Miyamoto texted me to say that Smash Bros has been cancelled Smilie

He said they'll be making Mii Battle Universe instead. It will have no items and just a punch button (tap A). Jumping will be shaking the Wii Remote.

If you push someone off the edge you get penalised.

I cannot believe this! Smilie

I posted this on a facebook page, but this is where I currently stand with the '8 Gen War'

If you look at the range of first party exclusive AAA games this gen between the two companies then Sony has wiped the floor overall - there comes a point where I really don't want another Halo, Fable, Crackdown, Forza, Gears etc, their offerings are pretty slim on that front. Sony have had infamous, Uncharted, Heavy Rain, Ratchett, Jak, Last of Us, God of War, Journey, Killzone, resistance, Metal Gear, P4 Arena, 3D dot game, Yakuza, valkaria to name a few. Don't even get me started on Nintendo Exclusives. I'm hoping that the trend will continue this gen. As primarily a PC gamer I not look at the amount of exclusives, but the breadth of genres they cover. I had a 360 this generation and was pretty disapointed and I'm currently still on the fence about picking up a PS3 cheap to catch up on missed titles. The Wii was fine but fizzled out towards the end.

Time will tell of course, but if they keep pumping out fantastic new IP's like they have been doing, then it should go to Sony.

Based purely on the conference, then Sony also - but I can't help but feel that they gave us exactly what they wanted us to hear. But of course, there's obviously nothing wrong with that, and if they continue to listen to the community, it should be a good gen.

ATTENTION HYPE TRAIN PASSENGERS, WE WILL BE STOPPING AT OUR FINAL DESTINATION IN UNDER HALF AN HOUR. BE EXCITED, BE VERY EXCITED. PLEASE ENJOY YOUR LAST BIT OF TIME ON THE HYPE TRAIN, AND HAVE A NICE DAY. Smilie

Well that was underwhelming, to say the least.

3rd party support wasn't very good and no major surprises but what was shown was very good, specially smash bros Smilie

Yep.

Mario and Smash look great, but other than that there was nothing new or surprising.

Really wanted:

  • Release date for Phoenix vs Layton
  • Retro to be working on new IP
  • Games for 2013...not 2014
  • Some 3rd party 3DS stuff
Not a horrible conference in that what was shown looked okay. Mario 3D Land will be good. Mario Kart looks nice, even though it'll probably just end up more of the same. Good to see progress on Smash Bros, but I'll be surprised if Nintendo can pull off a simultaneous release of both games in 2014.

The stuff that looked solid is mostly coming in 2014 so there's still nothing to get me excited for this year, which is really what E3 should be about. As it is, a lot of that stuff may end up being shown again at next year's E3. I do like the promise of another openworld game from Monolith though. Those guys have earned some respect after Xenoblade.

Really gutted that Retro's new game is just another Donkey Kong. That's fine, really, but why did they let the hype blow up around them? Should have told us it was Donkey Kong a long time ago. No reason to lead us on like that - could only end in disappointment. "Surprise, we're doing the same thing again."

edit: Ultimately, it feels like a real missed opportunity that Nintendo couldn't feed off of the negative PR MS is experiencing and hit one out of the park. Even now, half a year later, the Wii U feels half-baked. And I didn't see anything today to change that impression.

...I shouldn't have watched the Super Mario 3D World trailer again. Now the damn main theme is stuck in my head, it's Super Mario 3D Land all over again!! Argh..

Best version of Link yet. Looks of Twilight Princess but with more colour like Skyward Sword. Perfect.

Yeah I'm loving the new art style for new smash!

I like the art style for the 3DS version, which has bold outlines on the character models. Makes it look kinda comic-y. Pretty awesome. Can't wait to see more of both versions, but I really did like the trailer they showed today. Yay for Mega Man and AC Villager. Smilie

They've got a site for smash bros as well now http://smashbros.com
Hope it's like what they did with brawl with the dojo and update it quite frequently but we'll see!

Just noticed a pacman reference at 1:04 in the Wonderful 101 trailer. Still one of the most interesting games to me, aside from the Nintendo stuff of course...

Conference was good.

Mario Kart TV announced!

Loving the Okami reference at 1:26. Smilie Game looks sweet and crazy as hell.

Retro wasn't mentioned at all. If all they've been doing is another Donkey Kong game then that is VERY disappointing. Seems strange they didn't even have their name attached to it. Fingers crossed that's just a side project and not their main focus. Smilie

Ouch. Low blow by Mario. I expect better of him in a fight.

I thought the presentation started out VERY strong with Super Mario 3D World and MK8. Mario looked like so much fun. I'm glad they found a balance between M64's open world and Galaxy's linear levels. I rather liked Super Mario 3D Land.
4 Player 3D Mario will be awesome.

Then Mario Kart 8. The last MK I bought was DD on GC. I skipped the last 3... but this one I might get. It looks like a lot of fun. And good online support.

Monolithsoft's X looked amazing. Robots and dinosaurs in a huge and gorgeous world? Sounds like my kind of game.

I was surprised there were so many games for 2014 shown... but probably more surprised about some release dates that come earlier than I expected. TWWHD in October? Mario in December? MK8 in spring 2014? That's not bad at all.

Yeah, the 3rd party reel and the eShop reel were pretty bad. Not a single unannounced game, and most were multiplatform.

I was so sure we were going to see several unannounced games. Miyamoto's new game. Wii Sports U. F-Zero or Star Fox. But NOTHING. That was pretty disappointing.

It makes you wonder what the heck Nintendo is doing with all their manpower. It feels like they produced way more games in the GC era. And that was long before the Wii made them like 3x as rich and big.

All in all, I'm happy.
