumshoe is the man and it is he who I think will be the biggest loss for the fourth game.

Yeah, I know what you mean. But there's no point pushing the character if they couldn't take him any further in a main role, I respect the developers for doing it - it takes balls to completely remove all the characters in central roles from an established series. The characters showed progression throughout the first two games, so I'm glad that they appear to progress to the point where Phoenix ends up what he's doing in the fourth. Who knows, maybe he'll be back...

So, which case is you all's favorite? Mine so far is case 5 of the first game, with case 2 of said game coming in second. As I said though, I have not gotten to the allegedly incredible 4th case of game 2 though.

Case 4, Justice For All. It has everything in it, is long and has plenty of twists (I REALLY need to play it again to remember it fully, though). Cases 4 and 5 of the first one were great too.

( Edited on 24.06.2007 23:50 by Mason )

Well, I've done a little research into the 2nd & 3rd games past the bits I've played, & I havn't seen any spoilers in particular, but it seems some of the characters may switch roles in some way or another, I'm not sure, but who knows, I'd be happy to see Phoenix back as a lawyer maybe as a cameo in the fifth game, or maybe even as the main character again! Certainly would be a surprise, It could be 10 years later after the 3rd/4th game & they could reintroduce all the old characters we know & love. Maybe an anniversary edition of the game in a while? Smilie Well it'll have to grow into a very established series for that to happen... but in the west I feel like it's popularity is only just begginning.

Twitter | C3 Writer/Moderator | Backloggery

I also like Wendy Oldbag. Her obsession with Edgeworth...Smilie

Yeah, Oldbag was pretty awesome. I LOVE how the developers named the characters. Smilie

In terms of the main characters, Gumshoe is the man and it is he who I think will be the biggest loss for the fourth game.

Yes, I'd go so far as to say Gumshoe is a very big main character, not a minor one. He is so integral to the cast. He's involved with nearly every case I believe.

Yeah, I know what you mean. But there's no point pushing the character if they couldn't take him any further in a main role, I respect the developers for doing it - it takes balls to completely remove all the characters in central roles from an established series. You are right - I have nothing but respect for the developers for having the guts to say they could not take Phoenix any further and therefore bring in a new slew of guys. It is likely better that they are heading in a new direction instead of milking Phoenix to death when they have nothing more for him. Still doesn't take the edge of my disappointment though...Maya, and Mia and all the rest will be gone. Smilie

You know what I would really like though? If Phoenix became the veteran attorney that this new guy would go to for advice, or something. Would at least involve him a little more, and not get rid of his role entirely.

It would not surprise me to see the Series grow in popularity by leaps and bounds with every iteration. Apparently the first was such a sleeper hit that Capcom had to order more copies two or three times. I'm not sure how the second one has sold though.
