I loved FF12 also. (still need to complete it though.) The character designs, setting, story, everything is amazing.
I don't mind FF13 being linear. I was disappointed with FFX at first when I found out about how linear it was, but thinking back to how much I enjoyed and still enjoy playing FFX, I no longer see it as a problem.
FF games have always been about the stories for me anyway despite how others view them. Even with the world maps in the classics, you were still driven on a linear path. Now it's just become more focused. It didn't hurt 10 and it shouldn't really hurt 13.
I've got FF12 and Oblivion for open world RPGness anyway.
The only thing I'd like Square to do now is get rid of Nomura. He's been given far too much control these days.
