C3 Game of the Decade(TM)

Unimaginative, but there\'s not a man alive who doesn\'t enjoy working this shit out.

So, we\'re not far off the teens and I thought we could start compiling a C3 Game of the Decade shortlist. Gives us plenty of time to track down ones we missed so we can make an (relatively) informed vote. It might be nice to commit to trying something that\'s outside our usual comfort zone - maybe we could each pick the very best example of a genre we hate and give it a go? Regardless, it\'ll jolt our collective memories when we see something we really should have played and perhaps we\'ll pick it up next time we see it for a fiver in CEX. I was out the other day looking for some GC games, and it\'s getting to the point where ebay is the only place to go for older games, which makes me sad. Let\'s make the best of the shops while we still can.

This is how I propose we do it -
Everyone posts suggestions which will be collated into an uberlist. We\'ll then discuss and whittle out the average stuff (which I\'m certain will creep in). Our final nomination list will be decided by periodic polls, and will have one game from every year - just one. If there are certain years that were quiet we can discuss having two games from another year (\'07 and \'08 alone have a decade\'s worth between them!) But there will only be 10 games in the final list.

This is multiformat. Any game on any format is eligible as long as it\'s very very very good.

Using Wiki, Metacritic and memory I\'ve drawn up a small list to start us off:

Obviously there\'re massive gaps. Some genres are horribly underrepresented, some consoles too. There\'s not much Wii or DS, for example, but I can\'t think of anything vital I\'ve missed from either console. Nothing that\'s game of the decade material. \'Really good\' doesn\'t cut it and I\'m not going to list token games just to namecheck console X.

There will be personal favourites that won\'t get in. Anything is fair game if you argue well enough though, so think before you post. But remember, we\'re only going to have ONE game from every year. Also, re-released older games don\'t count, however remade or rez-ed up they may be. Otherwise Banjo XBLA would clean-up

I think it\'ll be fun. We\'re spanning three generations(!); the twilight greats of the N64 through to the slow-burning PS3 starting to produce some decent titles. There\'s a shitload that happened in-between And who-knows what\'s still to come? Maybe we\'ll even see the Duke again before the decade\'s out!

If Phantom Hourglass made it onto the list, I demand Sonic Rush and/or Sonic Advance be on there! So I can at least try and argue for them y\'know?

At this stage anyone can suggest any number of games, any year (2000-2009). The list above represents a few potentials.

And you can propose as many Sonic games as you like SL. But let's face facts - the prognosis ain't peachy.

Please change Final Fantasy XII to Final Fantasy X, although XII was more critically acclaimed X was by far the better game.

Disagree on FFXII... Well I admit I havn't played much of X, but I honestly thought/think that FFXII is amazing.

Don't worry Mr Monkey, I'll only propose the Sonic games that are generally agreeable I doubt I'll be able to make a good argument with anything other than Advance 1, 2 and Rush.

Hm...Majora's Mask, Pokemon GSC and Phoenix Wright all stand out for me...

I'm gonna go for Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. Only game I've racked up over 700 hours on.

Super Smash Bros. Melee, for somewhat feeling better to play than Brawl.

Mario Kart DS. Best Mario Kart that i've played.

Perfect Dark.

Roller Coaster Tycoon 3??? Not everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoy it........

Ooh, Banjo-Tooie was published in 2000...that just makes it a serious candidate...damn...I'm not sure now. Pokemon R/S or Banjo-Tooie...

Well it's quite clearly Ocarina of Ti...oh wait.

I'll give a bit thumbs up to pokemon gold/silver and Resi 4.

As for other games, Smash Bros. Melee should be in there (lots to do, lots of characters, great multiplayer, simple to play, relatively hard to master).

Super Monkey Ball! Insanely addictive, frustrating, and just generally amazing. It's also an incredibly simple concept that just works- it's almost tetris like in that respect.

Finally, the original Advance Wars. Again it's an addictive game with loads to do, and a great multiplayer. Simple on the surface but carries depth as well. I can't sell it better then that.

For example, there\'s just no way that games like Spider-Man 2, Mirror\'s Edge, Timesplitters or the Sonics are going to win \'best game\' of their respective years, let alone the decade. Likewise with Tooie As much as we might like them, they\'re all undeniably flawed in some way (with the possible exception of Sonic Advance - I\'ve heard good things). Of course, you could always present a well-honed argument for them and I could be persuaded, but I think that\'s reasonable, no?

I\'ve listed them all roughly chronologically. Multiple years denote release dates in different territories - gives us a bit of leeway, although I think anything with a \'99 in it should be struck off

Edit. Talking of Jet Set Radio, has anyone played Jet Set Future? How does it compare?

And why Tooie? Better than Kazooie IMO.
