GC '07: Crysis Updated Hands-On - It's Almost Done
We check out the DirectX 9 version of the game as this anticipated shooter nears completion.
Posted Aug 22, 2007 6:50 pm GMT
LEIPZIG, Germany--Crysis dazzled us with its jaw-dropping graphics at E3, but the theme for Crysis at the Games Convention is that this highly-anticipated shooter also looks great on older hardware. To that extent, all the kiosks of Crysis here are running the DirectX 9 version of the game. And while the DX9 game doesn't look as good as the sumptuous DX10 version that we played at E3, it still looks really good.
The demo on display is the opening level of the game, the same as the E3 demo. You begin as a US Special Forces commando, clad in a high-tech "nano suit," and you must infiltrate a Pacific Island that's held by the North Korean military. At your disposal is your rifle, which can be customized with various accouterments, such as a reflex scope, silencer, and laser sight. You also have your nano suit, which can temporarily cloak you, or boost your speed, strength, or damage resistance. Your mission in this level is to get across a bay that's crawling with North Korean patrols.
The most obvious difference that we saw between the two versions is that the DX9 lighting isn't as rich or atmospheric as in the DX10 game. When we played the E3 demo last month, we were struck by how realistic the lighting was in the level; the setting sun created an incredible sight. The DX9 lighting, on the other hand, looked similar to many other games, but the amount of detail in the game is still impressive. Individual leaves sway due to a soft breeze, and the texture work on everything is just amazing.
This is still a challenging game. Though you have a nano suit, you'll get killed quickly if you try to run-and-gun through the level. You have to move smartly, shooting from cover and not charging stupidly ahead. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways of approaching the level. You can try using the large amount of jungle to sneak around the North Koreans, or you can assault up the beach, or the road, or the mountain, or you can even try to swim around the defenses.
We had a lengthy discussion with Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli, and he told us that the game is just two or three days from having all its features finished. Don't get too excited, though, because what follows next will be six weeks of bug fixing and polishing. Still, getting all of the game's content finished will be an incredibly significant milestone, and the team is working nonstop to hit it. Once hit, almost all the difficult work will be over, and Crytek can look forward to wrapping up work on a game that began almost four years ago.
As to what's next, Yerli said that the team plans to rest, but there are ambitious plans ahead. The company has had a secret project in the works, and Crysis itself is designed as a trilogy, assuming it does well and the fans want it. But judging by what we've seen and played thus far, the odds of that not happening are very long indeed. Crysis will ship on November 16. ( Edited on 29.08.2007 09:20 by Linkyshinks

Any estimates on minimum and recommended requirements yet?

Nothing official as of yet but the demo due out at the end of September will be confirmation. Will post something when the official word hits. My advice to anyone is to adress their RAM <2 Gig> if they have a weak PC and make sure they have a late 7 series Ge Force at the very least.{LS]

Almost all the videos that have been released are of DX 9.0c using one 8800 GTX and a DualC. Wait on the official word and dont listen to any rumours, just upspec your PC the best you can.{LS]
New video that just appeared on GT, it's low quality but still worth a look, I also updated the first video in the thread to a HD version.

It seems Amazon.com are now listing a special edition for $10 more. This edition comes with 3 cds with extras you would expect and a model of a V -Tol- (awesome)- Carrier. This version has not been listed on the U.K variation just yet, but keep your eyes peeled.
Got my DeathAdder today, it's the finest mouse I have ever used no doubt, I highly reccomend it to you guys, check the ERS mousescore of 87! and Razerzone for details. Still waiting on my Razer Reclusa, it's bumer buttons are going to be sweet for Crysis. I will be so fucking happy come the 25th. I will play some Halo3 but this demo has my full attention ( Edited on 17.09.2007 15:08 by Linkyshinks
.

Yeah my computer will run it, but I don't know how fun it will be on a radeon x1600 XT, 1.5 ddr 2 ram and a P4 3.0 HT. Not well I guess.

Yeah I will probably get the demo from a DVD or something, worth a shot.

