Update on my PS3 situation. :/

Called Sony, who said they'd sort it with the place I bought the unit from (gamestation). They called me yesterday saying since it was secondhand I'd have to talk to GS myself. Did so, they offered a straight swap for another 60gb unit they had. Did so today, now have a newer unit that pretty much works perfectly, aside from the racket it makes (like an old 360 running discs *shudder*. I'm hoping I'll get used to it.)

Real Pain in the ass though. Still have my profile, friends list, trophies, etc, but my 50+ hour Persona 4 save file is gone, as is my newer P3 one (not really pining for that as much), plus my Uncharted stuff, MGS, FFXIII...bah. Plus, when the old unit went yellow on me, there was a disc in there, and because there's no safety release technique for a PS3 Phat, I've just had to rebuy Persona 3. Bollocks.

Not risking this again though, I've taken out an extended warranty for this unit and will get a portable harddrive to back up the data every weekend or so. If this one breaks again I'll use the warranty to put it towards a slim, PS2 ability or not. Smilie

It's not really worth it having one of those old 60GB PS3s. I know that they play PS2 games, but really that one upside doesn't discount the fact that if you get a 2006 PS3, you're kind of asking for a YLOD.

Uncharted 3....

Got a £25 PSN card for free, so treated myself to Resident Evil: Director's Cut (is on offer until tomorrow for £3.99!), and Resident Evil 4 HD. Been going on a Resident Evil binge since getting RE5: Gold Edition last week. Haven't played RE4 since the PS2 days (owned it on PS2 and GC), and I certainly haven't played the original in years and years.

I hope the voice acting is as awesome/more awesome than I remember. "No! Don't open that door!" and "Hope this is not Chris' blood." etc. I wonder what the differences are between the absolute original version and the Director's Cut? It's been so long I probably wouldn't notice differences anyway.

What a shit situation, Phoenix. Losing game data and having to rebuy a game is the pinnacle of taking the piss. Hope this one doesn't go on you, but if it does, PS2s are cheap enough to pick up along with a PS3 slim now.

Thankfully I still have my Sliver slim PS2 stowed away; the bc PS3 was for convenience mostly.

Anyways, spent some time with the new unit, and I'm taking it back tomorrow. The noise it makes is ridiculous; I've tried vacuuming it and propping it up to give it more ventilation but it just drowns out the TV. Martin's right, the older units arent worth the hassle; I'll use the warranty to get a new Slim tomorrow, and set my PS2 back up for the Persona games.

Good call, if you ask me. My slim is louder than it's ever been, but it's still nowhere near as loud as your average PS3 fatty. Still puts my 360 to shame. It's unfortunate that Sony can't offer full PS2 emulation, so that all units my have BC with the PS2.

Alternatively, they might consider once again offering PS3 (Slim!) consoles with all the requisite PS2 innards for backwards-compatibility, for a higher price than regular PS3s. Let's say a normal 320GB PS3 slim is £200. I'd pay £250 for the exact same console/HDD, but also with PS2 BC. Just a thought.

RE1: Director's Cut is pure cheese. It has aged terribly, and that's why I love it. RE4 is something of a disappointment, unfortunately. RE1: DC only cost me £4, so the fact that it's ridiculously shit doesn't bother me. It was very cheap.

RE4 on the other hand is being marketed as a "HD" product, with a price tag that puts it right up there with other better HDified old games. I know it's not a remake, but still the lack of effort on show from Capcom is telling. It's literally just the Wii game but in HD. All the textures and models are the same.

It basically just isn't worth the high price, especially when other HD port-ups in the same price-range generally display a higher degree of polish/extra attention. What you have here is just RE4 as you know it, but with more clarity. If it had cost half as much, it'd be OK. As it is.. they're just lucky that RE4 is such a great game and didn't particularly need anything doing to it.

With all these HD collections coming out the chances of Sony putting BC back in is slim (ha) at best. Only scenario I can see of it happening is if enough PS2s wear out with time and Sony get badgered about it, but unlikely.

Gotta admit though, they sure built those PS2 slims to last, hooked mine back up and it runs like a dream. Might need a new controller though. :/

I suppose you might have a point there, but then I'd much rather play PS3 native Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, RE4, etc, than play the PS2 originals. In fairness there's nothing wrong with most of them on PS2, but some HD port-ups (like SotC) literally put the original versions to shame. And with the others you still get nice things like 16:9 and HD, if nothing else.

Yup, mine still works very nicely. I have some pretty used up controllers as you say. I think one of them is still in decent order? Still, my PS2 got nothin' on my Saturn. Another console with just as many moving parts. Never gets hot, never gets loud, never gives me any shit, basically just never fails. You have to change the internal battery for game saves once every few years, that's it.

Shit load of interesting stuff on The Last of Us here.

Normally, this probably wouldn't appeal to me that much. But the fact it's the Uncharted team, knowing how damn well they can make games and have redefined them, and just reading some of the stuff they're saying, makes me seriously interested in this.

Take as long as you need, Naughty Dog.

Watched a few ps vita videos online yesterday, i'm quite impressed with it. Hope the console does well! The fact it's region free also is really cool.
