Not sure if anyone's seen this yet, but lik-sang has done a preliminary review of some PSP features...
Pay special attention to what they say about load times for different games.
apparently, they suck out loud.

but no mention of battery life.

That sucks.. but ah well I know i will be getting one still and the MP4 playback sounds interesting..

Cubed3 Member

Yet another kick up the ass for the PSP.

I would consider picking up one of these were it not for the battery life and loading times. If Sony released an improve version further down the line I would deffiently pick it up.

Now lets load the game.

One...

Two...

Three...

Four... ... etc you get the picture.

That golf game takes almost a minute of loading. All the time the disc is spinning, draining the batteries - and when its loaded, the game will have power restrictions, meaning it can't load much during the game, meaning the game can't be as good as it should, in a desperate attempt to save the battery-life trying to make this poorly thought-out machene almost playable.

Leave it to the experts, sony. Smilie

I did a thread on this a few days ago!

Its so poor... shockingly so. As much as it is an awesomely powered unit, such a HUGE design flaw should in the balance of right and wrong make it fail... but it wont.

how big does the capacity of these memory sticks get? It sounds interesting to me- games might be able to be put on them as stated in the article, which would cut out battery life issues. And the multimedia capabilities of the PSP are pretty good. If not for the battery life issues i'd probably opt for it it over the DS.

Cubed3 Member

What, put games on "carts"?

Sony would never do that after they have been speeling on about the greatness of disks for 10 years! Smilie

Cubed3 Member

The only problem which immediately comes to mind is the fact that every time you touch that special material, you leave fingerprints on your system. For sure, the unit won't look that great after an hour or two, or worse after weeks of playtime, when showing them to your NDS friends and GBA SP buddies

hehehehehehe, that also makes me laugh Smilie

i think sony got this mixed up:

Large load times
small battery time

surely they shoulda been the other way round??? Smilie

another comment i loved from that article:

When waiting for the first video of Ridge Racer to load in the memory, I actually thought the machine went off, so long it was.

still funny Smilie Smilie Smilie Smilie

I used Froogle, and a 1GB Memory Stick Duo Made by Sony can be purchased for ~$200, 512MB ~$120, 256MB ~$80.

The respective generics are less.

Rather dissapointing for those who do want the PSP. Especially the fingerprint thing; I would be constantly pissed off seeing fingerprints on it. I'm a clean freak like that over my "gadgets"; they must always look pretty Smilie. I always seem to be cleaning my GBA SP of specs of dust that land on the screen. Smilie I hate that!

Thing is, you're never going to be able to play it for a quick few minutes, like at a bus stop or something, like you can with GBASP. I mean, theres never going to be any game like Wario Ware Inc, for instance, that you can just switch on and be playing almost straight away (Wario Ware, for instance, takes 15 seconds from power off to *actual gameplay*, so handy when you've got a spare few seconds to have a quick game). It dosn't know what it wants to be - handhelds should be pick-up-and-play - thats whats great about them - it seams the PSP isn't suited to long periods of gameplay or short periods either.

Now THAT is a smart comment! Smilie

Cubed3 Member

basically, it isn't suited to playing!!

When waiting for the first video of Ridge Racer to load in the memory, I actually thought the machine went off, so long it was

this happened to me while playing crash bandicoot on the PS2- even the loading screen stopped moving and I was crapping myself thinking I'd broken it! I told him and he said to wait a few minutes- then it suddenly started working again!! Few!

I just completed pokemon yellow! 151 pokemon seen and caught.
Surely that's worth a star?
Cubed3 Member

Only a fool would write of the PSP before it's been released. No one thought that Sony would overthrow Nintendo's console business, yet here we are, the PS2 outselling the GC 5:1 worldwide. The long loading times of the PS1 certainly didn't/hasn't affected sales. Over 100 million worldwide and still it sells. How many N64's have been sold with it's instant loading times? Smilie

My DS code for 42 classic games is 5026 2806 4140. Looking for people to play Rummy with. Feel free to PM your code. Also, anyone can add my Wii code if they like, PM me with yours too.
Cubed3 Member

True but i think Nintendo underestimated sony they were completly new to selling consoles. But now i think they know what to expect and thats y they have been so aggrasive with the DS

I think it could still be a mixed bag, I mean, what, 1 in 20 people who buy the PSP will know about this loading problem? And say 5 in 20 know about the battery life? Sony probably know this.

The actual PSP is so much more stylish and better looking than the DS in my opinion, and the graphics better. But DS has the loyalty, and the experience.

Who cares? I'll wait even 2 hours for loading time as long as they'll make great games like Ridge Racers and MGA.

It sucks, though...

but no mention of battery life.

I bet lik-sang knows what the battery life is--they just don't want to disclose it. Remember they are going to sell these things meaning if they said anything bad, it would probably hurt their sales. I'm suprised they mentioned the load times, but I guess the load times wouldn't be as bad as the poor battery life.

Who are we? We are the Knights who say..... "Wii"!

tbh I wouldn't stand up with a PsP or a DS, I would use it (in my particular day to day activity) on the bus... and... that's it. It takes me about 20/30 minutes on a bus to get to where I wanna go (usually). 35 seconds to get into a game is NOT going to worry me at all.

*ok, bring on the 'PsP wouldn't last 20/30 minutes' jokes*

The bottom half of your post is logical, the top isn't.

However "great" Ridge Racer or MGA will be, the battery life and loading times would get to you eventualy (I'd give it 30 seconds myself). And take away from your enjoyment.

Cubed3 Member

damn! lookie that! a memory stick slot, such great expancion abbilitys... *slaps self in face* i mean... the PSP sucks... and how the hell is that supposta be a analog stick??!!!
but really, look at it! i mean all the stuff it has is soooo cool, but the ds is cooler, right? i donno now...no.. i like the ds

Image for

honestly, you gotta admit, the PSP is very cool. look at it. the entire thing just screams "sofisticated".. but im gonna get a ds for sure

Cubed3 Member

Well... the psp is all about looks, umm that's about it. Oh yeah, more money to sony's huuge pocket. That's about it. The fact you have to use a memory stick duo only is a bit shitty.

Cubed3 Member

I dont think anyone disagrees that it looks cool (exept beam) . DOsn't scream sophisticated to me though.. more Playstation 2