Just realised the 25th is a tuesday!, why the hell is Halo3 coming out on tuesday of all days, it's bizarre.
I reckon it will be a very big file to replicate the engine, make sure you have adequate space also Z. Z you also have the specs to run Medal of Honour Airbourne demo, I would giveit a go I highly reccomend it simply because it's really fun. The specs are above, you can get the file via Gamespot free.
MAJOR BLOWOUT!, July and August have been fantastic-

Crysis Beta- *bumped*
http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/crysis/beta/temp_closed.aspx
Gamespot have just released a new Hands On of the ice level demo-
September 25 is a big day for shooter fans. Not only will Halo 3 finally arrive for the Xbox 360, but PC fans can finally look forward to getting their hands on the demo for Crysis, the eagerly awaited first-person shooter about a tropical paradise, North Korean soldiers, and alien invaders. Crysis promises to raise the bar for graphics, of course, but developer Crytek also wants to prove that its 2004 hit Far Cry was no fluke. The demo will feature the first level of the game, Contact, but with the release of Crysis set for November 16, EA and Crytek gave us a glimpse at Ice, one of the later levels in the game where the aliens transform the environment.
First, we've got some interesting updates about the story, which has changed quite a bit from what we were originally told a year ago. Crysis was originally going to be the story of how a mysterious object crashes to Earth on a remote Pacific island. When the US and North Korean militaries investigate, aliens emerge out of the object, putting the fate of the world at stake. Well, the US and North Koreans are still in the game, but nothing's crashing to Earth, at least not in the time span of this game.
"We change the fiction more for the terms of the future extensibility, and I wanted to add a bit of primal evil and play with the haunting aspects of islands. And so we said the ship did crash in the first ice age and the mountains actually encapsulated the ship. We don't know how many are on the Earth" said Cevat Yerli, Crytek CEO and director of Crysis. This fits together with what Yerli told us last month when he said that the story is designed to be a trilogy of games. However, he was also very clear that you can expect an epic finale in Crysis.
Ice begins with a tantalizing glimpse of tropical sunlight. Without spoiling things too much, in the mission prior to Ice, you find yourself trapped deep underground. At the beginning of Ice, you've finally made your way back to the surface where you see blue sky and the emerald green of the jungle, but then everything changes. The aliens unleash their cold technology and flash freeze the island in seconds. So instead of finding yourself on the warm surface, you're suddenly stranded in a frozen paradise that's crawling with aliens.
There's a vertical nature to this level that's going to be a change of pace from the large landscapes that you'll explore early on in the game. That's because you find yourself near the top of a ridgeline and must work your way down the steep, rocky slope. Thankfully, you' won't have to worry about slipping on all the ice. However, you do have to worry about the troopers, which are alien vehicle units that hunt and collect survivors in the ice. These troopers are reminiscent of the machine sentinels seen in The Matrix, from the way they fly about to their metallic bodies, which have streaming tentacles. They're also pretty smart.
"The difference between trooper combat and human combat is that troopers are agile, fast,
How you get through this level is up to you, which is pretty much the motto of Crytek's design. You can be aggressive, using run-and-gun tactics to get past the aliens. You can also try to be sneaky, using your nanosuit's powers to cloak out of sight and run from cover to cover. Or you can employ a mix of both brazen action and stealth caution.
All this happens in a frozen environment that's as believable as any we've seen in a game. The sensation of cold is there and quite possibly the best we've ever seen. It's not just the frost-covered terrain, but it's the beautiful, softly falling particles drifting through the air. Even the light seems cold.
Ice is an example of Crytek showing things that we haven't seen before. The jungle environments of the early part of the game are nice but also familiar to those found in Far Cry. However, while many of us have seen and been in snowstorms, how many of us can say the same of being trapped in a tropical jungle that's frozen through? When you throw in what promises to be some of the toughest and most alien foes that you'll face in a first-person shooter, you can see why we're so eager to get our hands on Crysis. At this point, November can't come early enough.

Lolz, the NPC A.I is vicious! they don't fuck about!. If you they see you run into cover they shoot blind into bushes and they anticipate so you have to be creative, one option is engaging cloak and getting out and the switching to maximum speed and flanking them. You cannot try lame ass tactics against them they will set men up to limit your options, it's fucking frightening!. The game forces you to think fast and be clever like nothing I have ever experienced before.
