Me and my friends were having an argument over covers.
Personally, I don't really mind Taylor Swift, but I thought that her cover of Eminem's Lose Yourself was decent. It didn't sound too country or girly and she made it her own thing. Now a couple friends said that she ruined it, and that in their minds, Lose Yourself is one of the greatest songs of all time and shouldn't be touched (it is a great song, but of all time? no way).
I then said, with that mindset, orchestras shouldn't play Beethoven or Mozart songs. One friend said that it's fine if it's done hundreds of years later, not if it is in the same generation. I said this argument is invalid also.
Jimi Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower is widely considered one of the greatest songs of all time. It was released 6 months after Bob Dylan made it. Yet, in this case, the song is remembered for Hendrix, not Dylan, because it turned out to be better.
