You nailed it with "it sells papers". That is all they care about. They know their readership and exploit that. If her last name was Hussein and her dad Mohammed, they spoke poor English, then that does not sell papers.
Your other on Portugese police is interesting as well. The media beat that up because it sells papers to say that our police - good, Portugese police - fools. It taps into nationalistic superiority (endemic to all countries, but specific in this case).
